size-to-power I'm not sure about, but their claim is that the efficiency is around 400% (i'm going from memory here, so all numbers are approx.)

what matters for cars, cell phones, and everything, really, is the power/weight ratio, so this really could be not-so-awesome. We'll see, I guess.

ARG?

Excuse me for my ignorance, but what does ARG mean or stand for?

It stands for Alternate Reality Game/Gaming. Basically, it's a sort of game that plays out like a live story and uses a variety of media to do so. You can learn more about them at wikipedia (more about the who/what/when/where than the how) or the arg-quickstart guide* (more about the how and less about the who/what/when/where). They're really quite cool and interesting, hope you decide to check it all out Smile

*disclaimer: I wrote it.

(edit - or what DetroitLegend said)

Steornwatch.com audio interview

Listening to the Steornwatch.com audio interview has really affected my skepticism regarding whether this is some sort of "game" or "story". It has all the elements, and some can't be explained away (for instance, the weird website shenanigans - their site is simple enough that it shouldn't have changed from one minute to the next unless the site admin was watching us discuss it or kept a constant eye on the server logs). Buuuuut...

Sean's discussion is reasonably practical, and does something different than the web site. Steorn.net builds up this mystery, and has a vibe that just screams "creative suspense". Mr Steorn (heh) tries pretty hard to burst that with his comments that he isn't interested in having anyone believe them before the work is examined.

Part of it was his story about the blogger showing up at his place. While I haven't seen these pictures the blogger was supposed to have taken (and I think it's quite an assumption he makes that it IS a blogger and not some other fan)... I think he rang true right there, for whatever reason.

I'm expecting this story to dry up for awhile, unless Steorn fans the flames with something further.

Those of you who've listened to the audio clip - what do you think?

I've heard the audio clip, I was in on the live chat session and I've seen the Fox video. I agree there is lots of weird stuff happening but they seem too sincere to be making this into a game. I know we're not talking about a cure for cancer etc but I think they've attracted too much attention (more than previous free energy devices have) to come out and say, "ha ha, only kidding". The backlash would be to great now.

On the power/weight/size issue I think anything we come up with now would be pure guesswork. Steorn have openly said that they have never tested the actual output of this machine. Aparently it's not their business to hook it up to even something as simple as a bulb. That said, they do mention that they plan to release some products, the idea of which goes against everything they've said up to now...

I heard some of the call, was in on the live chat, and watched the video.
As I said before I don't believe this to be an ARG, but I firmly believe it is Screwy cause there are too many dots that don't connect for me. I just can't figure out why? What purpose is being served by this?
If Sean is an actor, give him the oscar. He is very convinced of what he is saying over, and over, and over again.
I wanna know why he was sitting in front of the TV in their breakroom for the interview?

As i've said in the chat rooms, I can beleive a "Co-efficent of Performance" (COP) of 400% but an efficiency of 400% I am (rightfuly I think and in good academic company) highly dubious about.

If it was just a mistake and they mean COP of 400%....but i still think its a hoax bacause any engineer thats done slightly more than intoduction to thermodynamics should know the differance.

I say "Hoax". "Hoax" I say. Say I "Hoax".

I've been staring at Steorn's header graphics for a week now, and thought I'd share these musings:

On the About page is a photograph of carved spirals (header_newgrange.jpg). This is the very large stone found at the entrance to Newgrange, also called Uaimh na Gréine (The Cave of the Sun), once the home of The Dagda, the Irish All Father. I list this first, because this is the one that set me on this line of thinking.

On the Home page is a cactus with triangular leaves set in a spiral pattern among small stones (header_cactus.jpg). Among Newgrange's petroglyphs is found the famous triple spiral. (And as an aside, there is a mixed drink known as an Irish Cactus, Irish cream and tequila.)

The News and Press Area pages feature water (header_water.jpg and header_water2.jpg). The Dagda's Cauldron of Plenty is often associated with the sea itself, and Newgrange is not so far from the eastern coast. The Dagda has further associations with water, such as seducing the water spirit Boann, by whom he fathered Angus Og, who dispossessed the Dagda of Newgrange.

The Forum page features handprints in sand (header_hands.jpg). Sand was used in the construction of Newgrange, and this could be a further coastal reference. Handprints are not uncommon petroglyphs, but I can't say if any exist at Newgrange.

The Our Technology page features a cross-section of a chambered nautilus shell (header_ip.jpg). Again, there is a sea reference, as well as a spiral, and a further reference to chambers. The seashell does figure into Irish myth, but I don't know of any stories offhand that relate directly to the Dagda or to Newgrange.

The Downloads page features three people in an interior in which we find a column and concentric cirlces (header_people.jpg). I haven't been able to place this interior, but the concentric circles do relate to petroglyphs at Newgrange, and the wall of this interior is decorated. The three people also suggest the triple aspect found in the Newgrange spirals.

The Contact page features the cross-section of a log (header_log.jpg). The Dagda was said to wield a club with such power that he could slay nine men in a single blow, and then restore them to life. I have seen depictions of his club that resembled a massive log. And again, we have concentric circles, not unlike images found at Newgrange.

The Register page features an honeycomb (header_register.jpg), while the Error page features acorns (header_downloads.jpg). Honey and acorns, I'm told, are left as offerings to the Dagda. What's more, the Dagda is said in some myths to have been born from an acorn, and the Dagda's son Cermait is also known as Honey-Mouth. Cermait's birthplace was Newgrange.

Granted, I may have done nothing more with this than expose the site designer's cleverness, or expose mine own obsession with the Steorn mystery, but I thought I'd put this out for consideration.

The Dagda post above was fascinating (thanks for sharing those musings) and I looked a little further into both the mythology of Dagda and the origins of Newgrange.

I should warn that I tend to operate on wishful thinking and I'm really hoping this is an ARG for Halo 3. So all my following observations/speculations are colored by that hope and may not be trustworthy. (I have a sneaking fear that if I could use the articles I found to demonstrate how this is an ARG for Lost or Cheerios if that's what I was looking for).

That aside, aside:

The Dagda was the ruler of the Tuatha de Danann who were essentially the race in Ireland before the Celts arrived. For those of us playing with semantics and hoping for a Halo 3 ARG, that makes the Tuatha Irish forerunners.

According to the wikipedia article on Newgrange, when it was uncovered (after having been lost/buried for a long time), it was surrounded by the remains of a massive stone circle:

Quote:
Formerly the mound was encircled by an outer ring of immense standing stones, of which there are twelve of a possible thirty seven remaining. However, it seems that the stone circle which encircled Newgrange are not contemporary with the monument itself but was placed there some 1,000 years later in the Bronze Age.

Okay, that's less than I thought I had - semantic forerunners and an artifact that looks like a halo - but I thought it interesting and worth appending to L'Maut's post.

I have to admit though, that if it IS an ARG (and I'm becoming less convinced as time goes by) it certainly does not seem to be going anywhere at the moment. I feel like I'm standing outside a wall saying "Wow, I really wish there were a secret door here with all sorts of tricky lock mechanisms for us to pick."

The nautilus reference is likely nothing more than an homage to the "standard" Bhaskara's (overbalanced) wheel perpetual motion design.

I tend to be the same way when faced with things that should make sense but don't. I pick them apart and over-analyse them, thinking there must be something in it all to which I can relate, but as I remind myself often, the universe is not obligated to conform to my expectations of it.

That Steorn is in Dublin which is so close to Newgrange may be happenstance. The connection in the website design, if it exists at all, could be designer's play. As was pointed out earlier in this thread, the header graphics do all reflect phi.

Golden

One one two, three five eight
Sounds so simple, nothing great
Thirteen, twenty-one, thirty-four
The hinges creak on an opening door
A repeating patter of the masters hand
Signing his work, the universal plan
Learn to look, the pattern's plain to see
In the smile you flash, the dance of the honeybee
In the spirals of the pine cone and little acorn cap
In spiral arm galaxies and the ocean's wave whitecap
In the swirl of the seashell, the air vortex of a wing
The hurricane's eye and a thousand unseen things
Welcome to the mystery of the Greek letter phi
The measurement of beauty to the human eye
The golden ratio, one point six one eight
One, One, Two; Three, Five Eight

Sean McCarthy was interviewed on Fox News... I think the whole ARG angle can now be safely disqualified, don't you think?
