[PUZZLE/PARTIAL SOLVE] The Packages / Grids

I thought it would be useful to have a thread about these puzzles since we're still trying to figure what they all mean in the context of the game.

First, though -- I got one!!!

I'll attach photos below, but the creature I got was this yeti figure (that file name indicates it's probably a GI Joe figure), and the puzzle is new.

To summarize, players and other influential unforumers have been receiving packages "courtesy of the Monster Hunter Club," containing a monster action figure and a puzzle. These creatures appear to be the missing collection of Monster Hunter Club founder, Derek.

Here are the packages received so far (I'm using the number under the circled space to identify each puzzle):

* These two are postings on the MHC forums, and appear to be from in-game characters.

We're still not sure how to "solve" these, but based on a hint from castledweller, ALISDAIRPARK and danteIL have found ways to connect each number pair in non-crossing lines.

It looks like if we come with a word or phrase as the solve for each puzzle, we can fill in the blank lines and put the resulting circled letters in the order indicated by the number underneath.

Oh, and the packages are all from Magnolia Pictures, with a New York address. They all have used these cool hologram stamps, and mine says it was processed through Clinton, NJ.

I've added Rowan's puzzle to the file and colored the paths connecting the numbers on the last two grids. I wonder what it means that now we're starting to get variation in the numbers...

EDIT: I changed the file to add Cross' puzzle, below. Plus I tried to extract out the readable words from each puzzle, which I put in the margin.

Just found a package on my doorstep with a mummy and a new puzzle inside. The puzzle has no 7s and can easily be solved. See attached excel sheet for the solution.

Yay, my first ARG swag! Smile

ETA: Dante, can you copy my changes into your Excel sheet?

I'm not sure if you need the solution for grid "07", the one with 8 paths, but here it is (the 4th path spells WATER VIDEO)

Cross's puzzle has 0 (zero) in the middle of the path with the 4s. definitely 0 and not O.

We figured this out last night in chat:

Cross' puzzle (grid #1) has the words

OPERATION ROTATION YOWIE QUINKIN JIMBRA

along the path connecting the fours.

If you'll go here you'll see that a "Yowie" is an Australian sasquatch (and Quinkin and Jimbra are other names for it).

Also in chat last night, we were working on the idea that the words in the grid were hints for filling in the blanks. For example in Sylvia's grid #9, the hint is "HUMBOLDT TIMES", googling that phrase gets you lots of hits for Bigfoot. There are 7 blanks for grid #9, which can be filled with the word Bigfoot.

These words are spelled out by following the #3 path in that puzzle.

I've created a (minimal, for now) page to track references and the package puzzles at http://various.wikibruce.com/page/MHC
The puzzles at this point are just the text grids without colour.

Discovered words can be added in their respective sections, and probably the easiest thing is to link to images (or the XLS files) that show the best coloured paths for the numbers within each puzzle.

I solved my puzzle (#11), and added it to the spreadsheet (attached). The sequences look like this:
Code:
1 roovernarnenrditt
2 owdirialeihdeffywo
3 dbaeavtfs
4 eokcsei
5 oymairootnu
6 ckomxsn

If you start at the first letter in the 1 sequence and work your way downward in columns, you can see the sequence, "rodeo cowboy kodak movie camera six rivers national forest nine hundred fifty two."

I'm still trying to figure out what that means, but the reference to a kodak movie camera could relate to John Wheeler's movies from Thailand, or possibly the book he read on the plane ride over (discussed in his second journal entry).

EDIT: After googling, "rodeo cowboy" and "six rivers national forest" both point to the infamous Patterson-Gimlin Film. Patterson was a rodeo cowboy, and the footage was filmed in the Six Rivers National Forest.

EDIT AGAIN: "952" is the number of frames in the film, which was shot on a kodak camera, so I think this is it. Since the solution appears to be 14 letters, I'm going to say that my answer is "ROGERPATTERSON". So that aligns the letter E with the number 11.
