Ok, I appreciate what has been said about not having enough information but frankly I can't help myself from speculating, specially when I have just woken up and my subconscious mind has been twisting things around the other way from how we have so far interpreted Marsh-Ayre's encounter...

Here's my thinking, having reread (and reread and reread) Marsh-Ayre's Book Review:

1) To escape from the obsidian mirror, you need the cards (including The World) to make 100 points - the path of Passage / safe passage.

2) BIG WHAT-IF

What if he has been travelling around looking FOR the World entity in order to obtain the World card? "It could be anywhere. It is anywhere". "How can I take all this?"

(This fits in with his description of what he is looking for, if you reread it with this in mind).

He-She says: "Put out your hand," he-she says, "and I will give you everything you came for."

3) If you go with the flow on this, then the World was the LAST card he needed in order to complete the Path of Passage.

4) That way we would know that the other cards in his possession added up to 79.

5) Therefore we need to work out which cards would give him a decent hand added to his remaining 79 (though he cannot now obtain the World).

6) As veebee noted, the Fool card can change hands a number of times - he could pass this on next time...

7) Marsh-Ayre supposes that the entity is not actually the World but another traveller. Who has a brother, incidentally. So are they also collecting cards and hoping to achieve the path of passage and escape the mirror? EDIT: Who are they? Evil twins? TweedleDum and TweedleDee?

Cool EDIT Therefore is the real World still out there?

Thought that I would throw this out and see if it stimulates anyone, (or not). Question

So it looks like Dorcas came from outside and was going to kill the mirror. Where has she been hiding? Is she now in a coma and caught in the Mirror World? Do we have to get her out as well?

Waking a dormouse

I have emailed Alice and suggested pouring a little hot tea onto Dorcas Muse's nose. That is guaranteed to wake her up.

So finally we have the dormouse, interesting version of the name though.

Dorcas was a biblical character who was raised from the dead by Peter. It's of Greek origins
Muse, also greek origins, is from the Muses, a sisterhood of spirits who inspired creativity in the arts.

Looking at all the posts, doesn't this mean MA was willing to swap the World card?

AP, She's not even real, why get so obsessed?

Eh? Oh you mean my previous post expressing concern for Alice? Yeah that's part of the game; the whole point of ARGs is they are a reality, just not this one. Why play a game with a "who cares" attitude?

Finally! Hopefully Alice can get some answers from her now - before she smashes the mirror!

San Miguelion de los Mercados

Hur hur.

Hur hur hur hur.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
I'm fairly sure this is a joke -

http://www.mercadodesanmiguel.com/

The joke being that many of us have heard of this place before. Spelt, I admit, slightly differently.

I'm not saying that completely rules out its usefulness, of course.

British Library

This has now cropped up a few times, and although that's easily understandable from its status, I wondered with this latest link (the Dormouse being in its employ) and the fact that it's right next to the site of some live-ARG action already (at St Pancras), whether we should be looking more closely at it.

I'm not in London for a month or so, sadly, but if anyone with a reader's pass has the urge in a lunch break, it might be worth checking out their copy of Alice in Wonderland? They also have a copy of 'Alice Underground' (the first, handwritten, version) which is often on display with their special literary collections but can also be viewed online.

It's highly unlikely, but wouldn't it be great if a little piece of paper fluttered out when you opened the book? Wink

On a related matter, has anyone taken a look at the other mirror of the pair, Dr. Dee's mirror in the British Museum (or his Magic, for that matter)? It's in the Enlightenment room (room 1).

I'd gladly do it if I was there (one of life's great treats, a wander around either of these buildings).

jb.

Through the looking glass

I second someone going to have a look in the British Library. You may want to check out Alice through the looking glass too. They seem to be switching between the two books quite a bit.

A Wild Hare

I have been puzzling over the cryptic sentence "Where four creatures are gathered -- and I think, inexplicably, of a convent I once heard tell of, San Miguelion de los Mercados -- but the creatures are not important."

The syntax is so strange, I'm sure there is some clue buried there. I have been trying to work out anagrams for San Miguelion de los Mercados, but there are so many variations because so many letters (even excluding "lions", if that's what the last part means) ... I'm getting nowhere.

But I noticed the odd presence of the word "conventIon" in the middle there, and then I found that the London Book Fair started today ...

I don't want to start someone off on a fool's errand, but it might be worth checking out Penguin's booth at the Fair, no? (At Earl's Court, through Wednesday).

PS: I don't know, maybe not. Looking at the website, it doesn't look like LBF would be a very accessible place to invite participation. I don't want anyone to go to any trouble or expense, it just seemed like an interesting coincidence.

Yup, Gem_Star gets the credit for the find, way back on page 35 I think. Have fun catching up, you've just caught your first Trout !! Wink

I thought i'd solved something brilliant then! No, just following the link with the other players in the Lawrence and Terry story - but I guess I was the one to post first. Wink

Yeah I'm sure there's something there too, not found anything though.

I'm still fairly sure this is a joke referring to the Perplex City card - just something to be enjoyed, surely?

I agree with Wukka - it's a little joke, I'm sure. I think the 4 creatures that Marsh-Ayre is picturing are the human face, lion, ox and eagle that appear on the World tarot card:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_World_(Tarot_card)

These remind MA of the convent of the San Miguelion de los Mercados described in the Perplex City card Wukka found because that convent has a painting in it showing an angel, lion, bull and eagle, pretty much the same four creatures:

http://forums.unfiction.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=13276

That's my theory anyhow.

OOG:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):

Naomi Alderman designed that puzzle card, and I think she may also be the writer behind Marsh-Ayre's posts...
