For newcomers, backstory, story so far, links etc.

SUMMARY OF EVENTS SO FAR

This is an Alternate Reality Game most probably made by 42 Entertainment. It all started in the first half of 2011 with some clues leading to www.testsubjectsneeded.com. For example, a morse code in a DC comic:

A QR code in LA Weekly and other magazines:

Handouts at E3 Expo and Comic-Con:

Also in several Wrigley's 5 Gum commercials and posters. See the end of the post.

On this website, www.testsubjectsneeded.com, the player was to take part in some sort of "evaluation", and answer some multiple-choice questions about senses. (This quiz is now located at http://www.survivalcode.com/evaluations/new.) Here's an excerpt of the videos accompanying the test:

YouTube: Link

In the end you received a "sense print" and an ID card.

When registering you were asked to give postal address. Some time later you received a package with a piece of paper and a helicopter with a blinking LED light. (These were mailed all over the world, even here in Hungary.)

The QR code on the helicopter led you to www.missionicefly.com where a countdown and an icefly were seen.

Gradually, some city names appeared below the countdown. See attachment.
Quote:
Operation Reboot
Los Angeles, Phoenix, Las Vegas, Portland, Dallas, Washington DC, Nashville, Chicago, Denver, Orlando, Seattle, Boston, New York, San Francisco, Atlanta

Meanwhile, two videos were posted on YouTube. They showed identical helicopters flying down from a plane at Bonnaroo Music Festival. This one, version 2, only differs from version 1 regarding the guy in the end, who is the actor Terry O'Quinn, most famous for playing John Locke in the "Lost" series.

YouTube: Link

Some days before 30th June (the day the countdown ended) the following text appeared on www.missionicefly.com:

Quote:
ATTENTION TEST SUBJECTS: Starting at 00:00:00:00:000 we will need one volunteer in each of the listed locations to follow a signal.

Details:
• Bring a mobile phone with you (standard text messaging rates apply)
• You will need to use your online user name from TestSubjectsNeeded.com during the mission (register here in advance)
• Only one package available per location (first come, first served)

That meant a big nationwide treasure hunt. When the countdown ended, a new page went live at www.missionicefly.com/rescue. It contained a video that was very distorted and flickering. Gradually PDF files were uploaded that contained lat/long coordinates and pictures of the locations in the cities where black envelopes were hidden. Meanwhile the fancy Flash site was overloaded and it was soon replaced with a simpler HTML one. The real life action was reported here in real-time, as well as on the official http://twitter.com/Mission_Icefly and not to forget Unforum. As the players found the treasure, their names also displayed.

The envelopes in the cities contained a metal key and a paper slip with a phone number to text. When the players texted their username and password, they were given a new location in response. There they found a chest to be opened with the key which contained a mechanical Icefly that when connected lit up, and some time later started to blink the morse code SURVIVALCODE.COM.

(Not all Iceflies worked perfectly. Some didn't lit up, some didn't blink and some had only half of it working - thorax or abdomen. Some of the owners received a replacement for their malfunctioning iceflies which were damaged during transport.)

Finders of the iceflies had to upload picture proof of the finding to the official Flickr here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/missionicefly/ The pictures cover all the envelopes, chests, iceflies etc. Here is a user's own photoset that I find great: http://www.flickr.com/photos/64687556@N07/

The video on the website became gradually watchable, but it was in a messed up order. In the end an URL flashed in:
www.survivalcode.com/thegenesis

This new website featured a longer and right-order version of the previous video that featured actor Terry o'Quinn, finding of the Icefly in the Antarctic, mysterious small girls and women holding onto mysterious packages and icefly drawings.

After that some images of a snowy landscape, and a base entry with a new countdown were shown. You could then log in with TSN account and your new profile contained some "log files", some comics also featuring the character played by O'Quinn.

These and the movie contained footage of Traelek Institute where the character played by O'Quinn is a teacher. This institute has a website at http://traelekinstitute.com, which also contained a phone number: 866-843-5774. Who called, received a pre-recorded message:

Quote:
Thank you for calling the Traelek Institute, celebrating its 25th year of operations. Please listen to a word association quiz that we issue to new students upon matriculation: DECOY. ASCENT. BLAMELESS. MISGUIDED. What do these terms illicit in your mind's eye? There are no correct answers, only questions. At the Traelek Institute, we believe that the pursuit of sensory data is its own reward, so check back at our website if you have any fresh impulses as a result of the quiz you just sampled. Goodbye.

You could also leave voicemail messages, tag them as "urgent" and "confidential", and there was an option to enter phone number extensions. So far none were found, except for those remaining in the system from previous 42 Entertainment ARGs such as The Dark Knight, Flynn Lives, or the Nine Inch Nails' Year Zero. Entering different numbers at the request of the automat, other messages were heard:

Quote:
Thank you for calling. Please leave a message, and your call will be returned as soon as possible.
Quote:
Thank you for calling. To speak to a representative, please press 0.
(not working)
Quote:
Please enter the extension you are logging into, followed by pound. If you are logging into your main extension, press pound now.
Quote:
For your protection, phone access to this extension has been locked, due to invalid PIN attempts. Please contact your account administrator to unlock the extension. Goodbye.

The above word quiz led to some images at the Traelek Institute website:

http://traelekinstitute.com/ascent: Some pages out of the sketchbook of the girl in the video.
http://traelekinstitute.com/blameless:A newspaper clipping featuring a child apparently having had burned down his parents' house.
http://traelekinstitute.com/decoy: A gold ring on a paper with handwriting.
http://traelekinstitute.com/misguided: A brochure for Hiltrecht military academy directed at teens. It has no website, not even Google results.

Some time later the profile page on www.survivalcode.com changed. Each user received 3 "test facility keys" and 0 "constellation keys". Constellation keys were retrievable via entering codes found on 5 Gum boxes, which also featured the Icefly logo.

When the countdown ended, a puzzle was displayed. Go to http://icefly.wikibruce.com/Genesis_Event for images and description. Using the semaphor code alphabet, this was solved to reveal a list of random words that, as an acrostic, spelled out "Reclaim the light". At http://survivalcode.com/reclaimthelight an "audio-breakout-arkanoid" sort of flash game was found. It originally had 20 levels, now it has 50. The URL isn't working any more.

Logging in at www.survivalcode.com now takes the player to the so-called Facility 1 (behind the entrance in the snowy landscape). This is explorable in a sort of Flash animation game and contains many puzzles to solve, including the audio thingy. These also need the use of Facility and Constellation Keys to unlock some parts. Check out http://icefly.wikibruce.com/Facility_1 for detailed puzzle info.

Wandering in the facility and completing puzzles unlocks achievements and new log files (comics). These tell the story of Bobbi Gnarsea (the girl with Heightened Sensory Perception from the movie) and Professor Gerald Traelek (Terry O'Quinn) and contain clues that link to:

http://www.traelekinstitute.com/biophysicsmonthly, a magazine called Biophysics Monthly.
http://www.traelekinstitute.com/benevolence, a letter to the Professor. From italic text on the first page of Biophysics Monthly.
http://www.traelekinstitute.com/longing, a letter from Bobbi to "Maxine". From underlined text inside the magazine.
http://www.traelekinstitute.com/conduit, a strange drawing. From using all missing letters from /longing.
http://www.traelekinstitute.com/aftermath, a newspaper piece about a strange crater and burning debris in the middle of the Siberian tundra. From the tagline on /conduit.
The phone number 888-262-7417. It has a pre-recorded message which says:
Quote:
Have you seen my dog? He answers to Scruff Mcgee and he's really friendly. And he's the only friend I have since I moved to the institute, except for Bobbi, who's really nice. But she's new, Scruffy's been my friend for 3 1/2 years. Mr. Traelek is nice enough to let me keep him in my room. So please let me know if you've seen my dog, Scruff Mcgee.

In the beginning of August, new packages were mailed out which contained an ID badge, a free pack of gum, a message, and most importantly what seemed like a piece of a QR code.

There were different versions of the QR code piece. This made it pretty clear that the players have to put the pieces together in a puzzle. The solving of this puzzle can be found here: http://icefly.wikibruce.com/TSN_Badges

The QR code led to www.survivalcode.com/converge, a new visual puzzle. You can read about it here: http://icefly.wikibruce.com/Converge

The puzzle resulted in the password "extraction" that one player had to enter on http://www.facebook.com/5Gum. Here you could vote for which 3 of 6 US cities you would like to receive the drop in the next phase of Mission Icefly, titled Extraction.

After a countdown, Miami, Houston and San Diego received a similar icefly to the ones before, and players were given new log files. Facility 2 opened on 15th August with new puzzles to solve and logs to unlock. (Visit http://icefly.wikibruce.com/Facility_2 for puzzle info and solution.) The logs included clues to:
http://Traelekinstitute.com/BBB, a bus company brochure.
http://Traelekinstitute.com/reminisce, a drawing of Professor Traelek.
http://Traelekinstitute.com/gifted, the file of a patient named Eddie. From italic text on /reminisce.
http://Traelekinstitute.com/672A1299, a Biophysics Monthly article. From the patient number on /gifted.
http://Traelekinstitute.com/RFCS0, a Test Subject File. From capitals in the magazine article.

The third wave of Iceflies were hunted down on September 6 in Anaheim, New Orleans and Tampa. Facility 3 opened straight away. Puzzle solutions can be found at http://icefly.wikibruce.com/Facility_3. The new logs led to the discovery of:

http://traelekinstitute.com/enigma, a typed message from Natalia (Suttinger?).
http://traelekinstitute.com/important, a Chatfield Gazette article about Will Holdstrom who perceives Everyday Synchronicity. From italic text on /enigma.
http://traelekinstitute.com/pyrosensitivity, a short article about a sensory dysfunction. From highlighted letters on /important.
http://traelekinstitute.com/expressive, a poster about the American Sign Language. From a quite noticeable word on /pyrosensitivity.
http://traelekinstitute.com/ily, a letter from Bobbi to Maxine. Abbreviation of 'I love you' that /expressive refers to.

During the Facility 3 phase, new pages were found via 5 Gum's Facebook. These offer a sort of demo version, an introspection or a taste of the game most likely in order to pull in more people to the game. These are:
http://www.survivalcode.com/pages/audiowall, a 20 level version of the Music Bounce Game
http://www.survivalcode.com/preludeLogViewer.html, a viewer for the first 5 logs
http://www.survivalcode.com/pages/repel, abridged version of the Repel game.

In October some bloggers received a package which consisted of a "radio" with a message from Natalia Suttinger (played by actress Summer Glau).

YouTube: Link

She appeared on New York Comic-Con on the 14th. There was a Human Preservation Project booth where visitors were given free T-shirts, gum and pictures taken which could be redeemed at http://www.survivalcode.com/nycc.

Command Center opened around October 13. New subpages:
http://traelekinstitute.com/reconnaissance, article about Eddie Jalovich's lab.
http://traelekinstitute.com/attention, letter from Will Holdstrom to Professor Traelek.
http://traelekinstitute.com/answers, Professor Traelek's article about lucid dreams.
http://traelekinstitute.com/unexpected, official record of snowfall in July 1996.
http://traelekinstitute.com/summersnow, another letter from Bobbi to Maxine.

Some video logs made by Natalia Suttinger were found and the Youtube channel also had one new video uploaded.

In he beginning of November Facility 4 opened. Although it was way greater and more spectacular than the others and Natalia also claimed that it was the HPP's "last stand", the gyroport indicated that Facility 5 is under excavation. We also learnt that these facilities were left for us to find by the HPP around 1604000000 years ago (and no, I haven't fallen asleep on the 0 button.) New pages found were:

http://traelekinstitute.com/saveus, message from the ancient HPP.
http://traelekinstitute.com/astonishing, an ermm... yeah.
http://traelekinstitute.com/ibc and http://www.traelekinstitute.com/nu, another Bobbi-Maxine letter torn apart.
http://traelekinstitute.com/proclivity, letter from the HPP to Gerald Traelek.

On November 17 Facility 5 opened and it is probably the last one. I heard that there is some kinda ending vid for those who complete the game. Here are the final files:

  • Genesis Event is over.

  • Facilities 1, 2, 3, 4 and Command Center are open for registering, wandering and completing puzzles at www.survivalcode.com
  • Collecting codes from 5 Gum packaging to unlock keys for the facility

THEORIES ABOUT WHAT THE CAMPAIGN IS ADVERTISING

The fact that the code that started everything was also found as flashing text at the end of a Wrigley's 5 Gum ad, and morse code on 5 Gum posters, led to the speculation that the whole campaign is solely for advertising 5 Gum. This theory was supported by several connections:
  • Codes to enter on www.survivalcode.com were found on 5 Gum packaging
  • Rumors about 5 Gum planning to release a new flavour
  • 5 Gum having had viral marketing campaigns before
  • Features included both in the game and in 5 Gum advertising, such as the design of the website (fonts, colours, animation of flickering text) and of the facility, the gyroscope, actor(s), the icefly itself, logos (flavours=constellaton keys), the general theme of senses
This was enough for a leading viral marketing reporter website, www.movieviral.com, to conclude very early on that the campaign is surely for 5 Gum and state this whenever they published an article about the new events. (http://www.movieviral.com/tag/test-subjects-needed/)
For other players though, based on the Hollywood-style videos that later appeared, or rather on previous experience with 42 Entertainment ARGs, it seemed more likely that 5 Gum is nothing more than a major sponsor for the campaign that is probably about an upcoming Hollywood movie or series. (Why so much ado for ... gum?)

As of the end of August 2011 it seems unquestionable that the campaign is only about gum. Wrigley Company itself published the information that the number of players involved is around 600,000.

Personal notes

I'm intending to keep this post up-to-date. Feel free to post corrections, additions, recommendations that I should include. For example, would it be better if the summary section had chapters?

Also check out the wiki: http://icefly.wikibruce.com

SolarMarr, Ogawa, iRobotZombie! Thank you all for your invaluable help!

Also, I live in Hungary where no 5 Gum is available and I don't have PayPal. I would appreciate free key codes in PM Very Happy
Thank you Felinae for a free one!

UPDATE, 2011 December 10: Currently I don't play the game any more. I've just started university and living in Hungary makes it too difficult to get my hands on codes, so I can't even proceed. PM me if you have details that should be added here, and I'll do the rest.

Can anyone update with the information from Mission Icefly plus what was learned/discovered afterwards? I really don't want to look through the 70 something new pages in the trailhead topic since I last checked in....

Thanks!

Long post is long. I wish uF had those collapsible spoiler tags. XD

Here's a rough timeline from today, so that marczellm might have an easier time editing that first post. I'll use links instead of pics to conserve space.

Pregame

-Emails from testsubjectsneeded.com (hereafter TSN) were sent out on the evening of June the 29th to players who had registered. The contents of these emails were similar to the notice that had appeared at the bottom of missionicefly.com. That same evening the official Twitter account @Mission_Icefly sent out its first tweet, "Less than 18 hours to go."

-Morning of June the 30th. Ground teams across the country rendezvous at locations of their choosing and get in touch with Oracles as well as each other. Net support teams begin lurking various Twitter feeds and engage in a number of large real-time chats.

-@Mission_Icefly makes its second tweet, "Ready?"

-The countdown at missionicefly.com reaches zero at 19.00.00 GMT/UTC (3 PM Eastern, 2 Central, 12 Pacific). The metal "eye" became clickable. When clicked, the "eye" would open and the icefly would zoom inside.

The game is afoot.

-After missionicefly.com apparently got nuked from the heavy traffic, @Mission_Icefly makes its third tweet, "Refresh."

-The new page of missionicefly.com, linked from the previously closed metal "eye," is missionicefly.com/rescue/ and lists our lovely fifteen cities in a column. Each name is initially greyed out.

-It appears the drops will be executed in batches, and New York and Orlando are the first two up. Their city names became white underlined hyperlinks, which linked to .pdfs that contained a latitude/longitude pair, some basic ground rules, and an image of what to look for (for example, a bench or doorway).

-Thanks to fantastic ground work and great net/ground cooperation, Orlando and NY reach their locations quickly. Each location contained a single black envelope depicting an icefly silhouette on its front. These envelopes provided the player with a key and paper slip describing their next actions: to text a number with a provided password and await further instructions.

-@Mission_Icefly updates with "Volunteers in NYC and Orlando have completed step 1 of 2." At this point the two city names are crossed out and no longer underlined nor clickable.

-Step two of the drop involved taking the key to a second drop point provided by the contact number and unlocking a large crate labeled "Human Preservation Project." Inside the crate is a single large mechanical icefly mounted inside a scifi-styled glass (?) and metal jar.

-@Mission_Icefly updates with "NYC and Orlando complete." The city names are now blue and accompanied with the name of the receiving player in brackets. The Mission Icefly flickr also updates with pictures of the players unlocking the crates and/or holding their iceflies. [I kinda quit checking source sites from here on while making this writeup, so feel free to correct stuff. It's late, shush. XD;]

-missionicefly.com/rescue/ updates with a video that's incredibly laden with static both visually and acoustically. [I've forgotten whether this first appeared after the first drop(s), or if it was always available right off the bat. Halp?]

-The next set of cities, Boston, Chicago, and Nashville, have available .pdfs. Noticeable patterns appear here, such as:
City batches go in a 2, 3, 2, 3... pattern, only deviating towards the end.
New city batches become available roughly on the hour, with seven batches total. [confirmation plz?]
Batches seem to move from east to west, beginning on the Atlantic seaboard and ending in Los Angeles.
Drops run in the same pattern: part one contains an envelope, and part two the prize. Each are in different locations.
City names are initially grayed out, then white hyperlinks (which lead to .pdfs) when the drop is ready, then crossed out when part one is completed, then blue with a player's screen name when part two is completed.
With each completed city, the video at the top of the page clears a little.
The official flickr updates with pictures of the first person/team at each crate drop with their brand new iceflies.

-After a long, stressful, and exiting day with many shenanigans (what the hell Nashville/Portland; our man in Vegas is a magician; .pdf witchcraft with Dallas and Denver; official Twitter re-tweets a player (and people went WHUT over that); chat clients more chaotic than a toy store on Black Friday), all drops are successfully recovered. And there was much rejoicing.

-@Mission_Icefly writes "Reports are in that LA has been picked up. Please stand by."

Notsofast- the night's not over yet.

-@Mission_Icefly: "NOW"

-missionicefly.com/rescue/ video is now complete. Although still jumpy and messy in some places, it is watchable. At the end of the video we are given a very brief glimpse of a URL. Some fast-working players manage to get a still frame: SURVIVALCODE.COM/THEGENESIS/

-Pasting the above URL into the address bar sends the player to a much clearer and more coherent version of the video seen on missionicefly.com/rescue/ . The end of the video sends the player to a page depicting a very icy mountainous landscape. Clicking the image will direct to a second landscape presumably in the same area; a door is set at the base of the mountain, an icefly zooms across the open space between the player and the door, and the monologue continues briefly. Clicking the image again will put the player at the door, and clicking yet again will take the player to a closeup of the bright red panel set in the wall. Yes, a second countdown- one that expires fourteen days after the original on missionicefly.com, right down to the hour.

-Clicking the countdown brings the player to a login screen similar to the one previously seen on TSN. This page notes that "log files" have been added to the player's inventory.

-Logging in brings the player to a "Logged In" screen on the survivalcode site. This is followed by three links: "Back to Home," "View Your Profile," and "Visit Testing Facility."

-At the moment, the option "Visit Testing Facility" merely cycles back to the video seen on survivalcode.com/thegenesis/ and does nothing further.

-"Back to Home" takes the player to a sort of home page, featuring the drilling machine seen in the video as well as an icefly silhouette and the words "DISCOVERY BEGINS NOW." Links abound. Players can:
View their profile.
Logout.
Re-watch the /thegenesis/ video.
Return to TSN.
View a new video that features John Locke speaking to you and only you, baby.
A button labeled "Game Code Activation" is marked as "Coming Soon." It isn't clickable, but I do note that I get the little spinny wheely loader of doom when I hover my mouse over it- and only while it's over the button.

-"View Your Profile" (and also clicking your screenname on the home page) will take players to their profile. Three boxes are found here: Profile, Achievements & Commendations, and Log Files.
The Profile box features the player's screen name, Preservation Code, Join Date, Sense Print, and apparently the middle portion of a QR code (which will not scan properly, being incomplete and all).
Achievements & Commendations is fairly self explanatory; it appears that simply registering and creating an ID Badge will award the player with "Enlist In The Cause" (flavor text: Registered your account) and "Commitment Credentials" (flavor text: Created your badge ID).
Log Files appear to essentially be story-related comic pages. Players start out with a single log of five pages.

-Some enterprising players discovered a website for Traelek Institute after seeing the name featured in one of the log pages. The Institute's page seems fairly simple, with only a short blurb and phone number. Calling this number will result in an automated answer from the Institute.
[transcript goes here]

-Following the voice mail's advice, the Institute's original URL is appended with four words used in the association "test" given. Each of these yields a new web page:
An image of a gold ring.
A newspaper clipping featuring a child apparently having had burned down his parents' house.
Some pages out of a sketch book- the ones seen drawn by the red headed girl in the video. They can be cycled through if the player clicks on them.
A brochure for a military academy directed at teens.

-More on the Institute's pone number: originally given the option to leave a message immediately after the prerecorded schpiel ends, a short time later players can leave messages tagged as "urgent," "confidential," or both. Players can also try contacting an extension number by following the main number with a *, or ** and they can try a PIN for a main extension. It is discovered that players can leave messages for a "representative" by dialing in *[date of the fire from the newspaper article]#0 ; varying reports make it uncertain what portion, if any or all, of this extension allow for contact with this representative.

-Meanwhile, one of the lucky ground troops who came away with an icefly reported sudden flashing from the insect after leaving it plugged in for a while. Believing the flashing pattern to possibly be Morse, he shared his findings with the community. At this point in time consensus is that the light signs out survivalcode.com . Reports of similar flashings have come in, but nothing new has been recorded.

I renamed the thread as 'introduction' is sometimes used here asking people introduce themselves to everyone Smile Summary seems more appropriate *shrug*

Looks like you missed the first drop and the Internet-related stuff that happened immediately after. The next event looks like it'll be a little less than two weeks from now, so hopefully you'll be around for that!

A transcript of the Traelek Institute phone message when you call the number. From LINK:

"Thank you for calling the Traelek Institute, celebrating its
25th year of operations. Please listen to a word association quiz
that we issue to new students upon matriculation: DECOY. ASCENT.
BLAMELESS. MISGUIDED. What do these terms illicit in your mind's
eye? There are no correct answers, only questions. At the Trealek
Institute, we believe that the pursuit of sensory data is its own
reward, so check back at our website if you have any fresh impulses
as a result of the quiz you just sampled. Goodbye." [beep]

The extensions have been listed in a number of places, all(?) of which link to seemingly unrelated audio clips/voicemail options.

Good news - the wiki is up and running!

It's in desperate need of content however, though I've added a lot of base content (a bunch of the timeline and base content for current pages).

If you're not good with wikis, but you have a lot of data in your brain, no worried, go and add it to the pages anyway! If you're good with wikis (especially other wikibruce wikis), your help will be much appreciated in populating and editing the pages, to help keep them clean and pleasing to read Wink

So, the wiki off to a decent start I think, but yeah, definitely needs content. Go nuts!
