are they further on in the book?

Between the book and the accompanying evidence, you will eventually get enough information to deduce everyone's access code. Is anyone in particular giving you trouble?

Emma's Code

If you go to doubletalkwireless.com, you can access Emma's private site. However, you have to answer a security question.

SPOILER WARNING:
Q: What is 600K in a frame?
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
A: In page 22 of the book, when Cathy goes to viktor's house, she finds a chagall painting titled cemetery gates which was in a private collection and had been sold for 600k or so. The answer to the question is Cemetery gates.

EDIT: Spoiler tags added -xnbomb

It leads to an archive where you can see all of the stuff from the evidence packet, as well as some new information that Emma found.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
As Emma is the one that setup the site, the answer is the name of the painting that she believes is worth $600k, which is the same as the name of the painting that is hanging on Victor's wall.

I'm not giving the exact name to force everyone who hasn't picked up the book yet to go buy it. You won't be disappointed Very Happy

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
The name of the picture is cemtery gates.

Missing the Hook

I'm with the other people on the forum who don't quite get the hook of this game. The novel (which I just read) is complete unto itself. It doesn't leave you with any big questions that you feel compelled to answer via game play and solving puzzles. Perhaps that's a narrow way to view gaming on my part, but if they had stopped the story at Cathy's kidnapping, I'd have been willing to dig through clues to help find her. With no compelling reason to play, I don't feel much like jumping through the hoops to figure out access codes and so forth.

Don't get me wrong: the book is very nicely done and I think Stewart et al did a great job with the story. I just can't figure out what the hook is that would get someone to go through the game collateral (also well done) and try to solve anything. Even "Save My Husband," which was an abysmal failure on many fronts, did create a great deal of suspense, to its credit.

I'm also a bit disappointed to find that the book was never really lost in the story. The connection between the game world and the real world is the book, but the book itself doesn't fit in either world.

Anyway, just my two cents for those who are also confused.

I think that Cathy's Book used the websites, phone numbers, and clues packet as almost an 'extended reality' to the book itself. The core story is in the book itself, hence why it is so accessible.

There are any number of posts that have the answer to the riddle 'What is 600k in a frame?' You just have to Search for them.

No more Cover Girl promotion

According to The New York Times, the paperback version of Cathy's Book will no longer contain those three references to CoverGirl products. Apparently the authors were somewhat disturbed that the product-placement controversy tended to eclipse little things like, oh, the story.

Sequel

By the way...

According to Sean Stewart's site, the sequel is entitled Cathy's Key and is scheduled for release this May.

Amazon has a page on which you can pre-order the book. It also has a very nice image of the cover.

Which has a new phone number.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
(650) 266-8202

Which works.

Hey, does anyone else think that sounds a little like Olivia Burnette, a.k.a. Rani Sobek?

The Amazon UK site for the book also has a synopsis:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
When the laboratory technicians working for Ancestor Lu discover the key to the immortality genetic structure, Victor names it the 'Cathy Key' in honour of his quest to make Cathy immortal. Ancestor Lu humors him. But when events go fatally wrong and a Fortune Teller's grim prophecy comes true, soon a homicide investigation is underway and Cathy, once again, is a little too close for comfort...

Cathy's Key is a brilliantly involved mystery thriller, a love story and an entirely interactive experience with further developments to the websites and phone numbers and online activity which makes this package so unique and special.

It also has an image of the cover, which contains an email address.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):

 cathy's book and evidence

ok. the book was great but the evidence wuz basically a waste because it wasnt like the book stopped as a mystery and you had to figure the rest out. it wuz just tht you found some access codes and listened to messages.woohoo. there is a good idea to it but it needs to be better. i hope cathy's key is better evidence wise. but the book wuz good.

In no way to reprise my earlier rant on this subject, but yea!
