Having literally just finished the first 2 books and now moving on to the third, i get the feeling that what we just witnessed is simple:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
The pattern 3>2>1 deactivates the artefact, which is highly likely to be another Covenant slipspace altering artefact. As he pressed 1>2>3, it re-did what it did first time- which is the EMP beam that scrambled Melissa. However, the repeat was the gate that allowed for the reunification process that happened.
Now, however, that means the timer has reset, but it IS still going... which i imagine we deal with in the game. 8/10 days to go (US/EU) til i find out the Tru7h... I hereby [SPEC] that it is counting until it fires again...

Except that we know McKaskill did 3-2-1 onboard the Apoc.

I'm not sure that we'll see any resolution to the story, personally. Every experienced storyteller knows that a good tale should leave you with more questions than answers. Some would say that there ARE no answers, only more questions.

Melissa made sure Team Jersey reactivated the artifact because she knew it would open a portal through time so that she could go back. That's how she got here in the first place, the first time the artifact was activated.
Therefore, the artifact is a time portal that has a side effect of disrutping comms.
I like it.
3-2-1 by McKaskill -> time portal opens, part of Melissa goes into past, crashes on ILB
1-2-3 by Jersey -> Melissa sucked back, time portal closes.
Curiosity killed the cat, satisfaction brought it back.
I wonder what ELSE this gizmo can do? (And I'm not giving up on Toasterspace.)

Just one thing about the ILB timeline:
I did some reasoning myself and came to the conclusion that ILB takes place this week between October 16th and October 28th, and that it started on August 7th - August 19th.
And since the Covenant knew about Earth since September 7th (at the latest), it would seem that they found Earths location either when the artifact was triggered for the first time or for some other reason altogether.
This is based on the announcement of Reachs defeat and the reference made about Reach being glassed "last month".

The only important question is this: can it make me a sandwhich?

Much MUCH better, thank you I've always wanted to be a sandwhich! Man if we could market that thing we'd make a fortune! An instant sandwhich poofer! What do you say, skyhawk, we'll be rich!
hehe

Originally I read the fall of reach and first strike. I skipped The Flood 'cause, well, I played the game. However, curiosity got the better of me and I picked it up. In it an elite in active camo (the light-bending guys) is thinking about the benefits of spying on the humans with this technology and mentions in passing that they used it to determine the location of Earth. Doh.
I propose that 1) covvies determined the location of earth sometime around the time that First Strike occurs and the artifact goes off sometime immediately prior to the conclusion of that book, which is why the prophet isn't too pissed about Chief's actions in that book. The covvies want to mass an even bigger fleet 'cause now one of their artifacts is on earth and they can ...ahem...kill 2 birds with one stone. . .ahem.
I also think it's pretty clear that basically all the events related to ILB occured while durga was fragmented (time-bent by the artifact) 'cause she basically goes nuts and screams all the stuff we saw on ILB; an AI's version of the BSOD.
Perhaps we'll get a denouement, perhaps not. All in all, WHAT a ride. Simply a fantastic treat for all of us and we have ~4h of audio treats PLUS H2 demo for the geographically fortunate. Awsome.

I agree with Machiavelli. I thought HALO was resolved, until I saw the Monitor after the credits. That left me with a few questions. I think this will be no different. I've always heard it said that HALO 2 would have a lot of plot twists.

Nah. The one thing that disproves this is that we sent Durga the Herzog audio files before that.

I think he means that everything "in-game" takes place from Durga's crash onto Jersey's machine (where I assume she had just split with Melissa), until Melissa reintegrates during the "broadcast."

if it was Covie, a temporal bomb maybe?
if it was Forerunner...... Halo activator?
My roommate and my bf think that it's 343 Guilty Spark. Through the audios, obviously the "timer" was using Durga's voice to speak for itself. Perhaps he lost his voice and used Durga's. 343 Guilty Spark is a Monitor for a Halo installation, whom is in charge of certain tasks and operations. And he is also Forerunner technology.
The only part that I disagree with them is the "triangles, lines, dots" running along its sides "like a tire".

Except that durga only "goes nuts and screams all the stuff we saw on ILB" at the end of yesterday's transmission.
