I want a job in this kind of stuff- any hints, tips?
What kind of path do you take? Where to start?

I've been a pretty active member (well, as active as I can considering there are next to no Dallas-based ARGs that I've seen...;n; ) in the community for two years now, and with the recent catch-up i've played with Byologic, watching all the videos, I want to do something with this medium. I don't know how though... Maybe start out getting a degree in some sort of filmaking?

I like ARGs because they have so much to them- the casting, and scripting, and the basics like story writing and world building. I don't know which part of filmmaking I should focus on to, screen writing or directing or some sort of producing? I have NO idea. I've always loved theatre, and that's really all I know, is the theatre side of the creative process- sets, lights, casting, that kind of stuff.

I had a chance to work with the team for AlterNET, but I got too busy so I couldn't... Do I just wait for some other opening? I know that most of these are grassroots, but Byologic is really successful so far, it seems, and I know that it's one of the expections rather than the rule, but there are also companies for stuff like this, aren't there? I can't name them off the top of my head, but I know there are a few out there...

Blargh, excited ramblings. I know it prob won't be like a huge paying job, and I'm cool with that- the other choice I had was running a bookstore. >< I just think this would be really cool to actually turn into a job, since so far I'm having a lot of fun in pre-production stuff with my own...

EDIT: Sorry for all the typos and ramblings, I'm in a very excited mood right now thinking about maybe having a job with something like this- I've had no real idea what i wanted to do for a while and this just clicks really well. Very Happy

Wanting to become a filmmaker of sorts, and wanting to create your own ARG have damn near nothing in common with each other. ARG's aren't something go go to school for (in my personal opinion at least) if you feel like that would help you then by all means go for it. But don't feel like you need to, hell, you don't even need to go to school for filmmaking period. DIY (Do It yourself) filmmaking and or independent filmmaking as well as other forms of story-telling have "taken off" somewhat in recent history; what i'm trying to say is, if you want to do this sort of thing, you can do it now!

If you would like examples of what i'm talking about, just say so.

I don't mean like "I wanna make a totally out-of-pocket ARG", I'm doing that rihgt now, and have a sequel planned for sometimes 2014. What I'm wanting to do is get a career in the field. Get a job at Fourth Wall Studios or something, start my own production studio or... I don't know. Something.

Seems like everyone keeps misunderstanding me about this...

(and my current ARG that's in pre-production, actually does have a lot of film making elements since it has youtube/live events.)

If you want a professional career, then yes going to some type of film school would certainly help.

Think about what goes into making an ARG.
Film school is good. A creative writing class may help ( for developing awesome stories). Social media classes are a definite along with other marketing classes.
I don't think there is " ARG " degree. Take a look at a job opening at a place likeFourth Wall and see what they require.

Unless you're getting a gig at an established agency, you're probably looking at freelancin' it, or unless you get some VC and start up your own studio.

Keep making stuff. It doesn't have to be ARGs, but it has to be stuff that makes a good name for yourself: that you can be trusted, that you follow through, that you pay attention to the details, and you have a knack for tapping into what makes a good story and a good community.

Unless you get into an established organization or start your own, it will be entirely freelance, it seems.

Learn social media (do not take courses unless you really, really need to...), learn marketing, write, hone your writing, get basic business skills, basic organizational skills, and then some.

If you are trying to get it off the ground yourself, imagine you're making an Internet company start-up and making a movie simultaneously. That is how I would approach it, I suppose.

probably not going to happen in the near future.
Fourth Wall studios lays off staff, halts production

To be fair to them, they are still building a platform, and content will still be needed for that platform, but they will no longer be creating that content in-house.
