Maybe covering their faces stops them from being incapacitated by the Operator?

I can't say for sure, since there's been many instances where the Operator doesn't incapacitate people despite being right there. (e.g. Entry #26)
But then again, I don't think I've ever even heard Hoody cough.

 		I think some people said he coughed in Entry 67, Although as a character he doesn't really speak, in fact, it seems masked people don't speak.

 		Just a thought, Maybe Alex and Oppy can only find hoody when he's not wearing the mask..? Notice in this video, he takes the mask off, then a minute later, Alex shows up. After he gets away, he instantly stops to put the mask back on, despite there being almost no chance of running into anyone else associated with the story. So, perhaps he removed the mask to draw Alex in on purpose?

Or they wanted to have a drink, and remember that time they tried to drink through the mask.

It didn't stop Alex from going in the tunnel after him, though.

Yeah but in entry 45 they run from the operator, they're still scared of him

Plus how would you explain the operator finding jay initially in entry 23...plus jay films himself in entry 26's intro after he moves places and the operator doesn't bother him, meanwhile if you assume he found him in entry 23 bc jay filmed himself in the bathroom he appeared very soon after. too many inconsistencies. jay films himself in the hotel in entry 57.5 but alex/the operator doesn't know where they are, there's a big flaw right there



I'm not saying it indefinitely protects them, or is the ONLY way that TO can track them. Just saying perhaps when you put your face on camera TO can sense that. And maybe TTA/hoody and masky realized this and decided hiding their faces would give them some amount of protection from him.

Was Alex going after him though, or was Alex after something else? He was going down there, but I don't know that he knows Hoody was there. Hoody said Alex wouldn't find him again, and the fact is that could have been a blind guess or a line of sight visual seeing Hoody enter. Alex can see Hoody fine with the mask on. Tracking him however... That's possibly a different story.

 		At 3:35 you can hear a feint whisper (doesn't sound like its part of the original footage, although because it is so low it could be indistinguishable) that says "I'm not afraid."

Can't hear it, although I can hear Hoody breathing at that point. Then ear rape right after from the camera being picked up.

 		I wonder why hoody kept looking outside... I doubt hoody constantly looks outside to look for alex, I think Alex was lured in on purpose, hence why he was smiling when he was attacked.

Maybe it was to show Tim and Jay where he was?

Or perhaps to make sure alex found him
