Juxta raises a hand

I have a suggestion for what you could do with them...

Firstly, kindly stop crossposting this bewildering inanity across multiple forums, if people wish to participate, they'll read it here.

Secondly, just...wow...words really do fail me. I thought that the initial idea was just bizarre, and fairly pointless...

Quote:
"Mr. Mind Candy, we have a delivery for you here of fourty seven thousand, two hundred and seventeen paper cranes..."

"...."

"Just sign here."

"A whole skip full of Dubya Tee Eff? Did someone slip something into my coffee this morning or what? I've gotta cut back on the Smarties, really..."

But hey, it's your time and resources to do with as you see fit, so I kept quiet. Now it's being hijacked into something else entirely...I...just...well...lawks. And possibly also gadzooks. Really. Congratulations. You've managed to leave me speechless. I'm going to go and lie down for a while now, I may post later. Probably to respond to the accusations of my "evilness".

J

I have a suggestion as to what you can do with your opinions...

I only cross posted because there was already talk in those threads about some kind of memorial for Anna, which this is, so it was entirely relevant.

Secondly, if you don't want to join in, don't. If you think it's stupid then fine. But let people get on with having their fun please without being so negative please? 'If you can't say anything nice, then don't say it at all'.

Thank you to everyone else who has pledged their efforts though

rach =)

Crossposting - for a player with 300+ posts, which implies that you do actually visit these forums occasionally, you seem to have missed the little box, it's a the top left of the page with a link to "Guidelines" (I've even linkied it for you, because, well, I do try to help out those less fortunate occasionally Smile ). The bit you might want to pay attention to in particular is this one:

Quote:
Why shouldn't I just post whatever I want on the first thread I see? (or why do I keep getting told I'm posting in the wrong place?)

The key to being an effective team is to stay organized. No one wants to waste their time on a puzzle that has already been solved in another thread. Nor does anyone want to read about the same update 23 times in different threads.

It's pretty clear:- repeating the same post, in three threads, is just unnecessary.

As to my personal opinions on the topic, well, they're just that. I must apologise for the lack of clarity in my initial post, as you seem not to have grasped my point. Let me re-iterate, as you also seem to have taken some great offense here. Bless.

Initial idea. Create a multitude of paper cranes. Send them, unsolicited, to Mind Candy. Reason - unknown.

I didn't post, because frankly, whilst a lot of people thought in a similar fashion to the way I did - "What an absolute waste of time and effort. There is no reason for doing this, so...um...just how desperate are you for attention?" - you're absolutely right. If you want to do that, or juggle weasels, or eat 15 bars of lard in ten minutes - you go ahead and do it! Knock yourselves out!

However, now, something has occurred in-game. Yes, note, in-game (I'll come back to that). A character has been killed off. An excellent plot move, one which Mind Candy are to be applauded for. They've successfully repeated a similar act which they hit us with before - with Monica Grand's murder recording. That particular plot device worked exceptionally well - personally, I still get goosebumps listening to it.

Killing Anna off, a character who we have even more of a heavy emotional investment in, hits even harder, and with the scope of the game growing in the interim, in a much more widespread fashion. When I read it, it generated a very strong emotional reaction, which is exactly what it was intended to do. From the point of view of the game, you can read my unedited, genuine, real reaction here.

As I stated earlier however, this is an in-game character. To immediately jump upon this plot development, (which when this whole crane malarkey started, was entirely unthinkable) and try to tack Anna's death onto it, to add an air of justification to it just smacks of it having been even more pointless in the first place.

If, on the other hand, you really can't (or don't want to) separate in-game/out-of-game, then fine...if you really want to go down this route, then carry on with your suspension of disbelief. When a wife, mother and friend to many people is brutally murdered, in the pursuit of a goal which we ourselves have desperately been following too, then heck, nothing says how you feel like...a...bunch...of...folded....paper. Which we're not even sending to Perplex City. We're sending to Mind Candy instead. Again though, have fun with that, if you want to, then go for it.

However, what I am really quite disturbed about is neither of these things, although the very fact that they seem quite so inane merely serves to compound the issue.

On July 7th 2005, 52 people lost their lives, and hundreds more were injured, when a number of explosive devices were set off on London Tube trains. A few short weeks ago, most of the UK observed a minute silence, to show respect and to honour those involved.

On September 11th, 2001, over 3,000 people died, in a series of attacks in the United States, on the anniversary of that day, many people, the world over, observe a minute silence, to show respect and to honour those involved.

On November 11th, every year, it is customary in many nations, to observe a full two minute silence, to remember the dead of both the First and Second World Wars.

I would, with all due respect, suggest that to hold such a silence for a fictional character, rather cheapens and demeans something which is usually reserved for solemn moments of remembrance, and respect.

I don't appreciate this.

Both Juxta and spugsmeistress have their opinions, which they have made clear here. They are free to continue this conversation in PMs.

Those of you still interested in this project, do move on. Those of you not interested in this project, feel free to PM me about it if you really feel the need to be heard. Bear in mind, however, that I prolly won't share your advice.

This thread has a purpose, and I thank you for sticking to it.

Firstly, I would like to say that Juxta represents the views of a few people I have spoken to. Just because they haven't made it public knowledge, it does not mean he is the only one with an opinion.

Frankly, a minutes silence is completely inappropriate. Did we all have a minutes silence when Dumbledore got killed? No, because it was inappropriate thing to do, and the rest of the World would of been in uproar at such disrepect for a time we reserve to pay our genuine remorse.

I am not arguing that Anna's death isn't a sad ocassion, but you all have to remember, this is a game. Some things are just not appropriate.

And Bookmore, there was no "drama" in anyones post, just pure opinion. If someone feels strongly about something, why can't they speak their voice?

And remember everyones, posts on UF do not get deleted. So it's no good shouting over a PM to fix it and make it all better, at most, the thread will be locked. Pointless in this case, as this subject has been crossposted everywhere.

poor mac :( i was shocked too.

i'd just like to add that the wave4 launch party will technically be an In Game event (or at least I assume it will) so I don't think our suspension of disbelief would be out of place there, or at the SF event either for that matter.

for the record, this 1 minute silence thing wasn't something that was decided on by this thread or even suggested by any of us, it was something mentioned in syz as that might be happening so please feel free to take your outrage about that elsewhere.

remind me not to send any of you lot any unsolicited presents ever - personally i wouldnt have anything against receiving a load of cranes in the post. we had a 1000 of them donated to the bridgewater hall by a craft workshop at chinese new year once while i worked there - they didn't seem to think they were spam, we exhibited them in the foyer porch and everyone remarked that they looked so beautiful they have stayed there ever since. so i really can't see whats so harmful about sending these to [TINAG] anna's family and friends/ [TIAG] mind candy either way.

as for any more personal attacks or patronising comments, i agree with Book - please direct them to me in PM (on the forum ta, not in IRC, for clarification), tis far easier to ignore them there.

rach =)

Dearest Spuggy,
I'll be brief, and try to be as clear as I can for you.

Suspension of disbelief - I'm not going to repeat what I've already said, regarding my own thoughts on the current in-game events. Suffice to say, read the linked post and you get my opinion. Read the previous post and you get my "out-of-game" thoughts on it. I have also not referred to the San Francisco event at any point in my posts, so I'm unsure why you're attempting to confuse the issue further - do try and keep on topic, no matter how weak your argument.

As I also said, if you can't, or don't want to separate the two, then feel free not to! However, if I fall/get pushed under a bus tomorrow - don't bother sending cranes to the funeral. Smile

As far as the cranes "being harmful" - again, that's not something which I have said anywhere. I freely admit to not "getting it", and have yet to see any stated "reason" for sending them initially. Now of course, you've successfully hijacked the project and made it "All about Anna". Again, if you want to do that, and evidently, you're not the only person, then please feel free to do so. But don't put words into my mouth, that's a trifle rude.

Now, onto the crux of the matter, as far as "When/Where/How/Who" the "One minute silence" issue was "decided", I really don't care. It's offensive, whoever came up with it. Perhaps they were ill-advised, and I'm sure that they didn't intend it to be, but it is still quite demeaning.

Also, the first that I knew about it, was when you spammed three threads across these forums with this wonderful idea. But, given the rapid speed with which you are now trying to distance yourself from the original idea, I'm quite willing to believe that it wasn't you who came up with it, and you just happened to be the person who decided broadcast it. To re-iterate however, I don't care who it was. Neither do I recall being rude or patronising on this topic - again, I would urge you not to try and divert attention away from the real subject here.

Finally, as far as "directing things to you in PM" - well, you seem utterly unable to do likewise, and I'm all for keeping this forum "open and honest" - these are public discussion forums, and I'm afraid that just because my opinion happens to differ from yours, doesn't mean that I have to sit here and listen, without recourse to make a response.

Feel free to drop me a PM however, if you feel up to it. I'm more than pleased to hold a lively debate on any topic you see fit.

Smile

J

To save further arguments, I'll be the one to stick the "wishful thinking" comment in Wink
