[OT]New Operator vs. Old
A look at how the MH used to portray TO and how they do it now.

After season 1 ended, Joseph and Troy mentioned in an interview that they were really happy with how their operator turned out in the final entry of season 1. Since then, the operator has always had this look:

Although it sure looks nice, there is something I noticed ever since they used this technique. The Operator. Never. Moves. Seriously, we have only seen him just stand there ever since they used this. It makes sense considering its no actual human being playing The Operator though.

Although TO looks much nicer this way, I, for one, would find it refreshing to see TO actually move his muscles for once (Yes, he does move his arms into an open hug like state at the end of season 2 but that deems negligible to the amount of movement present in all of season 1). For example, this is still one of my favorite moments:

What are your thoughts? Does it bother you as much as me?

I'm assuming it's because walking as the operator would look goofy. They got away with it in entry 14 because of the angle and 480p. In newer entries, they use the technique of panning away from it, moving it closer, and then filming it up close (entry 40, 60, 64)

Yeah, the Operator would look goofy if it moved around too much. It's creepy as an anomaly that plays off of the Uncanny Valley phenomenon, but it's very much not a mobile threat. Not in the traditional sense, anyway. It moves, we just either can't see or comprehend how it moves, and that's the way it should be.

Uncanny Valley? What is that?

Anyway, i kinda got, not ''dissapointed'' but weird about TO appereance in the last entry, he seemed goofy to me, i think the best TO entry was #51, #52 and the one on the tunnel.

I'm glad they took away the walking and just gave him teleporting powers or whatever

This isn't an exact definition or anything but it's the idea that the closer something gets to looking human without actually being human, the more uncomfortable a person gets looking at it, the more unsettling it is.

IMO the Operator's movement in 1, 6, 26, and 64 has all been very effectively creepy. I don't think it's the type of movement that matters as much as the framing and atmosphere. Sometimes stillness works very well (12, 40, 46) and other times it just looks like a puppet (43, 56, 70). Other times movement looks awful too (4).

This graph is a good reference:

I dunno, I always thought he looked pretty goofy in Entry 14.

However, it's a little disappointing that every one of his appearances is exactly the same nowadays.

1) Somebody is wandering around
2) They hear a noise and turn around
3) The Operator is standing there like a scarecrow
4) They either run away, fall to the ground coughing, or both
5) Nobody speaks of the occurrence ever again

If I were the film major here (and I'm not), I'd try to find a good medium between humanlike motion and complete stillness.

In fact, for Slenderman, I'd probably use stopmotion wherever possible. That can be difficult to do with an active background though, so maybe I'd use a greenscreen for the "far away" shots.

I don't know, stopmotion just fits the Operator/Slenderman perfectly. Have you guys seen "Mama"? The ghost in that movie looks a little stupid on its own, but the way it moves is one of the most unsettling things I've ever witnessed. Someone needs to make Slenderman move like THAT.

Tribe Twelve has done it.

Not gonna link it straight here cause it's spoilers, AND a joke made by some fan, but you still see the stop motion.

Was that taken from an episode of Marble Hornets? I've never seen the Slender Man with tentacles, before.

You've never watched the OTHER big Slenderman mythos web serie, Serum? Slenderman had tentacles in one of the original picture, so that's where it comes from.

There's also been debates about whether or not there is a tentacle in Entry #1

Can't remember if everymanHybrid and dark harvest use tentacles.

Good lord, I hate how the quote and edit buttons are reversed on this forum.

I'm thinking that Slender: The Eight Pages has had some influence on how the MH crew has decided to portray the Operator recently. This is especially obvious in entry 70; the static blip when he teleports borrows very much from S:TEP.

The most recent appearance of the Operator also resembles the S:TEP model a lot--which, incidentally, looks pretty awful, sort of like Gumby.
