Last minute push for #1701?

Today there have been a couple of tweets from @DamonLindelof that said
Quote:
"Attention Trek fans: Enlist at areyouthe1701.com for the chance to be selected for something extremely awesome!"

Either there is something else at the end of this rainbow or he is being facetious about a $2 prize. Both are possibilities with Damon's sense of humor but by my estimate there are only about 1,300 entries so far and it ends tomorrow. Might just be trying to get more sign ups.

Only 1,300? Looks like I might have a chance then! Wish me luck!

Just wondering, where did you get that number? The contest ends in about 90 minutes and I'll be curious to see how many entries there are in total (both Vine and Instagram combined) at that point.

Rereading the rules it appears that Instagram and Vines entry is optional but I got the count from a utility that counted the #the1701 hashtags on Twitter. As you said we only have an hour to enter and then we have to wait to see if we are lucky enough to win that $2 prize! Smile

Is http://www.areyouthe1701.com not loading for anybody else? The site shows up just fine, but the spinner keeps spinning indefinitely. I was trying to see what time they're going to send emails out lol. Best of luck to all! Smile

Also, GuestUser17, what service did you use to count the hashtags? The best number I could get (from Twitter alone) is 1082.

Whatever the value of the prize you can win, it seems bad form to allow international sign ups that go on for months, then announce right at the end that it's a US and Canada only thing. I mean, why let us put in other counties when we signed up if we weren't going to get to play?

Technically (and as much as I hate it too, for various reasons) Canada is considered International. =P

Is the prize a ticket to see it 2 days early?

For a Star Trek Internet based competition featuring BBC Sherlock this 'ARG' has been a farce.

Two of the hottest long standing commodities of the intellectual property world generating millions of discussion pages across the net not receiving enough 'entries' into a site which has been sitting for 6 months?

It's pretty hard to type 'epic fail' convincingly for me however: Epic fail!

Needless to say, I'll be reserved in booking tickets before reviews come out and even at that I'll still hold off until 'fans' sell it to me.

The 1701 site loaded for me just fine and even has thebruce's Vine clip on the main page. Smile
I used the following link to get the numbers - http://topsy.com/s?q=%23the1701&type=tweet although I've never used it before so don't know its reliability.
Strangely I noticed that if I changed the search from just tweets to "everything" that the count went down to about 1,085. Once you take out all the promotional, repeat and international tweets I'm sure the number is a lot lower than that too. The rules do say they have the right to extend the deadline so who knows.

Latest clip has numbers that lead to website

The latest clip from Star Trek into Darkness on iTunes (http://trailers.apple.com/trailers/paramount/startrekintodarkness/) has the numbers 23 17 46 1 1 mentioned as a location during the conversation which leads to http://23174611.com. Currently it redirects to the UK movie site but anyone looking for a glimmer of a hope of an ARG should perhaps keep an eye on it.

wish we had a way to try mapping those coordinates, it could be a clue in that. The whois info for the 23174611.com site links to a company affiliated with arg's it seems.

Well that would be a first.. After scouring the trailers for hidden url's, now they just announce one in the films trailer dialogue?
More smoke and mirrors.. they seem to have anticipated we would try and link it to something so they linked it to the main ST page..

Move along now,.....

"these are not the droids you are looking for...."

considering the domain was established by a company that does ARG's and way back in January, I'm thinking they wound up deciding to just nix the ARG and forwarded things.
