The problem is not that they fail to talk about the Operator, but that they don't discuss him at all.

The characters have no problem saying "What WAS that thing?" but they never actually elaborate or give any theories on what it actually is.

Seriously, they could throw in an entry where they discuss "Maybe its from outer-space," etc.

Well, like I said earlier: if they did that, it would kind of tarnish the mystery and the ominous feeling this series has created around him. When they avoid going into detail with the Operator, it makes him come off as a lot more weird and eerie - something they just do not want to talk about. Then that sort of transfers to the viewers and just overall makes for a better story/experience.

I believe Troy stated in the radio interview:

Quote:
We're not gonna have Jay say "OMG GAIZ DID U C DAT THING IN TEH BACKGROUND?!?!?!?" That's not how Jay's mind works.

Paraphrased obviously.

This is where MH differs from the other series. In TT at least, Noah had a moment of "holy shit there is a man following me".

I imagine Jay is the type to just let the footage speak for itself, which is why a lot of the time entries don't end with any kind of text reflection.

How the Hell DOES his mind work, then? I think Tim had a point.

More accurately, everything else differs from MH. I suspect some of the ones that followed it were intentionally trying to subvert it.

Yeah, it was at a GMX convention I think. He said he had to find middle ground between Jay being blatantly unobservant and OHMYGEE DID YOU SEE DAT CRAY SHEET?!?!?
They try to guide the viewer with major plot points but leaves a lot for the viewer to discover for themselves

I like Jay being quiet. It allows for more immersion and helps you get personal with TO instead of having to watch Jay freak out. You get to do it instead. Very Happy

I wouldn't be too surprised if much of the time they have trouble even bringing TO to mind. Their memories regularly get wiped. If they remember TO, it's mainly because of the tapes. It must have been a tape of an Oppy encounter of which he had no memory that led Alex to carry a camera with him at all times in the first place, and Jay had completely forgotten about everything, even the depth of his involvement in the innocuous MH project, until he viewed Alex's tapes.

No one is sure of what anyone else remembers -- or even of what they themselves remember. Not the easiest thing to talk about, or even be sure if you *should* talk about it.

Jay does directly talk to The Slender Man (still refuse to call him The Operator) in 52.

"WHAT DO YOU WANT?"

"LEAVE US ALONE!"

It's honestly one of my favorite moments in the whole series.

But it is kind of the Operator's show... You'd think they'd talk about the central "figure" more often.

This is what I like about MH the most: The Operator literally had less than a minute of screen time in Season 2.

He's like the meth in Breaking Bad at this point: half a focal point, and half only background for crazy people doing crazy things.

Spoilering for OOG, but it's pretty definitive.
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Here's the thing. "The Operator" (according to OOG clues given by the series's creators themselves) is the in-universe name for the being based on the Slender Man. However, none of the characters in the series know this, or have indicated that they know this. None of them have given him/it a direct name other than descriptive reference. The closest we got was TTA's vague references in the eponymous video.

That's not the only TTA video where "operator" was hinted at. There's "Indicator", and at least one more showing the telltale telephone button. (Edit: "Sidetone") And then there the "Brief Operative Progress Note" from 60.5 with the symbol showing...

Hey. It just hit me. The characters do know that it's called The Operator. Or, at least Jay does. Because Jay watched quite a few of the Totheark videos.

Don't Alex's drawings count for something? I'm pretty sure at least one of them had the word "OPERATOR" over the symbol. Jay might not get it, but otherwise there wouldn't be much reason for Alex to do that if he didn't in some state of mind know the thing's name.

All I know is, I'm glad they don't address him and talk about him that much in the series for the reasons I said before.

I also like how Jay barely ever speaks to the camera. It's just text, so it's a more isolated, lonely feeling given to the viewer. Plus how he sometimes doesn't have afterthoughts in an entry; the video just ends. Leaves the viewer to think on their own while giving them an alone feeling. I know some of you already know this stuff, but it's just GENIUS.

That's why Entry #60.5 gave off a sort of non-MH style to me. The entry was fine though, so it's not a big deal.

I actually JUST posted a Spec on this in the most recent entry.

[Spec]

It is because The Operator Doesn't want to be known, so everyone that remembers him he tries to wipe their memories (but since he is on a bunch of tapes, that is hard to do as they just RE-discover him). And every time they come in direct contact with him (blackout) he wipes their memories (notice he doesn't need to kill them) and they remember all of the events - slendy.
Then they watch the tapes and are like "Oh shit, How did I forget about Slendy!?"
As stated before:
jay (entry 42) - "i saw that thing in there" (Jay didn't blackout)
tim (entry 59) - "i'm this way because of alex and whatever that is that follows him around" (Tim just watched the MH Entries)
alex - (entry 42) - "that thing was in there?" (Alex is a super memory genius? IDK why TO let Alex get away the first time...)
amy (entry 26) - "oh my god! what is that!?" (well duh, he was right there)

So Jay's mind was wiped during Marble Hornets filming. (He was "gone") Then a few years later (now) Jay learns about TO from the tapes and gets too Deep and TO comes after him again.
But TO left him alone because Jay's mind was wiped.
