just an interesting observation - 3, 2, 1 - the # of points on an object - triangles, lines, dots... Smile cool hehe

Yeah, I wonder if the team would have been more successful if they'd gone triangles, lines, dots instead of the other way around. On the other hand, maybe they are successful. If its a choice between bringing the Covenant to Earth, versus activating Halo and destroying the galaxy... bring on the Covies! We have Master Chief to kill 'em!

It suddenly occured to me, and I wondered why I hadn't seen it before. Very Happy

The seeker said 3, 2, 1 - triangles, lines, dots. But Jersey put in 1, 2, 3 - dots, lines, triangles (assuming he didn't mess it up and put in the wrong code). He did that because they figured that entering the code backwards would stop the countdown, rather than putting the same code in again.

Now there's two possibilities - either they were right and Jersey did good, and the burst was the better of two situations - it was a side-effect of the artifact switching off - or he did bad, and entering the code backwards triggered the artifact earlier than it would have otherwise gone off.

I guess we'll never know which was the case.

The Covenant never glassed Sigma Octanus IV. Listen to alt_burgandy.wav on recipe3.html and read Fall of Reach.

(novel spoilers)

Yeah, Sigma Octanus IV is where

I think people are forgetting that the Covenant didn't know where earth was until sometime during the period between Halo and Halo 2. It is sufficient to deduce that the artifact did give away Earth's location. Since, I've been led to believe, they skip over some outer colonies and head straight for Earth.

What I don't understand is how the artifact gets from Chawla base to New Mombasa where the artifact is believed to be at the beginning of what is the Halo 2 story. Unless I'm missing something. I'm guessing Standish and Co, move it to try and fool the Covenant.

Side note - Since the artifact was able to cause a temporal disturbance and seems to have great power, I'm putting my money on it being a forerunner artifact, the artifact the Convenant are after, and the artifact that is being held in New Mombasa. Somehow the Covenant find out where the artifact is being held. - End side note.

On the topic of Earth being glassed. If you watch the E3 trailer, go to the Halo2.com website or any other media source with a shot of Earth you'll see that the Covenant ARE glassing Earth, but only in small localised areas. Which leads me to believe that either they don't know exactly where the artifact is (but are confident enough to glass certain areas) or the non-glassed areas are somehow important.

What I'm uber-pumped about is that the Halo2.com website shows Australia to be an important location/continent, which is sweet. I hope some of the story plays out in Australia, it'll give me a chance to blast some Convenant on home turf. Woohoo!

I'm pretty sure ONI HQ is in Sydney (or it could be FLEETCOM, I forget).

My [SPEC]
Melissa made sure Team Jersey reactivated the artifact because she knew it would open a portal through time so that she could go back. That's how she got here in the first place, the first time the artifact was activated.

Therefore, the artifact is a time portal that has a side effect of disrutping comms.

Alternatively, the active artifact was maintaining a bridge between the future and our present - placing portions of Melissa/Durga in the two times. Team Jersey may have turned off the artifact, so that the bridge retracted and Melissa rejoined Durga in the future. Turning the artifact on or off could produce an EMP. Team Jersey clearly affected the artifact, whether they turned it off, or changed it to a different "on" state I have not seen any way to differentiate at this point.

I like the idea that they deactivated it because I trust Rani's instincts and because I like to think that these characters I have grown to love actually accomplished what they set out to do.

I also like the spec that the now inactive artifact is harder for the Covenant to detect, protecting Earth to some extent.

I don't think it's that clear, actually.

spoilers for First Strike (though not much that's not on the timelines at hbo):

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
We know that the Covies attacked Reach on Aug. 30th, and shortly thereafter, Lt. Wagner jumped back to Earth to deliver the news. We know the general public weren't informed until at least the 4th of Sep, when Wagner was debriefed by the UNSC Security Comittee. This gives us a fairly solid time reference for at least one part of the Axon Plot (chapter five, the PA announcement when Rani is talking to Nick at dinner). So, we know that Cortana intercepted Covie communications at some point during the TIME:DATE RECORD ANOMALY, which, from later events, was probably some time early September (the next reliable timestamp says 12th Sep., and was quite some time later), and at that point, they were already massing forces for the assault on Earth. Now, it's hard to be certain, due to the confused timeline of the book, and the lack of reliable date references in the Axon Plot, but personally, i don't think there was time enough for chapters six-eleven to occur, the artifact to be triggered, and the Covies to work out what it was, formulate an assault plan, and get the Unyielding Hierophant into position and start massing the fleet, all before Cortana picks up those transmissions.

Almost certain, i think. The descriptions of the markings - triangles, lines, and dots, match the descriptions of the markings on the artifact from Côte D'Azur (and i think there were similar markings on the Halo in the first game, too).

UNSC High Command is located in Sydney

this is precisely what I have been thinking for a while now... since I read First Strike...

I believe that the Covenant found the coordinates for Earth in much the same way that they found the coordinates for Reach... encoded in the rocks, or artifacts that were hidden on various planets.

They are searching for something, maybe their 'heaven' or promised land...

I get the feeling that Earth is much more than just a target to them.

So that's what the seeker meant by:

behold the truth
3 2 1

Triangles, lines, dots.
3 points, 2 points, 1 point.
3, 2, 1, behold.

But Jersey didn't input triangles, lines, dots. He put in dots, lines, triangles: 1, 2, 3. I wonder what would have happened if he did it the other way around, since 1,2,3 seemed to do what they assumed 3, 2, 1 would do.

This could have been multiple cross references.
Countdown: 3-2-1 !behold == when the artifact counts down, the truth will be revealed (device goes off).

Pass Code: T-L-D !behold == put the passcode in like that, and the truth will be revealed (device goes off).

I'll happily second that!

I don't know if you've seen them, but if you go to halo2.com.au you can get wallpapers (some are even animated) of Australian landmarks with Covenant ships over them and the familiar "red clouds effect" from the trailer. I was a bit upset that Adelaide wasn't there, but I've got the harbour bridge on my desktop at the moment.
