Cybele Shepherd

Prior to the end of the hunt, did anyone figure out that the ship was a fir tree?

In hindsight, I understand it, but it feels like a seriously obscure clue to me.

I'm also curious to know how many people concluded that we only needed to go 250 Captain's feet / Crayon lengths. This clue seems fair. I just missed it.

Tree

While I did not associate the ship with representing a tree, I did consider there was a tree somewhere which was the target of the hunt as indicated in ep.1

I was thinking along the lines of the target tree being within 250 feet/paces of the ship. However I wasn't thinking in terms of puppet paces!

No Use Of Homages

I thought we were told not to use homages as clues. I believe that if this was not stated someone would have found the chest. To me Maddie Hayes is a homage. I knew that the ship would not be a ship as in the sense that we know a ship to be. I am sure that all you people who have done treasure hunts before would have certainly found the chest if you were told that homages were not a clue. So many of you are pretty smart.

I agree that it seems underclued, though I think it's too early to judge that before we see the full solution. I can imagine that it might have been more feasible to solve for someone who had followed the chain of clues up to that point in Episode 8 and then thought about how they had not yet used Mulligan's ILL->ELE rule. But still it seems very tough. It makes me wonder if some of the other Episode 7 and 8 clues were of comparable difficulty since no one seems to have solved any of them, even after visiting Floyd Bennett Field.

My theory is that the puppeteers were afraid that someone would solve this too easily and thus they made the Ep 7 & 8 clues more obscure than they needed to. I'm not sure how many fir trees there are in NYC, but I'm guessing that it wouldn't have tipped anything off to make it clearer that we needed to find a fir tree.

Apart from the Flying Birdy clue, I couldn't solve anything about Ep 7 & 8. There were a few plausible crows nests in FBF, so that was worth multiple visits, but nothing ever really clicked.
