"It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World"

Captain T. G. Culpepper, to be precise.

Re: just a little movie reference (and some history)

Cap'n Slim wrote:
Hi all... been checking things out and around the city myself. Got some good leads, but wanted to share a discovery...

The names MULLIGAN and CROTHERS both relate to the 1979 film "Scavenger Hunt" starring Scatman CROTHERS and Richard MULLIGAN (also, one of the teams names were CROTHERS).

The name CAPTAIN may refer to the movie "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World" whereas the entire game was monitored by a Captain

And now for the history:

The BLACK TOM explosion was the peak act of German sabotage on American soil during the First World War. On July 29, 1916, German agents set fire to a complex of warehouses and ships in the New York harbor that held munitions, fuel, and explosives bound to aid the Allies in their fight. Though America was technically a neutral nation at the time of the attack, general policies greatly favored the Allies. The attack persuaded many that the United States should join the Allies and intervene in the war in Europe.

BLACK TOM pier was located across the harbor from Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty. The pier partially rested on BLACK TOM Island, from which it derived its name. The adjacent shore was crowded with warehouses, loading docks, and train tracks. When all of the fuel and explosives were spent, the smoke cleared to reveal a swath of devastation several city blocks wide. BLACK TOM pier and most of its island were gone.

Could this be why there were double words throughout episode 2?

"Scavenger Hunt" (1979)
movie can be watched online for free

Although I don't believe it has been released on DVD, you can watch the 1979 movie "Scavenger Hunt" for free online. The review I read said it was good fun.

Other clues not discussed
Lots of stuff in this episode, I feel like I haven't scratched the surface

What does anyone think about all the "king" references in this episode? King Arthur, Larry the King. The town of Cortland (spelled the way the pirates do) is known as the "Crown City."

Unfortunately, Mayor Dinkins is heavily associated with riots that occurred during his term in Crown Heights Brooklyn. This is all fun and games and I don't think the pirates would be referencing a riot, but I'd through it out there.

Also, no one has mentioned the pictures the Captain talks about, although for my own reasons I think it points again to the Forest Hills subway station.

so I don't remember if there is any mosaic work down there or not relating to this cat in a tree business in the ticker.

About Dinkins. Yes he was the Major, but also Columbus Circle was also referred to as Dinkins Circle in an old NYTimes article.

Pretty sure the cat in the tree and Dinkins is a reference to the World Trade Center bombing in 1993 (next to Cortlandt St. station).

I thought the same thing when the ticker said the cat was brought down to 'ground level.'

Re: Dinkins Circle
Dinkins Circle ---> Flushing Meadows Corona Park

City of New York Honors Former Mayor David Dinkins

The base of the pasarelle just outside the East Gate public entryway to the US Open now has a new name, "David Dinkins Circle," after the former mayor of New York City and current USTA Board Member who was instrumental in keeping the US Open tournament in New York.

"For me, this tournament brings so many things together that I love," Dinkins said. "I love this tournament, I love this sport and I love this city. I am deeply grateful that my name will forever be associated with this tournament. It's an honor."

Dinkins assisted the USTA's relocation of the tournament in 1978 from the private club setting of Forest Hills to its current home at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows Corona Park, now the world's largest public tennis facility.

This would tie in with the ticker that comes right after the 'old man dinkins' story: "In 1978 you would have have found them all at Monroeville Mall. You can still go there today, but they probably won't be there."

Cortland is named "Crown City" because most uppermost
and crown of course refers to gold coin - so interesting coincidence

Cortland is named "Crown City" because it is the uppermost city to crown the state? This is notable given the emphasis on "Crow's Nest." (I'm going to Preble Lake near Cortland for a party tomorrow -- I just love talking about buried gold at a barbecue!) :0)

"The City of Cortland, settled in 1791, was incorporated in 1900 as the 41st city in the State of New York. Known as the "Crown City" because of its location on a plain formed by the convergence of seven valleys, Cortland is situated about 1,130 feet above sea level, making it the uppermost city to crown the state."

FYI- Captains only Twitter friend, Simon Pegg, interviewed George Romero who is mentioned in the ticker of episode 3.

In the interview they talk a little about 9/11 and the trade center

I think my most recent "solution" needs to be refined slightly.

As you may recall, I had concluded that the principal clues were the colors shown in the background of the video feeds of the characters displayed during THE LARRY KING show, along with the infographic showing the list of questions which the public was seeking answers to.

I then created a trail involving taking the Orange line from Columbus Circle to 34th Street / Herald Square where it meets up with a Yellow line, then taking the Orange or Yellow line to Jackson Heights-Roosevelt Avenue or Forest Hills-71 Avenue in Queens where it meets up with a Blue line. The final step was to take the Orange or Yellow line back through Manhattan and into Brooklyn where those lines converge again in an area where there is a Blue line above them - namely the Atlantic Ave area (and maybe further east near Prospect Park.)

Anyway, on further reflection I think that I should have focused on the station where the Blue line above the other lines was located, rather than the station where the Orange, Orange, Yellow and Yellow lines converged.

The Blue line stop closest to Atlantic Ave is the Lafayette Ave / Fulton Street station. One of the exits of this station is on N. Portland Ave in Brooklyn. According to this website (which cites to this book as its source) N. Portland Ave and S. Portland Ave were named "for a London street, Portland Place, a busy street near Regent's Park, laid out by Robert and James Adam in 1773, and named for the aristocratic House of Portland."

It is a stretch, but perhaps this is what the Port of Cortland clue referred to, using a C/P substitution on Cortland of course. Portland Ave starts from Atlantic Ave in the south, runs north (as S. Portland Ave) until it hits Fort Greene Park, and then continues north after the park as N. Portland Ave until it terminates at Flushing Ave, which is the beginning of the Brooklyn Navy Yard. So perhaps the park we will be in next (if the next destination is indeed a park) will be Fort Greene Park?

fellowtraveler's suggestions
I also noticed Portland street

I also noticed portland street in brooklyn when trying to figure out the Port of Cortland clue. Brooklyn makes a lot of sense because of all the King clues (Brooklyn is Kings county), and we know the puppeteers are from there.

But there are issues with the Atlantic stop, the biggest being that there's a green line there, which is not used in the video. And while the blue line is near there, I don't think you can say that its the Fifth Dock that you can't see if its not physically part of the station. Unless of course the docks in the clue are real docks, and are part of the Brooklyn Navy yard.

Also, the star on the map behind Larry King to me clearly indicates Queens. Brooklyn is too far south.

In any case, my feeling is that the treasure will end up being buried in Brooklyn anyway, because that's where the puppeteers are from and because of what kind of public land I expect the treasure to be buried in.

Another interesting connection - the USS Maine was built at the Brooklyn Navy Yard, located at the northern end of Portland Avenue.

Panoramio
in particular compare symbol to star, but note utility generally

Whether clued or not, the use of the photos from Google Earth is a great way to armchair treasure hunt.

Since its founding in 2005, Panoramio had seen rapid growth to 1 million registered users by October 2007. In July 2007, Panoramio was acquired by Google. Currently, most of the photos uploaded to the site can be accessed as a layer in Google Earth, with new photos being added at the end of every month. The site's goal is to allow Google Earth users to learn more about a given area by viewing the photos that other users have taken at that place. The ATP Photo Finder allows users to add geographical information to their digital photos without the help of a computer or any software. It is universally compatible with any digital camera using jpeg image files, giving users the convenience of a single device to geotag pictures from multiple camera brands and models.
