[NEW SITE] Possible tools for future args? So, I'm waaay new to this. ARGs, I mean. Hopefully, this will make sense to others cause I'm not sure it does for me yet.
I've created a site called agentdisco.com . Actually, I created some of the pages and all the backend code.. database and server-side scripts. I'm a software engineer and I work for one of those large consumer electronics retailers with the yellow tag logo. lol.. But occassionally I work some side gigs for fun. And I like to game and create games.. mods mostly, but even the nerdy 3d engine stuff.
Anyway, I bring up all this because I was asked if I'd be interested in creating a spy game by a guy named "disco". He contacted me thru my developer's page on BeyondUnreal.com . (Beyond Unreal is a mod community for Unreal Tournament.) I figured he wanted to create some sort of spy mod for UT.
Instead, disco wanted me to create web tools for his blog. These tools would allow "agents" of his site to send and receive missions to each other and track their progress. Moreover, he wanted the tools to be wap-enabled so agents could be mobile in the field.
I email'd the guy and told him that this was a very large project that I normally would get paid to do. He wrote me back and told me this outlandish story about how he's a real spy and there were others like him and they meet each other to complete missions for their clients and all their missions end in a party and on and on and on..
Roight. So I don't write the guy back again for a while thinking he's jacked. But I do check out his blog. And there I find his stories about the missions he's been on. I show this to a buddy of mine and he tells me about "alternate reality gaming". I write disco back and tell him I'm interested. (Side note: when a developer tells you "this is a very large project" he's just hedging his hourly bill rate. ) And a couple months later I have the tools built.
So, I'm not sure if this is an ARG or not, but it's pretty cool. I've been on some simple missions where I've met friends at a bar and everyone got their missions briefs SMS'd to their cell phones. Pretty cool. We text message each other securely (disco acts as a go between thru the site) and then we are awarded "trust" for completing the missions. I'm still not sure if disco is gaming or whatever but I find myself reading his posts all the time.
So am I playing an ARG or is it just a mobile game or something else? This is so weird because I don't even know what I've created!

Thats very interesting. I think it just might be some guy who wants to play spies with some friends. He says he's a real spy? I don't think they can say that without having to kill you or something.

I guess it's kind of an ARG..
In a way that it creates an interesting alternate reality for you. It's not a traditional ARG in the way that it's not played online by many players, but an ARG nonetheless.

Re: It looks pretty cool, but I don't think they have it in my area. Judging by the 'Locations' page, they're in FL, IL and MN.....sadly. Who knows? Maybe they'll expand!

Absolutely.. the reason there are so many Minnesotans is because of me and my friends.

The locations reflect the current agents. As new agents join from different cities, new locations are created. Your first mission is usually to secure a safe haven for your base of operations. A place where agents can meet up before and after missions are completed.

I'm starting to see why they're called "ARGs"... it's not because it's short for "Alternate Reality Game". It's because that's the phrase you continually want to yell while playing them.

Oh man.. here it comes...
"Is it true? Is Mr. Durden building an army?"
This is totally sweet. I'm definitely going to keep tabs on this blog. Thanks for posting, appleweed.

Would this possibly be going to travel 'across the pond'?
Being in the UK sure can be a pain.
