I saw him come on. I didn't try to talk to him in detail, I tried to go with the flow and talk like he was. Log:

I'm thinking it's like a black box: broadcasting a message and we intercept it when we get there by IMing the broadcaster. Our input clearly means nothing.

Comparing mine to Stark's, it looks like the sequence is the same, as the pattern of speech evolves. Cool.

I think we're watching HIP or something similar "learn" to talk.

Interesting possibility. Also, with the way this thing keeps playing with spelling, I wonder if "are you green" is maybe some reference to Sam Greene?

at which point shadowtalk1 went offline again.

SPEC: Shadowtalk is the AI (CAROL) that was mentioned in last night's chat. It it just starting to learn to interact with people (and at the rate it is learning, it won't be long before it passes the Turning test).

 		The weird thing about this is that a general natural learning AI has to get its input from somewhere. (see http://nicole.sourceforge.net or http://megahal.sourceforge.net) But shadowtalk (if it is the HIP project) is gaining new vocabulary, but not from us. It started in with the "curly gold hair" and "green knights" and mountains without us feeding it those terms.

And no mention of Mick Jagger at all.

This postulates to me that either he's getting vocabulary from some preset text to feed his vocabulary (which maybe we could find?), or he's talking to someone other than us and learning from them...the guides? The dead eyes? (edit): Unless he's learning from the internet itself, as Dale suggested last night. In that case, I wouldn't be surprised if he started out reading Gawain and the Green Knight...

 		Hmm, although, looking at the chat log from last night, it didn't seem like Wes or Dale thought shadowtalk was a bot. In fact, Wes specifically said he didn't think so when Dale asked him...

 		PHONE CALL from shadowtalk1
I just got a "blocked number" call to my phone during the period we're watching shadowtalk1.

When I picked up it was a deep harmonized voice with some string pad sounds playing as it spoke. A bit of a hiss sound, but Im on a cell phone.

Said "Grey. Grey Weather(s). Grey." and I said "HUGH!" and it hung up.

Of course, I should've said "I am Forbin!" Shocked

 		Shadowtalk1 just called my cellphone too. Unfortunately the voice was too soft for me to make out what it was saying. It sounded synthesized, like a machine voice would, though.
