[SPEC/SPOILER]-"but_not_likely" My Heart Stopped

I will place spoiler tags for those who haven't heard it yet.

It's a simple joy but I have to tell you, my heart skipped a beat while listening to "but_not_likely". I preface this with – I'm a total uber-dork for those moments where they start tying things into the mainstream reality of an established story. These instants always give you moments of clarity when you see the details in the story that you missed before. I think I just figured out where the artifact that's at Chawla Base came from and how the Covie's found Earth.

All it took to make my heart skip a beat was three simple words…
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Pillar

Of

Autumn

I admit... If I had been a cat, my ears would have perked up. Smile

So, I'm kinda confused on the timeline now.
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Wasn't the Pillar of Autumn destroyed in Halo 1? How can information regarding the artifact be coming from that ship when it was destroyed in the blast that took out the Halo installation? Does this mean that the radio-play timeline occurs before it's destruction, or am I just wrong about the timeline/plot points?

ilovebees started, theoretically, before Halo 1 started... it spanned the time of Reach's fall (end of the firsrt novel), happening parallel the events of the game (Pillar of Autumn, Halo destruction), and is spec'd to end and lead right into Halo 2. so yeah, Halo happened concurrently, presumably about a month ago, in 2552 (someone want to quote the dates in The Flood novel?).

Besides which, in the books the Covenant already know where Earth is when MC gets off Halo. The only reason they didn't attack immediately was because MC and an Admiral came up with a cooky plan to wipe out most of the Covenant attack force.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
I checked in the book First Strike. It turns out that the dates are not clear. About a week elapses. From the Master Chief's perspective, Reach falls on August 30, 2552 and he is in the Halo debris field in the Longsword on September 22, 2552. This would be about 3 weeks between the fall of Reach and the end of Halo 1.

But, the artifact that the Covenant are seeking on Reach bends time and space. According to Dr. Halsey, for some reason, Cortana and the Master Chief were on an event path intersecting the crystal. And time and space warped to make that occur. Anyway, after destroying the Flood he ends up on Reach in time to rescue Dr. Halsey and the artifact on about September 7, 2552.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Reach fell on August 30, 2552.

It became public knowledge in the HighCom of the UNSC on September 4th. A full statement couldn't have followed much later. From First Strike

The dates in The Flood get dodgier because they use a weird mission start + mission time format. Still, the first chapters (roughly analogous to the level "The Pillar of Autumn") ship time is used to time stamp, and it's the early hours of September 19, 2552.

By the time Master Chief got to the Pillar of Autumn again, and the Maw begins, the total time Master Chief has been on Halo has been 76 hours.

First Strike ends on September 13. Before they get to Halo, despite the fact that the events of First Strike happen after Halo, at least to Master Chief and Cortana. Yep, more time travelley goodness.

Hope that helps people.

Luke P.

edit - turns out I was too slow.

So, Basil, if I travel back to 1969 and I was frozen in 1967, I could go look at my frozen self. But, if I'm still frozen in 1967, how could I have been unthawed in the 90's and traveled back to the Sixties?

Oh, no, I've gone cross-eyed.
