First, my condolences to the guy. JJ Abrams is really a hero in my eyes to do such thing. To open his very good guarded secrets. He's a hero.

Now to the Link and announcement (thanx, darkeyedone13).
This looks like they will now communicate with us through trailer, via scanning contents (like Layar or other Augmented Reality Apps). Awesome stuff.

The only bitter thing: hey, only for iOS? No Android?..

From that FB page:

Quote:
Open to US and Canadian (excl. Quebec) residents age 13 or older. Enter by 1/11/13.

So, not available in Europe. Sad

I don't know if that app is specifically tied to areyouthe1701... seems like a separate marketing campaign, though could very well connect with this. I guess we'll see soon...!

As I already supposed in my blog, this app could be useful for two groups at one time:

1) Non-ARG-Players: App will provide latest news, videos and pictures from the new blockbuster by Paramount Pictures
2) ARG-Players: meta-scan alike functions, like they want to hide the informations, useful for ARG (like they did visually in Super8-trailers)

Most interesting functions for us would be:
Quote:

Highlights of the "STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS" app include:

• An audio scan function that can be turned on to automatically recognize and reward users for watching "STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS" content on TV and other media;

• An image scan function that enables users to interact with images printed or viewable in the real world;

• A geofencing function for location-based experiences;

• Exclusive opportunities and special offers only available to app users;

Special offers? I hope, it isn't just about Blue-Ray SALE or so.

Happy to jump into this game!

I can't believe I didn't get into ARGs sooner. I wish I'd found out these existed before, a long time ago I delved pretty deep into the whatsinthebox viral web on my own, but sadly forgot about it for a few years and when I returned to it, everything was gone Sad I've been following along silently on a few different threads for a while now, but I'd love to get involved!

Anyways, I love Star Trek, I'm one of those you could call a Trekkie if you so choose. I think it would be helpful to know who on this thread also has a lot of Star Trek knowledge, because I know that errors occur when someone who doesn't have prior knowledge looks something up and maybe gets it wrong due to errors in wikis or just a faulty memory of facts.

But I digress. Now then, where did it actually say that the app was only for iOS? As an Android user, I feel disgraced.

Welcome on board, SoulVega!
We need Star Trek knowledge (I say it especially regarding my self as beeing completely uninformed about Ster Trek universe). Smile

I also hope, they will do it also for Android, and also, that they will avoid the geographical limitations.

Whatinthebox impressed me also pretty well, I have to admit, that I re-watch the first video perhaps every month Smile

Thankya! I'm wondering if what they're describing is kind of gonna shape up similar to Ingress. The location interactive features are incredibly similar sounding to me.

Signed up for it even though I recently changed to a Windows-based Lumia 920. If anything kicks in I hope I can at least install on my iPad and follow that way.

My two cents on the Android/no Android for the app are that it's utilizing the Gimbal context awareness technologies, a Qualcomm SDK for Android and iOS. I find it hard to believe Paramount would limit itself with an iOS only app. Also I haven't seen an official statement stating one over the other.

From the way I read it they are limiting the winner of the sweepstake to US and Canada. I would imagine that's to save on travel expense getting the winner to the premiere of the movie.

I watched the Qualcomm keynote specifically for the Star Trek announcement, but I gotta say, they're doing some *really* cool stuff in terms of their new chips. I cannot wait for the app to come out!

Maybe the gliphs hidden in the Are You The 1701 image have to be scanned by the app? They could be a special QR code that can only be recognized by it.

So, we are going to download this app that will send us on our missions to locate clues and stuff to achieve a final solution to the game?
This looks to be a really cool next few months..
