 MarbleHornets Fanfiction??
Fanfiction in the MH universe..

My apologies if this has already been discussed at some point, but I did search the forums to see if a thread had already been made about this and I didn`t find anything. It may seem silly but I`m genuinely curious as I am a fanfiction writer (not for the Slenderverse, though).

I was browsing the website I normally go to to check out the fanfics I`ve been following on another fandom (fanfictionSPLATnet) and decided, for the heck of it, to check the Miscellaneous section (where I found hundreds of terrible wrestling fanfics, but that`s beside the point), and sure enough there was a category for "WebShows." Again, out of curiosity, I took a look, expecting to find lots of fangirls writing about famous YouTubers like PewDiePie and such.

I didn`t expect to see a lot of Marble Hornets fanfiction! (I also saw fics for other series' like EMH and TT, but this is the MH board so I won`t mention those.)

I`ll have to admit, a few of them were quite good. A few theories were unintentionally created through some fics, and I was quite surprised.

I know we have a MH Fan Art thread, but has anyone ever written or read any MH fanfiction?

I honestly feel like a lot of the authors were just playing around with their own endings according to their theories on the series thus far. However, like I said, I did see some interesting ones. One of them actually had Jay as a member of TTA, as many of you have theorized on here, and it was pretty interesting and quite accurate as far as adherence to the entires go.

Sorry if this is a bad thread, I`m a long-time lurker but new poster so I would say I`m a bit new to the boards posting-wise. I was just curious, though, whether MH is something any of you on here write or read, as I checked the site I mentioned and another and found some pretty good ones. Definitely impressed.

TL;DR: How do you feel about MH fanfiction? Something you would read/write, or something you wouldn`t touch with a ten-foot pole? As a writer, I`m just curious as I really didn`t know MH fanfics were a "thing."

I`m also pleased to say that not one I saw mentioned "Slender" or "Slenderman" or "eight pages" or anything like that. Rolling Eyes Like I said, I was pretty impressed.

I wouldn't touch them with a 10-foot pole. For some ungodly reason, females seem to always want to put Jay and Tim (and/or Alex) in a gay relationship with each other.

I agree completely. For some reason "fangirls" these days are totally obsessed with yaoi. They`ve even come up with ship names for them. Rolling Eyes

I do, however, like how some writers express their theories by writing them out. I found a few interesting ones.

You are right though about there being a lot that ship Jay/Tim or whoever. It seems to be an epidemic... I can`t go anywhere on a fanfic site without seeing pages & pages of yaoi. The ones that are decent, though, I`ve found quite enjoyable and I like seeing people play their theories out through fanfiction.

"Porn is a weak test for the success of participatory media – it's like tapping a mike and asking, "Is it on?" If you're not getting porn in your system, it doesn't work." (Ethan Zuckerman)

If someone's not writing slashfic, it's not a successful work. I'd say that the ridiculous amount of Jay/Tim shipping is an excellent sign, here: MH is reaching a larger audience. As much as the die-hards flinch at the idea of slash, there is going to be a film, and the slashfic boom predicts some amount of commercial success, as all of these squealing slashy fanits (I decline to attribute a particular gender to them, because not all slashers are female) are going to go see it, and probably drag their friends along.

That said, I neither read nor write MH fanfic, mostly because I don't have enough brainbleach.

Ztakk, I think the reasons that women like to read slashfiction are rather similar to the reasons men like to watch lesbian porn, and certainly no more "ungodly" -- two attractive-to-the-viewer people together are twice the attractive people: it's pretty, it's erotic, and it's less distracting than a hetero couple would be, because the viewer is not drawn in to mental comparisons with the character of matching gender: is he/she more attractive than I am, better endowed?

I definitely don't think that the women who produce and consume this variety of fanfic intend that it cast aspersions upon the perceived manliness of Jay, Tim, or Alex (or for that matter, Troy, Tim, or Joseph). It's not meant as an insult or a diminution; it's purely a recognition of how attractive women find these men and the characters they play.

I will say that I found it hilarious that Joseph had a meltdown (I think it was last summer?) when one of his Tumblr fans asked if he'd ever read any MH fanfic, and he searched online and found some, all right. I live with these people! You ought to be ashamed! was the response, or something very close to it. (This, of course, is the very same Joseph who absolutely cannot keep his hands out of Tim Sutton's hair whenever they are doing a panel at a con -- he wants to eat his cake and have it, too. He chastises the fans and at the same time eggs them on, quite the little mindfucker.) So, yes, hilarious not because I enjoy his distress, but because it seems so very deeply hypocritical.

What he should have been up in arms about was the fact that the fic he found was abominably written. He posted a snippet of it, and it was so, so, bad. So bad.

Which is why I won't have anything to do with MH slashfic -- I like the characters too much to see them subjected to idiotic writing.

That said, if ToTheTapes can point me toward some of this thoughtful, well-written, actual-plot-having fic, I'd be willing to give that a go.

And yes, I find the actors who portray those characters very attractive; I think you would be hard-pressed to find a female fan of MH who does not: they're funny, they're smart, and they're creative -- and damn cute.

No, the distracting part is the 90% of dick close-ups that accompany allegedly straight porn.

The problem I have with homoerotic pairings is that the majority of them are dumb as Hell. Joseph/Alex is clearly straight. Why even talk about how a pairing between him & Tim would be? It wouldn't work because he's obviously straight.

Was there buttsex involved? That might have been the difference.

I'm not saying that any of them are ugly, but this made me remember that I find Troy's eyes to be spaced really far apart.

Distracting to you. Your "bug" is my "feature."

Are you laboring under the delusion that lesbian porn involves actual lesbians?

Well, I had to go look it back up -- the salient point for me was the badness, not the act. It's here -- no apparent buttsex, just some voyeurism, and reading by Joseph's response, this must be about "Jay" and "Tim," since he's not objecting on his own behalf.

Edited to add:
Of course, there's also this, so tentacle porn seems to be more his thing...

Serum, Prophet or no, there are some things that even devoted acolytes will not do. You're going to have to find your own MH slash, hon.

Sounds to me like he deliberately picked the worst quote he could find.

No, but porn does not claim to retain the actress's actual persona. If an author is just going to reinvent the characters, why bother acting like they're the same people?

I'm also intending that as a commentary on shippers who seem to earnestly believe that being on screen together at any given point is absolute proof that 2 dudes are totally gay for each other, & sometimes that's not even necessary.

Everyone. With themselves.

Possibly. He may also have been faux-raging. Please do go visit his Tumblr; he gives rather mixed signals throughout.

Let me see if I've got this straight. Um. No. Rephrase: do I understand you clearly? You are a fan of a series that has an eldritch abomination, involves teleportation and (highly disputed) time-travel, features characters who have medical maladies that bear no particular resemblance to anything necessarily documented by science, and your gripe is that one or more of them might look over at each other and think, Hey. Is this it, essentially?

... I got nothin'.

No, my gripe is that they, in fact, will not do that, & any fanfiction that says they will is misrepresenting the characters, & would be better off just making its own.

I am fine with a pairing if I think there's a good basis for it.

Please do provide an example of such a pairing you would find acceptable. Any fandom you like, but to prove this point, het does not count.

There are fanfiction of the series. Bad news is that it's usually slash, mary sue characters dating the characters or just plain as god awful writing.

Same goes for any Slenderverse series (TT, EMH...).

If Yoruichi/Soi Fon does not become a thing, Tite Kubo is a lying bastard.

If you want men, at one point, Kurama/Hiei was planned to be a thing. I find this just as believable as how it ended up.

inb4 Tite Kubo is already a lying bastard.
