Rambling Notes on HoL

I had to go out and buy HoL after all the hype, and I can definitely see a very strong relationship between it and what we know about this movie. I would guess that it was what inspired JJ etc to film a movie this way, with the different layers of storytelling and the focus on the documentary aspect of it all (how Navidson did it, why he did it, etc.). For example, there was some speculation that 1-18-08 is going to be about a camcorder that someone just found sitting there, they play it and then get the whole Rob party, slusho monster takeover of NYC, etc. That jibes pretty nicely w/ the way HoL is told, except maybe WE are the analysts.

(An offhand thought - in HoL the movie gets out to the general public and then tons of people (both real and fictional!) start deciphering it and analyzing it.... will THAT be the ARG?? Will we be asked to dissect and deconstruct an unsettling movie after the fact to try to find out what REALLY happened? Because if so (and I sort of hope it is), that would be so completely awesome and would also explain why the clues are so sparse now).

Additionally, in the book there is this record of this bizzare house on camera, but in actual reality nobody can find the people who were in the documentary OR the actual house... all tangible proof that it was in fact real seems to be gone but the documentary tape is just so convincing, it's almost impossible to believe that its fake. If this is the tack that 1-18-08 is taking.... well that would explain in OUR reality why NYC is still in existence, etc. after the movie comes out.

This may not be relevant but caught my eye - on p. 33 of my version (Ch. 4) there is at least a page worth of discourse on riddles. The highlights:

Quote:
Riddles: they either delight or torment. Their delight lies in solutions. Answers provide bright moments of comprehension perfectly suited for children who still inhabit a world where solutions are readily available.... the adult world, however, produces riddles of a different variety. They do not have answers and are often called enigmas or paradoxes. Still the old hint of the riddle's form corrupts these questions by re-echoing the most fundamental lesson: there must be an answer. From there comes torment.

I was astounded to read this in light of the fact that at least 2 of our myspace characters (Beth and Rob) enjoy riddles and have been playing them with us. I can't believe that's a coincidence. And I think we all can related to the torment we're being put through right now by the lack of clues and information.

In general however, I can guess at a lot of strong similarities between the storytelling of the movie and the way this book is structured. I've only just begun, but I can already tell this is one of the best books I've ever read.

I think that's exactly how this is going to play out.

That quote alone makes the book worth mentioning in Lil's account. ha! "the adult world, however, produces riddles of a different variety...."

Bought the book tonight
i havent read one since 1994

I admitedly(sp)(lol) am a slow reader. I have had this book for about two hours and I am enthralled totally. Im not far into it by any means, but whole ee carp, this is deep....deep deep. If it has noting to do with this movie WHATSOEVER I am o.k. with it. If it does more power to me.

I think it will likely play more to LOST, there is just a feeling there, but whatever.

any hoo If I get nothing more out of this forum and thread, Thank You for at least this read.

This is not for you.

This thread didn't exist when I posted this so here were my thoughts

I was just browsing the profiles and noticed that under the books section in Lily's profile she wrote, "House of Leaves - READ IT, it's incredible!!! The Corrections, Everything is Illuminated". I realize there are 3 books with these titles but strung together like that, it spoke to me.

House of Leaves seems to be a very strange book, with stories inside stories. The Wiki for House of Leaves was an interesting read. It suggested the book, "developed a cult following through gradual release over the Internet." Some of the ideas for an ARG could have come from this book. Hell the book seems like one.

For example, under Foreign languages, it reads, "At different times, Truant says: "Known Some Call Is Air Am". Although it appears to be a random string of words, it is actually phonetically equivalent to "Non sum qualis eram", Latin for "I am not as I was"." That is sort of how Mezin Source from the ethanhaswasright game/puzzle writes their text. Note: I am not suggesting a link.

Another example could be under Appendices where it says, "the Editors suggest that in order to better understand Johnny, the reader should turn to the letters from his mother (House of Leaves 72). Other entries appear to contain only disorganized fragments that could not be fit in elsewhere. These fragments, including poems, photocopies of scraps of paper, collages, notes, quotes, etc., may contain clues to some of the novel's mysteries." MySpace anyone?

I will be taking the fictional characters advice; I will read House of Leaves.

What's the scariest monster (you can imagine)
- it's hiding in the darkness

Maybe the new monster will never actually be seen in the movie.
