No moon

Just a simple observation but there appears to be a strong link with the moon. Peg mentions a lot about Fred's obsession with the moon and the callender on the event's page depicts the moon cycles. Also the book club is held on a "no moon" day. Just coincidental or something more?

A bunch of new character comments on the Library site.

Also, just wanted to point out that Feb. on the calendar is also called Solmonath (upper rt corner), which apparently is the Anglo-Saxon (possibly pagan?) name for the month before the Romans installed the "Julian" calendar:

http://earlymedievalbritain.blogspot.com/2009/02/february-solmonath-anglo-saxon-calendar.html

According to that site, it's also the Month of Cakes. So I'm going to celebrate with a Tastykake I just happen to have right here....

Yeah, the moon's got something to do with it. The fact that the calender the library uses happens to show the waxing and waning of the moon is a pretty big pointer that their scheduling relates to the moon, or maybe the puppetmaster wanted us to think of the moon when we thought about dates.

I've also been looking into a few other things, mostly taking a look at some of the technical attributes of Peg's posts, like when she uses bolds or what's with the weird spacing.

The posts with odd spacing would be I, II, and III. The odd spacing in the first one isn't noticable at first but if you zoom out a little it should become apparent when the spacing jumps to other side. (It may vary depending on browsers.) The segments that seem to be spaced apart are:

Moon"?
kid you not,

Fred
he's

related
and she tells
myself.

Maybe more posts on Peg's blog will add sense to these words... or maybe this is just a technical problem that occurs when Peg makes her posts. I really don't know. Maybe I am over-analyzing this. One thing that makes me second guess the fact that spacing may be significant is that the first post with odd spacing couldn't be seen at 100% zoom while the other two could. I'm not too great with hidden messages and whatnot but I feel there might some buried within a few of Peg's more meaningless posts.

Last but not least, I've been looking at the usage of bold in Peg's posts. She's used it about three times so far. One of the times was just her talking about the weather as if she were on the weather channel, deeming that irrelevant in my mind.

But for the other two uses of bold, may have meaning... it's nothing big but I did notice that in a post directly before the one with "Howl!" in bold (the one that mentioned the new moon as well), the word significant was in bold. While this may just be Peg putting emphasis on the word significant, I think because these posts are adjacent in the timeline the puppetmaster may have put significant in bold to suggest that Howl!, which followed it in bold on the next post, was significant. Of course it may be more trouble to figure out that relation than to understand that Howl was significant so I don't really know where I'm going with this. I guess I'm just bored so I'm pointing out useless information. XD

Characters

Just summarising the list of characters we can identify from the two websites so far:

Snow Town was founded by the Hoskins, the Harmons, and the Haynes in 1711. http://forums.unfiction.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=810498#810498 Another key family seems to be the Triplets, though we don't know when they arrived.

Snow Town formed by H's who were running away from religious persecution. They were followers of an Esoteric religion, labelled in 1711 "Spiritualists" They formed their own religion called The Society. Some sat Job Harmon was a Rosicrucianist who came to the colonies to create his own form of those traditions. The Society dabbles with magic, many forms of alchemy and believes nature to be a living entity. The Society's traditions included a deep connection to certain symbols and rituals. http://forums.unfiction.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=813531#813531

PrivateSnowtown: The person who started first contact with the overdue library notices, and wrote the howl message about hearing bells and trying to solve this mystery. http://snowtownlibrary.org/howl.html No name given as yet, but email privatesnowtownSPLATgmail.com

Private is somehow connected to the library, has access to the vault, and access to the website admin, is part of the bookclub, from a founding family, yet says feels like out of the loop (not accepted).

While Private was very concerned about the Bells at the beginning, when the Snow People arrived s/he lost her concern, began partying like, drinking spirits, like everyone else. Private likes to build snow caves like she did when she was a child, and goes there to retreat. It makes her feel good to be close to the snow.

Now getting afraid due to scratching sounds at night and spirals.

Peg Harmon: Writes the blog http://www.snowtown.me/, PegSPLATsnowtown.me , obsesses about the weather, and her husband Fred's weird behaviour. She and Fred don't attend the library bookclub. She found The Magician's tape. Next door to them is an empty house that Louise Hoskins lived in 100 years ago, but no one has lived in since.

She feels less worried about the Snow People now that the town is so happy, but she still has suspicions. She is actively trying to uncover the mystery. Has reached out to her nephew Lawrence and Natasha Haynes Triplet to help her.

Fred Harmon: Has been hearing bells and behaving oddly, running around in the snow early in the morning. Married to Peg. No longer seems worried about the Snow People - but is agitated by scratching noises at night that send him running outside. He is now aware of his unconscious writing. Edward says that Fred is the hand of the Snow People in communicating their message.

Ruthie Randolph: Head Librarian at Snow Town Library http://snowtownlibrary.org/Home_Page.html and great niece of Louise Hoskins. Peg has noticed her running around in the middle of the night so presumably she also hears the bells. Ruthie also runs a weekly book club at the library, and tightly controls who does and doesn't join - mostly founding families. However, she is now organising a virtual book club for the rest of us, starting on Tuesday 1st March. Ruthie is scared of the Magician.

She claims not to have control of the vault - that is controlled by the Historical Society.

We know she is not PrivateSnowtown because Private emailed enaxor with a suggestion to contact Ruthie under a guise to gain information from her http://forums.unfiction.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=31631 RuthieSPLATsnowtownlibrary.org

Since the Snow People arrived Ruthie has begun flirting with three men: Tom Haynes, Gordon Triplet (who is married), Paul Harmon (Fred's brother).

She has been following Peg, and apparently will do anything to protect the Snow People. A thinly veiled threat was made in the Virtual Book Club http://forums.unfiction.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=813688#813688

Charles Gulliffer: According to the library guesbook, he heads up the Snow Town Historical Society, which undertakes the library vault inventory each year. This is due to take place Tuesday 22nd Feb. He may be PrivateSnowtown.

He is at the top level of the Historical Society (of 3 levels) - has access to slates. Peg guesses his age is mid-late 70s.

Molly Harmon: Librarian Aid. She undertook an Adult's Education course to help get the library website up. Another person close enough to the library that she could be PrivateSnowtown.

Molly is married to Lawrence. Followed Peg down to the lake with Ruthie. Now likes to go sledding each day. Loves going to church. She did an Adult's Ed class to help with get the website up.

Lawrence Harmon: Peg's favourite nephew, he helps Peg investigate and upload videos to YouTube. Is making a doco about it all, Legend of the Snow People. Married to Molly.

Edward Harmon : Another of Peg and Fred's nephews. He has always made Peg 'nervous' and is 'heavy into the library crowd' http://forums.unfiction.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=810379#810379. He is Ambassador level in the Historical Society, which owns and controls the mysterious historic materials in the library vault. http://snowtownlibrary.org/Historical_Society.html However, Edward is only bottom level (of 3 levels) doesn't have access to the secret slates.

He's also a bit of a flirt, funny when drunk, which - what with the Snow People' decree - we can assume is now going to be often. http://forums.unfiction.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=812041#812041
EdwardSPLATsnowtownlibrary.org

He's a concert pianist. Likes to eavesdrop. Feels drawn to the Snow People. Active member of the church. Is the "brains and talent" behind the technology at the library. Could be Private.

Clare Haynes Triplet: Is part of the bookclub and Historical Society, she put up this map that left off some locations (why?) http://snowtownlibrary.org/Historical_Society.html Seems to be sided with Ruthie to protect the Snow People- aware of the snooping Peg and us are doing. Since the snow people she likes to dance in the snow with scarfs an hour a day. Her Great Uncle William Haynes was one of Louise's suitors.

Natasha Haynes Triplet: Is 102 year old, the oldest bookclub member alive. http://forums.unfiction.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=810844#810844 Clare helped show her the 'new digs' which could refer to the online website, or that she's been away and the library has been renovated/moved.

She is top level of the Historical Society - access to slates (which she appears to have stolen and given to Peg) nhtSPLATsnowtownlibrary.org Joined the virtual book club. She drinks wine rather than spirits, so not Private.

While only 2 yrs old last time the snow people were here, she remembers the fun of sledding at Thrill Hill (which is near L.H. house), and the snowpeople only stayed a week. She has a different take on the beginning of Snow People to Ruthie. She says she vowed to her father that she would live to stop the Snow People. She belives she can use her traditions to stop the Snow People, but other members don't agree - they want to walk only in the footsteps of their ancestors.

She has given something to Peg to keep her safe. (Or so she says!)

Julie nee Hoskins: Runs the General Store, is Ruthie's cousin. Is nice, not part of historical society clique, but is a long time volunteer for the library. Drawn to the Snow People. Might be Private

Tom Haynes: Another early poster on the library guestbook, from one of the founding families. Possibly in love with Ruthie as Ruthie posted this in the guestbook: "As promised to you, dearest Tom. "The rose is fairest when 'tis budding new, And hope is brightest when it dawns from fears; The rose is sweetest wash'd with morning dew, And love is loveliest when embalm'd in tears""

Tom Haynes Sr is top level of the Historical Society - access to slates [unsure if this is the same Tom Haynes or a different one]http://forums.unfiction.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=813393#813393

Paul Harmon: Fred's brother, one of Ruthie's suitors.

Gordon Triplet: Another of Ruthie's suitors, though he is married.

Louise Hoskins: Head Librarian 1889-1911, from her poem sounds like she heard the bells a hundred years ago and also went running through the snow. http://snowtownlibrary.org/howl.html Born 1859 and died in 1911, never married. Anti censorship activist, stood up to the Snow Town residents to keep The Dial Magazine in the library (they thought it was associated with the devil).

Peg tells us that no one has lived in Louise's house for 100 years, which is next door to Peg, at the junction of Flurry St and Tempest Trail.

Had three suitors, Jediah Harmon, William Hayes, and ? - one was married. She herself seems fondest of William. She kept a diary, of which some pages have been found.http://www.snowtown.me/?p=364

Jediah Harmon one of Louise Haynes suitors.

William Haynes, who Louise was in love with, Clare's great Uncle. He was reluctant to enter the lower spiral.

The Magician tells us that "Louise waits in the pages of the past." http://snowtownlibrary.org/songofthebell.html

The Magician: 80 yrs old man. Left a tape recording in the woods that Peg found. http://www.snowtown.me/?p=327 He wants to stop the Snow People. The Magician said the Snow People have a serious and dark history. He may be the unreliable narrator, as what he said about the settlement of Snow Town is different to what Natasha said.

Job Harmon: The one who the Snow People communicated with in 1710 and wrote down the decree http://snowtownlibrary.org/SNOW_PEOPLE_DECREE_1711.html Was a Rosicrucianist.

Luke Harmon: A kid in town.

I agree that there must be something significant about these blank spaces.

I copied and pasted the message into word and found that in the message dated 16th February in the blank spaces there were 30, 16, and 9 "spaces" inserted.

This message, dated 20th Feb, had 31, 38, and 29 "spaces" inserted in the blank spots.

As the spaces range from 9 to 38 in length, is seems like the number might be important - if she were just trying to call attention to the word the spacing discrepancy would be more uniform (like always 10 spaces).

Message dated 21st Feb http://www.snowtown.me/?p=256
44, 30, 28, 29 blank spaces.

23rd February http://www.snowtown.me/?p=275
22, 25, 19, 5, 12, 11,5,5, 13

Asked "private" about any local lake & moon legends. If Natasha Triplet is a centenarian she may know some town secrets:

Private wrote:
Not only do I lock my cellar door, I also place an old black chair beneath its door knob. Does that sound foolish and paranoid? I hope this ordeal doesn't send me over.

Lady of the Lake legends... none that I know. Although, you and your community should understand there are many things I don't know about Snow Town. I've always had the feeling that I am out of the loop here. I can't put my finger on it, but it may have something to do with the fact that I am not originally from Snow Town. I'm, as the locals like to
say, "from away".

ETA: Think Natasha saying "Clare is showing me around the new digs" she means the new website & isn"t addle-brained

Private - Lady of the Lake

Just got a reply from Private:

Quote:
Dear Luci,

Thank you for your help. Do you wonder why Fred heard the bells, but Peg did not? Perhaps Peg is a heavy sleeper? Hard of hearing? I have spent this evening searching for some sort of connection between Fred, Ruthie and myself. Nothing yet comes to mind.

At this point in time, I believe it is best to keep my identity private.

I replied with another question regarding Lady of the Lake - there are several books by that name, so I asked if s/he remembered the author or imprint so we could track down another copy.

Edit: New response to my question:

Quote:
The Lady of the Lake by Sir Walter Scott
James R. Osgood and Company 1883

I also remember that it had been tagged with the DDC 821 SCO. Which means, at some point in time, it was in circulation at the Snow Town Library.

Edit: Am guessing there is something significant about the letters private gave DDC 821 SCO - though I'm not much good with codes.

Here is a link to an online copy of the book, same edition http://www.archive.org/stream/ladylake23scotgoog#page/n12/mode/2up

However, it is a very long poem, and this wikipedia entry gives a good summary http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Lady_of_the_Lake_(poem) - in it one of the characters calls himself a Knight of SNOWDOUN, but is actually a king travelling incognito. There is a prophecy, a clan war, bloodshed, revenge, pardon... but no bells as far a I can see.

I searched the full length poem, and the only relevant section is this on page 37

http://ia700304.us.archive.org/BookReader/BookReaderImages.php?zip=/14/items/ladylake23scotgoog/ladylake23scotgoog_jp2.zip&file=ladylake23scotgoog_jp2/ladylake23scotgoog_0045.jp2&scale=4&rotate=0

I'm not good at deciphering poetry - but I think the above means that strangers will hear the bells during the quite of the night and be compelled to follow the noise.

Timeline of Information
I put together a timeline of useful information.

Hey, like I said, I'm bored... so I decided I would throw together a timeline to pull the information together, as the dates do look pretty important and this might pull together relations to the moon or the Xs. Here I go:

  • February, 1811 | The Snow Town Library was started
  • 1889 - 1911 | The duration of Louise Hoskins being head librarian
  • January 30, 1911 | The day Louise Hoskins heard bells and wrote Howl
  • August, 2010 | Privatesnowtown finds spiral in The Lady of the Lake
  • February 1, 2011 | Peg makes a reference to Howl and the new moon
  • February 2, 2011 | Privatesnowtown heard bells at night in the cellar, had quite a fright, and went back to bed. The Lady of the Lake was gone.
  • February 3, 2011 | New moon
  • February 9, 2011 | Fred, Peg's husband, runs off to the lake following the sounds of bells.
  • February 13, 2011 | Privatesnowtown Saw dots on their windshield corresponding to the dots on the paper.
  • February 14, 2011 | Valentines day marked with red x on Upcoming Events
  • February 18, 2011 | Ruthie is seen running around at night. Book club night. Marked with red x.
  • February 19, 2011 | Peg reports her husband acting very weird and secretive, writing on white slips of paper at his desk.

Actually, it said the author in the Howl message... It was written by Sir Walter.

As it looks like this is the time Private is replying to everyone, I'm going to ask private about themself. There's no reason for Private to be so secretive if we're trying to help.

I sent Private an email....

malevolentNeon wrote:
Your concerns may well be justified. I suggest you go look at the blog of a fellow Snow Town resident, Peg, at http://www.snowtown.me/. Pay particular attention to this entry; Peg's husband, Fred, also heard bells, albeit on the 9th. They seemed to cause erratic behavior in him. Surely this cannot be a coincidence. Maybe you should try to talk to Peg about it.

In the meantime, might I request a recreation of the slip of paper you found inside The Lady of the Lake? The more information you can provide us with, the more we can do to help you.

Louise Hoskins seems to be connected somehow. I will attempt to send Ruthie Randolph an email to try and learn a bit more about Louise, under the pretense of a school assignment or some such. I can assure you that I will not mention you, whoever you are. I understand your desire to keep this under wraps.

Nevertheless, my associates and I will do whatever we can to assist you in this strange matter.

Yours sincerely, waywardProtagonist

PS: About that disappearing book. Someone must have stolen it. But I can't shake the feeling that it was someone working in the library that did the deed; they'd have access to the vault, surely, and would probably be able to smuggle a book out with ease.

And received a reply.

Private wrote:
Dear Wayward,

Thank you for your assistance. I had hoped my Late Notices would catch the eye of someone like you and your friends.

As you know from my HOWL message, I'm new to creating and deciphering secret codes. I used my new set of skills to create a secret code to guide you and members of your community to the Spiral image. I set up this private page on the Snow Town Library site. You can find this page by cracking the number codes I placed onto the 4 Snow Town Library Late Notices. Have you seen the Notices?

I agree with you about Louise Hoskins. Your plan to engage Ruthie is an excellent way to gather more information about her.

Peg had mentioned she was writing a weather blog. I had no idea she was sharing personal information. She is quite forthcoming, isn't she? I hope Ruthie never stumbles onto it.

Your assumptions about the Snow Town Library vault are correct. There are very few people that have access to this vault. It has always been well guarded. I know Ruthie has a list, but I do not know where she keeps it. This list seems very important to her and to Charles Gulliffer.

Best of luck with Ruthie, Wayward.

This seems to take Charles Gulliffer off the suspect list for the identity of being Private. I sent an email to Ruthie posing as a student doing an assignment, using an email different to the one used to sign the guestbook, but I haven't received a reply yet.

Hey all, this is the first ARG I've started from the beginning. I'm pretty excited.
Is it just me, or does Freds snowman (all the way on the right) in Pegs latest post look like "Masky"/"Tim" from Marble hornets?
Just found that creepy.

Book Code

The code Private lists as on the Lady of the Lake book is a dewey decimal code a system libraries use to catalogue books. just checking now to see if it's universal.

DDC - Dewey Decimal Code
820 - English/Old English Lit.
SCO - ?scott? the author?

cannot find any DDC with letters in, even the original proposition for the system, dated 1879 (http://www.gutenberg.org/files/12513/12513-h/12513-h.htm) doesn't suggest abbreviating author's names as a final section to the catalogue. could be significant, could be a peculiarity of the ST library.
There is, however, usually some sub classification of catagories, ie not 820, but 821 - English poetry, or 822 English Drama. and then another 3 digit number referring to the subject matter, so the code Private gives is not complete in the classic usage of the DDC system.
ETA:

a reply from Private:

Quote:
Dear OCTAF1SH,

Thank you for sending along your thoughts about Snow Town.

I agree with you about the bells and our lake. Someone else pointed me to Peg's blog. It does seem that Fred's experiencing something as well. This fact makes me wonder if there are others hearing bells or seeing spirals. Snow Town is such a reserved place. It is highly unusual for folks in our town to share anything that might make them appear strange or off center. I suppose we aren't much different than many small New England villages.

Putting in a request to Ruthie for the missing book is an excellent idea. Promise you will be cautious. Ruthie is highly intelligent and we cannot have her suspect we are snooping around her library. Protective does not begin to embrace her manner when it comes to the Snow Town Library and its contents.

Best of luck

I did send Ruthie 2 emails, one introducing myself as a new resident and book lover, the other asking for a copy of the Lady of the Lake....no response to either yet.
