[TRAILHEAD - DAEMONWORKS] The door_to....

So, I was perusing the friends list of my LiveJournal, and I found a post from one John Evans. The man's got MIT connections, and his father's been working on a demo model for uses of Interactive Voice Recognition.

The link leads to this: http://www.chaoseed.com/daemon/

Chaoseed's his site, and he has a few other games on there that aren't ARG-type. (Check out Phantasma, if you need your MUD-like room-crawling fix.) However, between the hidden text and my personal questioning, I'd have to say this one is.

Quote:

101 032 066 108 097 099 107 032 083
099 111 114 112 105 111 110

Mind humoring the man?

EDIT - Added tag for Game Name to make searching easier - ScarpeGrosse

Login time!

The site's been moved to daemon.chaoseed.com, and the main picture is now a link to a login/register page. Registration involves a username, unrecoverable password (if you forget these things, write 'em down), and optional e-mail.

Once you login, it says, "Login Successful - Unfortunately, DaemonWorks is down for maintenance. David I. Bickenstaff 2004"

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
View source reveals: xvxvbvyqbgugz

ROT-13 makes that kikioildothtm

Kiki oil, according to Google, is Castor oil, so: http://daemon.chaoseed.com/castor.htm

Reverse that and get: rabbitroads

The text in the SC on

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
http://daemon.chaoseed.com/castor.htm

<!-- gseehpmzm ... |clwvb PIPIPI -->

Rot18 to "ykwwzhere ... |udont HAHAHA"

Dunno about the first part (except maybe the "here")

And the fellow on that page is

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Howard Phillips Lovecraft

I'm stupid:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
The italicized text (poe) is the password to get thru the door, which brings us here:

http://daemon.chaoseed.com/archives.htm

Which has the Title:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):

1160173160208174

(broken up for forum format - originally one long string)

And the text:

o'er many a quaint and curious

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Viewing source has two more initials - J. -D

That *has* to be a Star Trek book sticking out of the shelf on the left side in the picture.

Book on the bottom shelf is a "Where's Waldo?" book.

The quote is from

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Poe's The Raven

Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered weak and weary,
Over many a quaint and curious volume of forgotten lore,
While I nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a tapping,
As of some one gently rapping, rapping at my chamber door.
`'Tis some visitor,' I muttered, `tapping at my chamber door -
Only this, and nothing more.'

So the line would finish with:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
volume of forgotten lore

The J. -D has me puzzled, why the dash?
Thought maybe 10-6 as in 10 Stanza 6th Line of the poem
(Then the bird said, `Nevermore.' )
No Go........

10th Line, 6th Word (sorrow) doesn't work either.

JD puts me in mind of Salinger.....

I think we really have to figure out what all the number strings mean.

The number string here breaks down into even sets of three, which makes me think of the ascii sets that we had beforehand - it's just that most of these result in the odd characters.

214 174 160 173 160 207 121 160 225 246 229 250 173 246 239 245 243 160 244 242 239 245 246 105 160 227 229 244 244 229 160 240 232 239 244 239 191 160 173 160 208 174

Alternately, we can go back to door_to.php and type in:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
lovecraft - H.P. Lovecraft being another of the authors pictured in the page before.

The result: http://daemon.chaoseed.com/4.htm

Or, better yet, since we have books0 appearing in the archives.htm page:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
http://daemon.chaoseed.com/daemon0.png - apparently, we have 0 versions of pictures, too.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):

It may or may not be red herring but the page title of http://daemon.chaoseed.com/4.htm is "SWHD"

That ROT1 is "TXIE" which anagrams to EXIT

....and as the background is just the image from

http://www.chaoseed.com/daemon/daemon1.png
(Smarty pants, think you're so clever)

repeated, it may be just that, an EXIT.

On a side note, I don't think this was there before:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
In the SC of archives:
xmiawvmzbp

ROTs to:
peasonerth

Figured out the title of castor.htm:

Again, we're working with the ascii table - but, first, we need to translate the letters into numbers.
yyt yzv zwq yyy zqq yzy zqs yyz

That's the title, separated into groups of three.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):

now, z=0, and work backwards (hint = when translating ascii to make it work out letters, the most common character is 1)

116 104 039 111 099 101 097 110

Answer = th'ocean

Also, wrong answers in door_to.php lead to http://daemon.chaoseed.com/notugg.htm - a simple photo, a couple of text strings, and a guy wearing Wrong-Way from Q-Bert on his chest.

The title of which (the picture) is where.gif. Maybe a puzzle, maybe just a file-name homage.
