Yet another question by me

Anyone offering a place to stay in Chicago? It will be my girlfriend and I, and we only have enough money for gas to get there, so any help would be appreciated.

[spec] thoughts and concerns

l0rd0fm0rgul wrote:
Ok, Ive been lookin into where this thing might be held, and I found something that was interesting. In the New York thread, they said that all 4 of these locations were within a block of a movie theater. Not just any theater, a Loew's Theater. From what I heard, the Halo 2 commercial that started this was only shown at Loew's Theaters. Coincidence? I'm not so sure. I decided to look up any Loews Theaters near our gps coordinates. I found one at 601 North Martingale Road, Schaumburg, IL. which is exactly one block south of the axon. If you look at inio's axon mapper, it shows a huge building that covers two blocks. Our coordinates show it to be right at the center of the building, and the address for the theater is in the southwest corner of the block, according to mapquest. Wouldn't it be awesome to play Halo 2 on a giant movie screen? I don't have time to look into the exact addresses of Loew's movie theaters in the other 3 cities to see if it is true that all four cities have Loew's there (I have to go take a test soon, which I haven't studied for at all cause I've been following ILB so much), so maybe someone else can do that. Just thought I'd share my speculation with you guys, and see what you think.

Edit:Here's the link I got that gave me the address of the Loew's Theater, along with what shows are playing that night. Someone also said that one of the Loew's Theaters had cancelled all shows that night, but I haven't found any confirmation of that yet.

i know i might take a lot of crap for this, but hear me out.

many signs point to this being a halo 2 multiplayer event... the Loews movie theaters, the over 17 age restriction... i agree that it fits. if it is halo 2 in some fashion i wont be too disappointed, but honestly, we'll be able to play it on xbox not 5 days afterwards.

so here is some [spec] mixed with facts:

i spoke with DarkForge on iRC last night regarding certain aspects of the previous ARG for the movie A.I., known as the Beast. if you want to know about it, start here http://www.seanstewart.org/beast/intro/ i was curious about it because apparently there were events where players gathered in that ARG as well. DarkForge, a player of the Beast, explained to me how ILB compares to the Beast. Essentially the Beast seemes to have had a higher budget than ILB... it spanned many in-game websites and its puzzles were incredibly intricate and complex. DarkForge attended one of the events and described how it was all done in-game with live actors who were part of an anti-robot company (part of the game). the attendees solved puzzles at the site. also, and i'm not exactly clear on this, but i think updates were occuring at the same time on the websites. the game was so careful to never admit that it wasn't a game that attendees at the event actually followed one of the actors to a coffee house after the event had ended... not to be mean, but because in the Beast, that might have been something you had to do in order to solve a puzzle. i'm not saying this wouldn't happen in ILB, i'm just trying to establish the fact that the Beast did a great job of never admitting it was a game to the players.

anyway, so here is some [spec] to go with that... the guy whose page i linked to above was one of the men behind the Beast. apparantly there have been several similarities between ILB and the Beast and some subtle clues have been dropped. so I would speculate that these 4 upcoming events have the potential to be the equivalent of the meetups in the Beast, which personally, i think would be awesome. an in-game experience where some part of the game is played out or where we get to interact as a group and solve puzzles would be really cool. in fact, i think it would be more cool than playing halo 2. but the evidence that points to ILB being a much lower budget ARG than the Beast would indicate that these events might be something less in-game and more "Halo 2 multiplayer". although this would be cool, it would not be as fulfilling a meetup for something that, for me and many others, has been more about a awesome story than about Halo 2 multiplayer. which yes, will be totally awesome also, but i just don't really think would be as cool as something in-game and with actors or something.

basically my point in all this is that i think, among all this talk about practicing your Halo/Halo 2 skills and how team Chicago is going to emerge vistorious (GO TEAM!Very Happy) ... we should stop and consider the fact that a single copy of Halo 2, or one X-box might not even be at the event at all. and i really hope that many people aren't dissapointed if it turns out that there isn't any Halo 2 multiplayer. But honestly, i don't think Halo 2 multiplayer is at the heart of what this ARG is about. Halo 2 single player, sure! but i don't think we'll sit around and watch someone play single player, or all have a chance to work through the single player campaign.

anyway, thats my 2 cents to a dollar. i just wanted to get that out there... and if anyone thinks it belongs in another thread feel free to tell me and i'll move it or delete it or whatever.

i'm curious to know what others think about this Smile

PS: Congratulations to us for being the most active thread for any of the events!

I agree that ILB isn't about Halo 2 Multiplayer, but I think it will be involved as a "treat".

However, I think a lot of us agree that it's just as much about meeting a lot of other beekeepers (and maybe some PMs/VAs) as it is a sneak peak at Halo 2 goodness.

Okay - I've been thinking about this, and I'm going to go ahead and offer the following:

My next door neighboors just moved out of their apartment (2BR, living and dining room). It is cleared out of any furniture, but the kitchen, bathroom and shower work. I have two air matteress, and sleeping bags. If people bring their own bags and mattresses, I'm sure 10 people would have no problem staying there.

I live in Evanston, which is about 20 miles straight East (about a half mile from the lake.) If you are interested, let me know by PM.

Other things-
I just saw a Halo 2 trailer/advertisment on Spike TV. It got me alll excited and I played a few levels on Legendary to brush up a bit.

Finally, I might take on the task of before and after festivities, but I want to toss out some planning issues-

1) Are we agreed that the LOWES theater is the most likely location?

2) What time will others arive EARLY - food, getting to know eachother, finding the location!

3) Who will stay late - Gameworks? ( Angelo, robogriff, krystyn, tycho)

I'm going to recommend that we choose 18+ places vs. 21+ places as to include everyone that might come. Also, If there is a moderator that could start separate Chicago - pregame and postgame topics where we could coordinate, that might be more helpful.

I will probably be in the area around 3:30 local time. I mentioned the Hooters (because I have never been to one), but there is also an Olive garden and a sports bar called JOE's. I had limited time to really get a good feel for the area, but I might head back over there this weekend and do some cartographing.

I was thinking about all of this also, and a thought occurred to me, [SPEC] maybe there is a right place to go and three wrong ones. I do not mean that everyplace we go will be nothing there but just cords. but it seems like most PMs are coming from the SF area. Is this a crazy idea or does it make any sense to anyone?

I don't know if this was trout or not but I'll ask. I read somewhere that Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow had a similar pre-release event. They set up a few systems in a movie theatre and played while others could watch on the big screen. Maybe I dreamt this, but I swear I read this somewhere... anybody know? Confused

Yes you would be correct, it took place in NYC and LA to let the two cities duke it out. Here is the site http://forum.teamxbox.com/showthread.php?threadid=251154

I agree it isn't only about Halo 2 multiplayer, but I think it will be the focus. What else would we need to be 17 years old to participate in (it doesn't say anything about an age limit to be a spectator, so I doubt it is a movie of any kind), it is a "Combat Training Exercise," it utilizes squad-oriented combat simulation LIVEware... it sounds exactly like a Halo 2 multiplayer even involving all 4 cities at once, by using Live, the xbox online service. If you have any other ideas of what this could be, I'd love to hear them, but from all the clues it looks like it will be Halo 2 multiplayer. Sure, there may be more than that, butI doubt we will meet in-game characters like the Beast example (which I know almost nothing about, so Im not sure how similar it is), since all the characters except Melissa and the Sleeping Princess (both of which don't really exist, we can't *meet* a computer program) live 548 years from now. I'm not saying you are completey wrong, something more than just Halo 2 will probably happen, I just have no idea what. But whatever it is, I am willing to fly over 1000 miles to be there, so if that isn;t dedication, I don't know what is (maybe if one of the Londoners will come, that would beat me, but other than that I don't know if anyone can).

So the point is, be ready for anything - but take a few hours to play some Fregging Halo.

I assume everyone will have digital cameras, but who's got the video setup.

We might have a problem if it is in a movie theater trying to bring a video camera, since they don't like that kind of thing. If we play the game early, there is a very good chance that we will have to sign a non-disclouser waiver, which would forbid us from any kind of video or photography.

The more I ponder the idea, it has to be multiplayer LIVE. The underlying fact is that this bees community was a marketing machine for the game. I don't know if it was expected, but the community grew so tight and met the challenges presented... the prize has to be all of us duking it out on LIVE. Such a happy ending.

I thought I made it quite clear at the beginning of my post that I agree that most all of the signs point to this being a Halo 2 muliplayer event. My post was about how I would like for the event to be more about the story than about Halo 2 multiplayer. I don't disagree with the evidence that this will most likely be a Halo 2 multiplayer event.

Really? I came into ILB because of Halo, but even if ILB turned out to have nothing to do with Halo or Halo 2 I still would have enjoyed it and participated in cross-country meetups like the one coming up. The fact that this all ties into the Halo 2 story was a happy bonus.

I guess this event will tell us something very important... was ILoveBees less about making a self contained story and more about selling us Halo 2, or vice versa? Honestly, the answer is probably somewhere in between and its just how far on one side of that spectrum are the PMs.

I'm looking forward to meeting all of you, and I think this event could be a once in a lifetime opportunity. I think we're going to have a blast and whatever happens will be awesome, I just wanted to add another point of view to the whole "its definitely Halo 2 multiplayer!" discussion.
