Pre-exposure: What is considered "too much"?
Facebook, indiegogo, etc.

It seems to me that there has been a recent trend in PM's letting people know that they are about to launch an "ARG" (or transmedia project). It might not be direct, it could be through something as innocent as trying to obtain funding for their project through the ever growing number of "donate to my project" web-sites.

My question is: "How much is too much? What crosses the line and breaks the 'TINAG' 'rule'"? "Is there a 'rule' anymore'"?

*The number of PM's doing this is minute, but I would still like to understand the answer - for future reference*

Thank you in advance.

I think you may find the most common answers are monetization and recognition. For larger projects, especially marketing or commercial projects where legal issues and continuing careers are on the line, it's understandable. There are also some players who like to know who the creator(s) are as a matter of trust and expectation (and vice versa; some PMs may use their reputation to improve their initial audience), while some (like myself) still prefer the mystery of the creator and to let the project stand on its own (then seek recognition afterwards Wink ).
From what I can tell grassroots args still favour anonymity for the most part.

There a number of a reasons, but they tend evolve over the years. Times have certainly changed since 2001-2004 Coffee

I was quite stress in my last ARG to actually 'break' this rules. I never had advertise my ARG in advanced, but for this one I created a 'opt-in' page for anyone who wanted to be part of it when it would start.

I was surprised by the reaction, most people where actually grateful for it. Instead of having my ARG building up slowly, and lot of player missing the first event, it started stronger with close to 10 000 peoples who opt-in. (Actual number are 9 500 somethings)

So, based on this experience, my advice is : go for it.
