Slendy looks quite anachronistic in a forest. I think it makes him creepier, like finding a wrench in your fridge or something.
Which is indeed fuel for nightmares.

Thanks. You can keep it.

I'm totally going to randomly break into people's houses and plant wrenches in their refrigerators.

A few weeks back I mentioned the Slender Man to my mum (I was asking about dernier of tights and being a good parent she was naturally a little weirded out). When I described it, we both sort of simultaneously arrived at the same point of reference:

I couldn't find a Slender Man 0rigins thread, and this seemed like the most obvious place to mention it.
Anyhooze, it seems to have been a resonant image for a while.

A quote I liked from the original thread was "The closer you think you are to understanding the Slender Man, the more incorrect you really are."

Re: Why does the Slender Man like the woods? He certainly isn't dressed for hiking...

No, seriously. Why does an eight foot guy in a business suit hang out in the woods? Wouldn't it make more sense if he hung out in the city at night after everyone normally goes to bed and preys on homeless people? What's up with a guy who's dressed for a day of work at the bank doing hanging out in the middle of an enchanted forest?
Theory Time!
The slenderman is an otherworldly being (or a small aspect of that being) trying to manifest in our world. So it takes on a form that humans will trust, in order to lure them in.
But because Slendy's unfamiliar with our world, he didn't get it quite right... hence the unnatural height, and the facelessness, and the anachronism of a businessmen in a forest.

Part of what makes The Slender Man so perfectly frightening is just how out of place he is. He's unnatural. You see him in the background and it's scary because he shouldn't be there. But he is. The suit just adds another layer to it.
The way I see it, if The Slender Man could perfectly replicate a human, he would. He'd have a face. He'd talk. He'd blend in perfectly and carry out his goals that way. But he can't.

That means "out of time." I don't think there is a noun for "out of place/inappropriately placed/unfitting for the place." I'm not getting anything from Google.

Probably anatopism. It's a derived word but would mean "out of place".

I'm still not sure I fully understand everything, then again, I'm probably not supposed to.
The Slender Man, in some mythos, has been stalking mankind since the dawn of time-- was he always a guy in a 20th century business suit? Or, did his appearance change over the years? Like, did he wear something different in the 1300s, when he was known as "Der Ritter?" Did he suit up in Egyptian garb when they drew him on the pyramid walls?

I suppose you could extrapolate from him wearing a suit now that he'd wear the equivalent of a suit then. Something authoritative and trustworthy. My money's on priests. Slendy'd look rad in this get up, imo.

Some stories said he changed with the times. One, I do not remember the name, went into a lengthy speculation about how he "takes the form of faceless authority."
So in the dark ages, he would have been a knight, was the example they gave.
The Der Ritter things usually describe him as "looking like a nobleman."
