having had a quick look through the list of links, i can quite honestly say i am still not 100 percent sure if this is real or ARG. Just when i think there is something that points me to ARG there pops up a million other things that scream no its not

For example, those Facebook pages are all very well established, apart from the Hogwarts joker gormless harry.

I also agree that if this is ARG then it does go very deep.

It would be easy for someone to find out who the inspector of your local police branch would be online, so i don't put much weight behind the fact that the police have made comment. Even then the police inspector did say, that they have had no reports.

I can only hope they email soon , perhaps clarifying or denying if this is or is not an ARG.

Gormless Harry is gone.

Anyway, watching this. I really don't know what to make of it at this point.

Would it be ARG-kosher to contact the police officer in question to confirm whether the article was real?

If s/he did make a comment on such an article, I would think that means it likely is a real thing, NOT an ARG.

Hi Angela,
Thanks for getting in touch; as I was unaware of what args was until you informed me of it, I can assure you this is not that.
These are very serious people and I would urge you not to contact them again and to get in touch with me if they respond with anything 'funny'.
My team has been investigating this Cult for over a year now; they are pure evil.
I urge you again; please keep away from them.
I hope this clears things up a little for you.
Kind Regards,

James

bluff or reality? LOL is the point of an ARG for him to say its not an arg.. GAH I am going to have to assume this is NOT an arg.

Yeah, this is rather confusing. So just a few totally random observations.

Looking at the facebook page it seems the owner invited a lot of the members to the page (most thank him for the invite) suggesting that maybe he went randomly adding people and some look awfully like spam accounts that have been brought to boost page numbers.

Also there is a major change of tone on the page starting a few weeks ago, most of the posts are random creepy pictures with often silly joke captions its not until recently that that whole "cult" thing has been thrown around.

The Tumblr is the same, the articles are all from other sites (he does cite them so wins points as a good academic) and its only recently that the cult thing has been bounced around

The business card just looks bad, I mean its formatting is odd and off, its not something that has been designed by a graphic designer. I would think that any massively powerful cult would have some sense of aesthetics as opposed to such a random looking card. Also just the idea of saying the cult is massively dangerous and should be avoided and then posting their e-mail, if you don't want people involved then why do it?

Quote:

"Oh dear me! Have the Shadows got Dr Vincent???

Quick - they'll be torturing him with constant playing of Apache - somebody help the poor man!"

This man wins an internet

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Just for those who have better things to do than look up old English guitar bands, The Shadows were a band that played instrumentals most famous for working with Cliff Richard and their lead guitarist Hank Marvin. Apache was one of their biggest hits

I second the police thing, all of the police responses sound pretty stock and what they say in basically every article you read (I think they have to offer some comment as part of procedure) but none of them actually link to the case.

Also, am I the only one who finds it funny that this is a secret investigation of an hidden cult. A cult so hidden they give you an e-mail address (which is traceable) and do their rituals in town centers? I mean the best way to stay hidden is to do your evil ritual in broad daylight in a place where loads of people could see or record you.

I would suggest that while this may not be an ARG this is marketing for the "secret project" the book says about. The book is selling routine ideas for magicians so whats the best way to show you are a good magician whose routines are worthy of copying?

I mean convincing a town you are an evil cult, getting into the press and then doing a "ritual" (which turns out to be a big magic routine) which will get in the papers is pretty good book promotion and big promotion for you.

So James just posted this on facebook

Quote:
So if you were running a secret 'cult' would you hand out business cards?
The answer is of course no.
However; if you were so warped by your ideas and belief systems that you think you are actually helping people...that's a different story altogether isn't it.
The Shadow Cult IS a Cult, they may deny it but me and my team will prove it.
We will get the proof we need, watch this space.

Why do I get the feeling this is response to either us or people on the article who point out that a cult would be silly to give out these cards.

Of course this does not help the issue much

I would question where he teaches, There is no university in Tamworth, he could commute to New College Oxford (its about 2 hours) but even then I would question them having a talk on the paranormal.

yeah,

I read his reply to your mail... still makes me wonder..

if his team is investigating for over a year, why is his presence only in the last month or so.. why not keep the operation covert until all the proof is found and then come out..

why post all the "bogus" material, on paranormal occurrences and tools, only to use the space to talk about the cult and nothing else..

It still nags at me that this might be an ARG, and one that is well thought over..

I will ask some arg friends on twitter for their opinion..

I think this can go two ways: either the police will say no, they have no idea about this which isn't really helpful one way or the other, or [like how some candid camera shows in the US do, I don't know about the UK police] if it's a situation where the police might be called, let the police know ahead of time that ti's just a game/act and there isn't any real danger, so then you would probably hear that back. -shrug- It's up to you, and if this is an ARG with as much thought put into it as it looks, I'd assume you'd get the second option ["yes, this is a game, we've been contacted already", ect]

Can we get this friend of yours to play along a little and see what happens? Tell James that he IS a student...?
