SBARG: A SBURB-themed alternate reality game
Or so it seems... I really hope it's just an ARG.

Okay. For those of you who might not know what SBURB is, it's a fictional video game that plays a pretty important role in the webcomic Homestuck.

Long story short, the game: A) warps reality, B) gives its players a bunch of weird powers, C) destroys the world they happen to be living on, and D) is capable of creating an entire new universe with the players as the new universe's gods.

...The latter outcome assumes, however, that everything has gone according to plan for the players in question. (Things not going according to plan are another big part of Homestuck, along with - amongst other things - weird reality-warping shenanigans of various kinds, communication between two separate failed SBURB sessions, and... oh, hell, why don't you just peruse the MSPA wiki?)

Anyway. That being said, there is, it seems, an ARG inspired by Homestuck which is currently in its opening stages.

The trailhead is here: http://sbarg.tumblr.com
There's some discussion on the game in this thread on the MSPA forums: http://www.mspaforums.com/showthread.php?50561-ARG-Sbarg
And also on Reddit: http://www.reddit.com/r/homestuck/comments/10lowl/sbarg_what_appears_to_be_a_sburb_alternate/

Apparently the first phase of this game involves finding (and submitting) SBURB game codes located in the real world, with the locations of the codes listed in this post on the SBARG tumblr.

Seems like whoever's running this is in it for the long haul, considering some of the locations those co-ordinates resolve to - there's one in Seattle, WA, two in New York City, one in London, and one in Tampa, FL (and those are just the ones I personally looked up, on the off-chance that I might be able to hit one of the locations).

wow, I know the exact location of one of those, it's a place I frequently visit. What do I look for? I'm not playing the game, and I have no idea how to upload a photo from a camera, but I'd love to help if it is needed. I hope the item stays there until I can make the trip tonight.

Well, gentlemen, it seems we have some more things to investigate.

The first is a sound file entitled 1824x1486.mp3, the second is a rather unusual image.

I've managed to save the MP3 (and I've uploaded a copy here), but the image will have to wait, as Tumblr seems to have crashed.

EDIT: It's back up, and I've got the image - a 1.8MB PNG. That seems kind of unusual to me - is it possible to hide information in PNGs a la JPHide/JPSeek?

I'm not sure how many people here on UF are Homestuck fans. The game might be better enjoyed from within their own fandom and forums. But I have a family member who is obsessed with it, and she tells me the gibberish names in the image above are like their equivalent to the names of the Eldritch gods.

We went to the location in San Jose last night but found nothing. It might be that the code is hidden inside the library which was closed at the time.

I haven't logged in here since This Is My Milwaukee fizzled out, but I'm so glad there's an SBARG thread!

I'm conciliatoryClaw.tumblr.com and my team is named "Oldstucks." We'll see if that's actually relevant.

Also if you'd like to join a team, there are people advertising on http://sbargsessionhelp.tumblr.com/

and more info on http://sbarghq.tumblr.com/

I'll add any info I can as soon as we learn more.

We're currently running the soundfile through Audacity. Seeing if we can find anything interesting from it. Updates soon.

I am also looking for a Cthulhu Mythos/Eldest Gods language translator for the PNG--the character/s associated with that style of speech are heavily based upon it.

SBARG states that we will have more information within 24 hours from unspecified-time-zone 11:46 PM.

Tumblr user littlestreamsayshi copied down the code that appears in the video for "==> enter."

My teammate was unable to get any real info from the mp3. Just an insistent statement that there were horns (clown/bicycle) honking in the background.

Edited to add that the PNG does not correspond to "actual" Cthulhu mythos speech, but instead seems to be a set of lines from [S] Seer: Descend. http://www.mspaintadventures.com/?s=6&p=005595

Next clue:

REF 031 WOR v4: pg750 c1 l7-8
"6ds9$npe"

Tumblr user aluxuthespider states that page 750, lines 7 and 8 in the book (The World Book Encyclopedia of People and Places) read as follows:

"Correspondents may agree to use all 26 ciphertext alphabets of the table in turn, repeating them if the message is more than 26 letters long."

I can't get to the library to check the book myself so I'm curious.

ETA:

Cipher resolved to "keywords" and http://sbarg.tumblr.com/keywords found.

I don't think there was a coordinate for Tampa, by the way. It was in Merritt Island, which is a long, long ways away, or else I would've snapped that sucker up immediately.

If you haven't yet, I strongly suggest going through the MSPA forums that Macavity linked in the first post. Stuff gets going at around page 87 and most of the codes have been solved on that thread so far.

As of now, according to the SBARG tumblr, we're waiting for the next clue which should be in approximately 11 hours.

I just got into Homestuck about two weeks ago after months of insisting that it wasn't worth my time. My friends made me sit down and read it with them and now I'm super psyched!

Should Homestuck knowledge be relevant later down the road, I am currently up to date with the comic itself. And a bunch of us on the MSPA forums are working on it too, of course.

So yeah. I tried to bring this to the attention of UF earlier while it still had that 24 Hours image on the site and the messed up mp3, but Idk.
