For the record: marble (the rock) is actually metamorphosed limestone, usually containing recrystallized calcite or dolomite.

The word "marble" is ultimately derived from the Greek word μάρμαρος, which means "shiny rock" (from the verb μαρμαίρω, "to sparkle").

Marbles (the toy) have been made of marble, alabaster, clay, agate, glass, and plastic among other materials.

Well, the hornet in question was decidedly glass.

A bit of pre-Entry #71 nonsense.

A request for assistance

I know we have some very savvy sound-engineer types on this board (I've seen what you can do with those spectrograms), so I'm putting out a general request for assistance with a project I'm working on, MH-fanartwise.

I need to be able to strip the vocal tracks off an existing song (I have permission to do this) so that I can lay down my sweet filk lyrics over it and cause a YouTube sensation, making myself Internet-famous in the process. Or, ya know, maybe just amusing the denizens of unFiction...

You may assume for the purposes of this exercise that
    a) I have access to any software and equipment that I may need, but that

    b) I have no fucking clue what I'm doing, technologically -- i.e., you'll need to use lots of small words. (I'm the artist, okay?!)

So, if this sounds like something you'd be interested in doing -- and really, why wouldn't you be? what could go wrong? -- shoot me a PM. Thanks!

Updated: Nevermind. Turns out I'm an idiot. <== And thank you to those of you who already knew that fact in other contexts and resist(ed) the urge to point it out to me.

Jonathan Coulton's Christmas Is Interesting. (It's cc Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike, so I think this is covered, since I'm only doing it for the lulz.)

To be honest I didn't even know it was possible to strip different parts of the song away (like separating music from the words from the music)

Just remember that anything you create must also be released under a CC-BY-NC-SA license. That's what the "Share Alike" part means. Smile
(Disclaimer: I am a huge proponent of Creative Commons.)

I'm not really good at it myself, but generally it involves filtering out specific frequency bands.

Absolutely. Very Happy I fully expect and encourage parodies of my parody to exist by the end of the week after I post it, tops.

I love me some Creative Commons, and I'm especially pleased that there are artists out there like JoCo who prove that you can use it and still make a living.

Well, it is officially Worse Than I Thought -- I am beyond hopelessly technologically-impaired if I can't even find a damn karaoke song! *facepalm*

Thanks, paladin. Smile
