Requesting help.
Noob here.

I'm new to Marble Hornets, and the world of ARGs in general, and if anyone could give me a brief PM to catch me up to speed on the story, and any general strategies I could use to assist you guys, that would be great. Thanks in return.

Welcome!

I only found MH limea week ago, and like you I am new to ARGs. I would recommend just watching the MH videos, it really doesn't take very long as they are usually pretty short. There is also another channel linked to MH, which is 'ToTheArk'. I can't say how important they are to watch now, but I would so you know everything.

If you want more information, everything is here in the forum but it will probably take some time to find exactly what you want.

Good luck for now, and I hope you enjoy the series!

First welcome.

Second a warning. Some people get very upset with making new topics on the board. Doesn't matter to me but you might get complaints.

Now as far as answering your request.

As you watch read along with twitter going by the date. Try to avoid spoiling yourself by scrolling all the way down to the first tweet. This will take a little while and I suggest you just watch the scroll bar to avoid seeing any tweets.

The only other info I can give you is that the Slender Man in Marble Hornets is called the Operator. They never do a good job of establishing this. If you have any questions as you view post them here and I will answer them.

There's a Youtube playlist that has all the entries plus TTA videos in their proper places. I suggest either watching that. I just started watching Thursday night. I'd never heard of Marble Hornets until MangaMinx mentioned it the other day during her LP for "Slenderman"... and then I went to work Friday and told everyone about it.

But you definitely need to watch the whole thing first.

I'd also suggest that, even if you're REALLY tempted, don't say anything (read, but don't post) until you finish watching everything.

I made one of those but there's probably more than one. It was for personal use but I started watching with a friend and had to make it public so:

Here's something that I've been working on for a while that might help:

http://www.aidansean.com/marble_hornets/

It's a list of all the videos in order, so you can autoplay the whole series in one go. It has spoilers, but these are turned off by default so you won't ruin anything unless you choose to. For each video there's a link to the relevant thread on this forum, the wikidot page, and the youtube page. You can control the youtube player with the keyboard. (Instructions on the page. If you click on the player itself then you'll lose access to these controls and you'll need to click on something else to get them back.)

You can make your own playlist by choosing which accounts you want to include (MarbleHornets, totheark, or both) and you can even filter on the characters and whether or not the operator is present. Once you've watched the whole thing you can then watch them in "chronological" order (order taken from the wikidot, this is a controversial topic!)

There are also links to the Twitter feed and a Google map someone put together on there, as well as a load of parodies and fun things at the bottom that only make sense once you've seen all the videos.

It's not finished yet and I doubt I'll finish it any time soon. When it's finished it will save your settings in cookies and allow you create your own playlist by entering the videos in the url. It's updated whenever I can be bothered, which is usually within a few days of a new video. It's only been tested on firefox under mac/linux, so there are no guarantees if you're using something else.

Oh, and when posting on these boards most people are friendly, but some people can be hostile, even abusive- ignore them. If you can come up with an idea that's consistent with a reasonable interpretation of the videos/tweets then it's not wrong and ignore anyone who claims it is. My own thoughts are the more of these ideas we discuss the better, because they only way we can work out what is really going on is to encourage discussion of different ideas. If there's a problem with your theory someone will point it out.

Don't be surprised if this thread gets merged with another one, or moved about. There seems to be an ongoing feud about the boards being "cluttered" and people deciding that a topic is a waste of space before it's even discussed. I'm generally in favour of people being able to create threads that span multiple videos, because having one thread per video stifles debate and makes it too easy to lose track of theories/information. But I'm not a mod so it's not really up to me.

It's usually a good idea to ignore the 2-3 pages of any post for a given video because it's just people saying "New video!" and "Wow, did not expect that" etc. The really interesting stuff comes later once everyone has calmed down. A lot of the most interesting ideas come weeks, months or even years later when someone rewatches a video and notices something new.

And finally: welcome! Smile This series is a lot of fun and these boards are a great place to chat about it.

Welcome to the forums. I'm sort of new here, too, since although I've had an account for a while, I've not really been involved with the community until now.

At any rate, with Marble Hornets, your best bet is really to watch all of the videos in order rather than have someone explain the plot to you. MH is fairly simple as far as ARGs go, and you can catch up to it in a few days through the YouTube channel (it's easy enough to find a playlist with all of the videos in order, along with totheark responses). There is also a Twitter, with a handful of new tweets which are beginning to get...interesting (which might actually be a very good reason for you to watch the series before you view the Twitter).

There are sources where you can get a plot summary, but you know, why use the crib-notes when you can just view one of the better web series ever produced?

When I first started watching, I just watched the MH entries in order while reading wiki-analysis on entry's I found interesting. I watched all the TTA's afterward.

While I don't think reading the twitter is really necessary at all, I would read the wiki entry about the Tweepocalypse.

Disclaimer: I started watching at the beginning of S2, so I didn't have many TTA's to catch up on.. so it may be more beneficial to watch them chronologically with the MH entries.

Here's a comprehensive timeline (hence the name) that I used when getting a friend caught up with Marble Hornets.
You should be able to find threads on this forum for most of the entries. Those have some important speculation scattered throughout off-topic chat and bickering Very Happy

This is the most complete analysis of seasons 1 and 2. I'd recommend that you only read it after finishing the first two seasons (if you decide to read it at all). There are a ton of spoilers in that thread. Some things are also out-of-date according to current speculation.

These some useful acronyms and names (most major spoilers have been removed):
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
  • MH = Marble Hornets
  • Alex = Guy that started to make MH
  • Jay = Narrator
  • Tim, Brian, Seth = Three cast/crew members of MH
  • Amy = Alex's girlfriend
  • Jessica = Roommate of Amy & character in season 2
  • TTA/tta = totheark
  • TO = The Operator/Slenderman
  • Masky = guy with a white mask
  • Hoody = guy (girl?) with a hoody

After you get caught up, the names I didn't list should make sense.

EDIT: Fixed spelling and such

So this is why you are almost always the one to randomly necro old threads.

Meh, the "Tweetpocalypse" wiki entry can be difficult to locate, so I'm going to spoiler it here for you.. These are the only few twitter entries (in my opinion) that are actually SUPER important to the MH story.

Read these BEFORE you watch "Enttry #37"

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Monday, March 21, 2011:

12:37 AM: Found something that makes me not want to go through the rest of these tapes. Headache. Laying down for now. Uploading it tomorrow.
9:18 PM: Trying to upload entry #37, but I can't sign in to youtube.
9:43 PM: People that follow me: Is youtube letting you sign in?
10:07 PM: Judging by the response, I'm the only one having this problem…
10:42 PM: I may have temporarily forgotten my password.
11:00 PM: I keep trying different ones but nothing's working.
11:12 PM: Come on! http://twitpic.com/4c08b0
11:31 PM: I've tried all the passwords I've ever used. None are working.
11:46 PM: Why can't I remember!
11:55 PM: I can't use the forgotten password feature because it's linked to aan old email address that I also don't remember the password of.

Tuesday, March 22, 2011:

12:04 AM: I have the worst hheadache right now..
12:14 AM: Keep thnking I'm hearing things.

Hey there,

Welcome to Unfiction and the brilliant world of Marble Hornets! Despite you wanting a recap, might I suggest watching the series from the beginning? It might seem a little arduous, but when I started watching the series mid last year, I got through all the entries in a day because of just how brilliant this series is. MH is pretty addictive and will drive you insane for the wait for the next entry, but the speculation here is half of the fun Smile

There's a great little community here with some of the nicest people you'll ever meet. Just stay away away from the fan fiction, I haven't checked, but what I've heard...well...(People tend to ship Slendy with a lot of characters...)

On a side note, Marble Hornets is a personal project of the creators Joseph De Large and Troy Wagner and in saying that, you do have to be patient for the entries. Not saying that you wouldn't, but I've introduced a lot of people to the series and they've had an expectation that it should update every week. (There usually is an update every two weeks, mind, but that's not a rule).

However, believe me, each entry is usually worth the wait Smile

Hope you enjoy your time here!

*Dons black cloak and address the rest of Unfiction!* We have our sacrafice! Prepare him for our Troseph God!

First welcome!

Next.... I really have to be "that guy", because unfortunately it looks like our usual guy won't be posting for a while. For general questions like this pleeeease ask in the general discussion thread, or the latest entry, or the off topic thread. While I'm don't agree we should only have like 4 threads in our forum, we don't need a thread for every question. Not a huge deal but just keep it in mind, you'll get more responses that way as well.
