UPDATE: livejournal - we're too late!

I finally solved it!
Muninn's damned letter cube has been vanquished at last!!! I wasn't sure I had it at first (among other things, I'm not sure that's how you spell "Morice"), but when I got there I found the notes from Muninn on the scrolls where he knew I'd think to look. It was disconcerting not being able to see what I was doing at first, but then I thought to turn echo on and all was right.

So I guess Ewan solved it before us.
But how!? Confused

Echo, in Greek mythology: mountain nymph. She assisted Zeus in one of his amorous adventures by distracting Hera with her chatter. For this Hera made her unable to speak except to repeat another's last words. She fell in love with Narcissus, but when he rejected her, she pined away until only her voice remained. In another myth, she was loved by Pan, who, because he could not win her, caused shepherds to tear her asunder; Gaea buried her limbs, leaving only her voice.

So..."turn echo on" may be a reference to Narcissus...I don't know...

Hmm, apparently the middle part goes "Morice the Sharing Patrol"... "fan" probably ? Still can't piece the rest of it together. Sharing Patrol is some obscure band I've never heard of. "Morice" makes about as much sense as "YHS". No wonder nobody was able to crack this. Sigh.

Some progress, finally

Well, I've managed to piece together the ending, it seems, it's not THAT hard, although there are so many possible ways to go from each letter it quickly gets confusing, even using a spreadsheet grid and marking used letters . I'm pretty sure it ends:

"...Morice the Sharing Patrol fan could tell you more. Munin"

The beginning is "Find YHS in'. I'm leaning towards "in the land of" something...

Of course we're still missing the most important part! Persumably the clue to the web site where to look for Morice...

those extra mu's are so confusing!

i'm leaning towards, "in the land of the" myself...but what comes after that i don't know. nothing seems to make anything coherent. argh.

Full solution?

OK, like Ewan, I'm not at all sure this is right, but it sort of works (punctuation is mine):

"Find YHS in the Land of the Mumu. Be wary of Dr. Morice. The Sharing Patrol fan could tell you more. Munin"

I'm pretty sure about the "Be wary of" being in there... It's the only good way to solve the upper right corner that I've found. The usage of the mu
s is still really iffy.

Does this get us anywhere? The only google hit on "land of the mumu" is some Keanu worship site, which does have a guestbook, however. But I haven't found any evidence of YHS, munin, Morice, or Sharing Patrol fans there. Probably not the right site.

Gonna google around some more. Ewan claims he was able to find "the notes from Muninn on the scrolls where he knew I'd think to look. It was disconcerting not being able to see what I was doing at first, but then I thought to turn echo on and all was right."

If anybody finds a better solution, let me know!

Ok, this seems promising... Check this web site:
http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/Park/7853/nuts.html

One of entries in the list is "MuMu Land", or mumu.oanet.com. Clicking the link invokes my TelNet Windows program. This immediately got my attention, because when Ewan spoke off turning on Echo, this was really weird to me, as that would seem to be a reference to some sort of primitive computer communication method.

Well, guess what? Telnet is a primitive communication program, and under its Terminal->Preferences, you can turn on "Local Echo". Being a computer geek, I vaguely remember this should let you see the characters you type on your end as well as sending them to the other system. So this make a lot of sense in terms of what Ewan was describing!

However, I haven't been able to get anywhere via that telnet link so far. All I get is "Connect Failed" - unable to open a connection to mum.oanet.com.

Hmm... Pretty esoteric stuff, huh? Yet it fits too damn well to just be coincidence, no?

Ok, this MuMu Land is apparently something called a "talker", which I guess is some sort of primitive chat room using TelNet. Pre-web technology. It turns out this one is fairly popular and you can find links to it from various people's web pages.

I finally managed to connect into from this URL: http://mordeth.pankurokku.com/links/

It gave me a welcome banner (Welcome to the Majestic Land of Mu), asked for my name, and I guess it didn't recognize me, since it then asked for a password and to confirm it. So I guess I made a new account. I put in the name as munin and a password of YHS, BTW. In case somebody tries that and figures they've found something, all you've probably found is my own new account!

Anywho, I'm inside now, and just figured out how to do stuff by using a /help, so I'm going to look around some for evidence of the bird's presence. This place will probably scare the pants off of non-computer savvy folk, BTW... It's like 1982 all over again...

The latest reason I think I'm on the right track is because Ewan used the word "scroll", which is also apparently "talker" terminology...

more later.
