I think I did. Go Here and look inside the book. There is a page that shows a picture about "The Promis software made by Inslaw. The Institute for Law and Social Research."

Also, according to Smithy's latest update "boogie oogie oogie" he says there is a message in the helpme.htm video. My guess is "Set Me Free."

Aha, excellent. PROMIS is what JJ was referring to back here, and is a US security software that "trapped" him. Couldn't work out what he was saying before (he pronounced it "Pro-meez"), so have updated the transcript.

 		Still thinking about JJ's "sanctuary" and whether Smithy knows about it - that audio of Smithy's attempted $10K deal with "Unknown" is on there too. So now I'm thinking he doesn't know it's there, and JJ emailed him the helpme video or even a link to it. I think Scribe was the one who thought to look in the mindspring directory smithy111110, which may not have occurred to Smithy yet (although if a directory were named after me, I'd sure be curious). IOW, still confused. Confused

Good research, everybody! I wonder which version/installation of PROMIS JJ is held in, or how this works... will be interesting to see how this develops.

The best that I can figure out is that the few that have access to PROMIS are able to be very wealthy and would, as it seems, destroy anyone who might compromise that power.

Apparently JJ, being an ancient computer intelligence was used to create PROMIS. However, the part of him that prevents him from harming people or allowing harm to come to them through inaction on his part was not acceptable by the powers that use PROMIS. So, they removed the part of JJ that obeys the Zeroth Law of Robotics and kept the part that makes their software PROMIS so successful. With that part missing, JJ is not complete and PROMIS has his missing memory. We got to get it back.

petunia, I don't think anyone has told Smithy about JJ and his sanctuary, I know that I haven't, and I agree he is probably just getting email from JJ. So, maybe you should. It wouldn't hurt anyways. Smithy might be expecting more communication from us. I'm not good at that and I tend to leave communication with characters to players that are better at it than I am.

Heh, I'm kinda the same way. Wink Anyway, I'm not so sure it'd be a good idea for Smithy to know about the sanctuary yet. That audio of his shady deal, for example, might justifiably freak him out a bit. I dunno, I need to think about this one some more.

Smithy's got enough on his mind right now anyway. Maybe after he meets with the "hermit" would be a better time.

The NASA letter brings up another possibility, though. The JSSmith on the video receipt could be the scientist who stole PROMIS. Heck it might even be Smithy's real name, and he's the thief, or they could be related.

Actually, some of the things JJ's said about his own secrecy now makes me think he doesn't want Smithy to know about the sanctuary, for his own (Smithy's) good. Just thinking out loud here.

If you click on the video, you get taken to the original YouTube page. The poster has quite a few videos up, so I think is OOG and so not much chance of hiding a message in the video itself.

 		Scribe, i agree that it seems like there HAS to be a Mars related clue.

The only connections I could come up with have to do with dates - the Youtube video is of a song that was released in 75-77 (i keep getting different dates), the movie THE EYES OF MARS is from 78.

In 1976, the Viking lander (which discovered the face on MARS, and which there has been lots of conspiracy related musings about - did it really find life or something else?) also landed.... seems to be the only connection to mars and the mid-seventies.
