Well, I just got an invite to muck around with the Ingress app on my phone (Pantech Breakout, fwiw).

First off, it seems there are three factions at play in this game: the Shapers, the Human Resistance and the Enlightened.

The Shapers are some kind of extradimensional entity that is capable of infecting human thought and shaping it towards their ends. (I know, I know: THANK YOU, CAPTAIN OBVIOUS!)

The Human Resistance is attempting to harness portals and Exotic Matter (henceforth referred to as XM) in order to create energy fields that help humans resist Shaper influence.

The Enlightened are also attempting to harness portals and XM, but with the intent of using them to create energy fields that amplify Shaper influence.

And I have to say, folks, while Resistance forces hold a majority of the fields right now, according to the in-app intel map almost the entire Northeast U.S. is under Enlightened control.

I actually found an IRC channel that is the primary source for the people that are actually solving the puzzles. Best place to be for either helping with the puzzles or having the first shot at being able to get passcodes that actually work before they get used up.
