How to best join in?

Hello, I am new to ARG's with no experience and would like to know how to best join a going ARG. So far it all sounds interesting but whenever I look into the Trailheads I get the feeling that I can do nothing but watch as everyone else is solving the puzzle because I don't have any special software and am stuck in Germany without a car.

Maybe there is some sort of starting ARG, something simple just to get a feel for it.

Just join a newly starting ARG and you'll quickly get the hang of it. You don't need specialized software to do most things, and any software that is needed can always be downloaded for free (like Audacity, for example). The vast majority of puzzles can be solved through a mixture of heavy googling and using the puzzle solvers on this site: http://rumkin.com/tools/cipher/

Honestly, being in Germany isn't necessarily a hindrance. Many times things happen during ARGs that occur late at night in the US, and having someone awake at those hours can be useful, especially later on in games. And a car really isn't a necessity, most ARGs don't end up requiring people to travel at all.

I understand that some ARG's start with some mysterious email. Is there a way to "encourage" having one of those sent to me?

Play some games, be part of the community, have a twitter. Interact with characters, play nice, have fun.
Takes time to be established to get noticed by the PMs of good ARGs.

I jump in with 2 feet first and then just hope everything else falls into place.

I think sometimes ( IMO) its best to be like that. Everything goes so fast in here sometimes ( esp with regards to the puzzles) solved in seconds some of them.

Also dont feel shy or worried that people will mock your opinion. I hate when people do that to other players. Everyone i feel that contributes makes a good point and normally valid. Nine times outta ten if i see someone mock someone elses opinion or a pms effort il jump in with my 2 feet defense motions. lol. Wink

Dont forget to just have fun! Some of the games can be a good laugh. Others are very serious in tone.

Dont be afraid to speak out and most of all dont much take anything i say serious Razz no but really im scottish and i think on a par with germany we come across as quite curt sometimes, well at least i know i do. Wink Laughing
