Writers on a video game developement team are just as talented or untalented as writers involved in any other medium

Only if you take high end video game stories vs average book writers, though. In the grand scheme of things there's thousands upon thousands of books that are written by people that have a ridiculous amount of talent.

Go play Metal Gear Solid 1-4, King's Quest 1-6, Full Throttle, the Monkey Island Series (excluding 4, which is garbage) Uncharted 1-3, Beyond Good and Evil, Final Fantasy X, or XII (lots of people will also say VI and VII), etc.

Once you rip yourself away from generic EA games, there are amazing stories to be found.

That's kinda rich to assume that I only play generic EA games.

You mentioned lots of Lucas Arts ''can't die point and click'', which is nice. I agree that those games had good writing (why didn't you include Day of tentacles? Way better than Full Throttle IMO, except maybe in the humor department EDIT: oh you mentioned it in a post after, yay). Thing is, they don't do those kind of games anymore. Which is weird, since supposedly video games are moving toward more interactive stories type games, but the quality in writing just decreases (hello Mass Effect).

Beyond that I've beaten all the Final Fantasies from 1 to 9 and I thought the stories weren't close to anything well written. FF7 is especially a game that is talked about over and over for the story, which is true, it's a nice story in itself. The way it is told is just a garbled mess. Too bad I stopped playing those when apparently the writing gets good.

I look at it like special effects in a movie. They can be as good as they want, if there's no story stringing them together, I'm just watching over an hour of fancy explosions. It's entertaining for a little while, but it gets boring after a few minutes.

I also don't care about arbitrary challenges that have no purpose but to give me bragging rights that no one else will care about. So I have very little motivation for superbosses, sidequests, time challenges, etc. But if there is a narrative stringing those together, that is more interesting.

Sounds to me like you're playing some hella boring games. Ever heard of Quake? Starcraft Broodwar? Games that are so deep and complex it takes months to have your basics down? Maybe it's just me, but games were always about problem solving and improvement, and that is where the fun comes from. It's like when you finally understand what you need to do to beat some stage in Castlevania 1... The games you play sound so boring that you say you *watch* explosions over and over. No wonder you need a story to be entertained by that.

Or maybe my definition of fun is just different.

I guess a good example of a game that was a perfect blend of story telling and challenge, while having good gameplay was Planescape: Torment.

You are taking that analogy far too literally.

Although, I will concede that I don't usually play the games that everyone tells me I should play. Time & money are limiting factors.

Something like that. You can't really "prove" that gameplay is over story or vice versa, it's personal preference. I just told you what my preference is, I don't expect you to adopt it.

I don't see that first part as being the case. Writing for a video game as opposed to writing a book doesn't somehow diminish one's talent. There are exceptional writers that work in all forms of entertainment, and the quality of their work isn't automatically determined by the manner in which it's expressed. A high end video game story can be comparable to a high end book writer, and an average video game story can be comparable to an average book.

Heavy Rain has a great story, good graphics, innovative (albeit flawed) game-play but terrible voice acting.

Whoopsidoodle, I didn't mean to come off sounding like such a dick. It was more or less just meant as, "There are some awesome games out there, if you look for 'em" directed at everyone here, in general.

But I'm glad to know that someone else has played Maniac Mansion/Day of the Tentacle - In all my internet travels, I don't think I've ever come across anyone who has before. Which is a shame, because Bernard, Hoagie, and Laverne are some of the funniest game characters of all time IMO.

Oi! Put that rage back in the rage thread. Your last rage post lacked the rage you are posting here. :V

WHY DID MY YOUTUBE TAGS NOT WORK. WHAT THE FUCK UNFICTION.

ModEdit (Zarggg): You need to post the entire YouTube link in the format "http://www.youtube.com/watch?v={VIDEO_ID}". You can't use the HTTPS link or the YouTu.be URL shortener.

It just seems to be not working or the code they auto put in is not correct.

Only 9 or so more days of pain and torment until Entry #66, I'd wager.

Also I may be in the minority here but I don't watch Marble Hornets so I can solve overly cryptic codes. I'll take more Jay crying to us about his bad dreams, please.

I don't have the slightest fucking clue how to solve codes, you might as well post an entry of all random numbers, it would be equally entertaining to me.

At least if I'd gotten involved with EMH a little earlier, I could have helped to find one of the boxes.

But I didn't! Totheark & I are both eternally useless! RAGE!
