wait... if Halo 2 is set in Mombasa, Africa, then that means the covies hit earth... and if we shut off the timer or whatever in the future, then shouldn't the covies not have attacked? maybe they're doomed to screw up, or i'm just not thinking this through lol

My thinkings on this, if the voice in the TV Ad is truly Durga, then this is the setup to rid of us all of the minor, unimportant to Halo 2 characters (IE, killed off or arrested) and leads Durga back to ONI HQ, and what not, along with a meet up with MC.

After all this character development they couldn't just kill off Jersey, Jan, Kamal, and Rani! That wouldn't make any sense. Durga's a clever girl, she'll come up with a way to steal the artifact without anyone noticing!

Oooorrrr maybe they won't be in time, the artifact will go off, aliens will fall from the sky (Oh, right, wort wort. Yeah, wort wort.) and then Master Chief John 117 will have to do his thing.

Or the artifact could be a remote device to trigger the other Halo's int he universe.

Or they could shut it off, but it's been going for a while. Chances are the Covies have already located the origin of the signal (if that's what brought them to Earth in the first place)

to be honest I believe the Covenant found the coordinated to Earth in much the same way they found the coordinate to Reach in the rock artifacts on Cote d'Azur

I have a feeling that they are NOT going to earth to destroy the human race...

this of course is just my spec... but from reading the books, it seems to me that Earth is more than just a target for them...

I agree with tsioc, as usual. I think the Covvies dearly want this artifact, because the artifact is vital to their plan of universal domination. It's been specced that the artifact is responsible for the slipspace screwup that rendered the Apocalypso into pretty colors and sent Melissa to the ILB server. I definitely agree with this spec, and I think all of this is going to get sorted out on Sunday. Crap man, we've already got half of our questions answered on the 404 page as far as Mel and the SP is concerned, and while these answer may not be satisfactory to all people (like me), they still explain what happened.

As far as this being a trap, I think you can be sure that Standish is aware that something is going to go down. I don't think he would be so foolish as to expect Rani to completely believe his lies concerning Herzog's alleged sanity. However, is he expecting a 1.1 to show up? Is he expected a couple of 1.1's to show up? I don't know.

Now I'm really starting to get worried. If I was right, and Standish heard everything, the whole ordeal at Chawla base could have been faked. And if Standish (or his allies) have that much of a jump on our civilian friends, there could be real trouble ahead.
