I just want to rage slightly. Just this one time.

I AM HERE TO DISCUSS THE EVENTS OF A FICTIONAL SERIES TAKE YOUR PRAISE AND CRITICISM SOMEWHERE ELSE!!!!... Rage....

That was fun.

Okay but really, I guess it's okay for people to say they like or dislike an entry and discuss all of the video's technical aspects in it's appropriate thread, but I feel like we don't talk about what actually happens in the video in-game enough. Then again, I guess there hasn't been a lot to discuss lately (or so I've heard).

/endrage

I mean, it makes me very sad seeing people acting like their opinion is a fact.[/i]

those two statements sound the same to me. i don't get how you could assume anyone would think the first is a fact even if they're saying it

Kid, you don't like any of the entries. I don't honestly understand why you're even here...

I always assumed he was here to make me angrily close unfiction whenever I come here to look at the new entry thread.

That's a lie. I let it be known when I like an entry. I enjoyed pretty much every single entry in season 2.

Semantics are important. There's a reason people hire others to teach them what to say and how to say it to convince the public, so don't be pedantic. "TROY'S EDITING IN THE LAST VIDEO WAS AWFUL" is completely destructive; "I DIDN'T LIKE TROY'S EDITING IN THE LAST VIDEO BECAUSE [X]" can give reasons for it and sounds much less inflammatory.

It would be better to debate ideas and discuss in a polite way with people if they tried improving grammar like this. I mean, it kinda makes me not want to come here and theorize about the entries, it kinda creates an unconfortable place to be in.
On the other hand there are plenty of people who do share their opinions in a very good way so I love reading the topics, even the old ones. Razz

"I didn't like Troy's editing in last video" - Self-report. A statement about one's own aesthetic preferences.

"Troy's editing in last video was awful." - Statement of fact/conjecture. A statement about the objective merits of the video, not simply personal preference.

Neither of those statements are fact. Saying it was awful is still an opinion no matter how much you try to say it otherwise.

Perhaps, but the second statement is worded as if it were fact. It does not indicate that it is the speaker's opinion.

I'm reminded of that one Maddox comic.

"Well that's just your opinion!"
"No shit, who else's would it be?"

Or something like that. I dunno, I don't think people are trying to pass off their opinion as fact by not specifying that it's their opinion. I mean, if a person says something, and it's not a fact, then it's obviously just their opinion, regardless of whether or not they think it's a fact themselves.

You know, unfiction... There was a time I enjoyed visiting you. We would discuss entries and discover codes and whatnot. But then people started complaining about the quality of the acting and the editing... At firstly was simply mocking Jay's ninja skills, but then it became "this entry was just filler!" And "troys editing skills suck!". I don't even bother reading the discussion threads anymore. Guys, I'm not even raging, and I'm sorry. I'm just sad. I miss you, unfiction. The old you.

Of course is not a fact. Thing is they act like it is a fact, and it makes me feel bad, it messes up my gaming experience. Most of you guys may not feel this way, but I really dont enjoy seeing people bitching about things that are subjective like I should feel that way too.

9 times out of 10, it can be assumed that someone who "phrases their opinion as fact" is merely trying to make their argument sound strong & defensible. Yes, this makes it sound less like an argument & more like a declarative statement. This is a rhetorical paradox, I know, but I don't think the way to deal with it is to accuse them of trying to make you think that their opinion is fact. It probably isn't what they're doing.

And frankly, I think a lot of you are making way too damn big of a deal about the complaining. Is this the only series you talk about on the internet? I hope so, because I don't think you'd be able to handle a lot of more popular, more controversial things.

I'd say the best answer is to just respond in the exact same way, only positive instead of negative. Actually that could get pretty entertaining if enough people started doing it.

Exactly. I've seen people who pepper their argument with "In my opinion" in like every sentence and it just comes off as... submissive or something, or like they aren't comitted to what they're saying yet.
