Just to add a few things:
Firstly, there is a document attached that has the same contents as the email. Secondly,

Some of the letters are highlighted in the message. I added the highlighting above. In order they are f a I l p r a y. That might be a playfair cipher with the parentheses being the key but that's a wild guess at the moment. I'll take a look at the letters shortly.

Damn it! I want to go look up Sidney Keyes on Wikipedia, but it's blacked out today protesting that damn proposal. I wonder if choosing Sidney Keyes as the author wasn't just random. I'll see if I can come up with anything.

You can always put m. instead of en. in front to get the mobile version of Wikipedia - http://m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sidney_Keyes. There are other ways but that's the easiest. Also, I agree that Keyes is probably the important part. Smile

Keyes may refer to the fact that the
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
text right after it may be the key
, or the fact that
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
the poem contains what may be the name of the cipher to use.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
I've been looking at the playfair cypher, and I'm unsure how to get the possible key or the text to fit into it. The text isn't broken up so that you can tell easily tell if it's say, 12 12 14, or 1 21 21 4, or 12 1 2 1 4. I did notice that some of the spaces between number groups in the attachment where double spaces and some were single spaces, though.

The hidden part of the code works out to be

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
(8182313222 16222228) broken up as 8.18.23.13.22.2 16.22.2.22.8 will substitute into SIDNEY KEYES. I tried to break up the other blocks of code the same way but wasn't able to come up with anything.

Also is there anything to the name in the header of the email? It shows that the email is from כ ˩

EDIT: The key for the first string of numbers 8182313222 16222228 is
ZYXWVU... = 1,2,3,4,5,6...

I've participated in a few ARGs over the years but generally am terrible at ciphers. Anyone willing to give me a crash-course on ciphers? How to figure out what type it is, & how to go about solving?

Edit: Or point me towards a good starting place?

Thanks in advance.

LeHommeSuspendu -

Here are a couple of sites where you can enter info for different types of codes and ciphers to be decoded.

http://rumkin.com/tools/cipher/

http://www.braingle.com/brainteasers/codes/index.php

Sometimes the problem is in knowing what info to enter.

LatentMoths figured out how to break up the strings of numbers into the correct units to match numbers to letters according to their alphabetical order. Adm_BlackCat posted that this code followed a simple pattern of reversing the alphabet with the numerical order (1=Z, 26=A) for the one part of the message.

The tricky part for the rest of the message is figuring how to break up the number strings into individual letter units. Would 1224 be 1 - 2 - 2 - 4 or 12 - 2 - 4 or 12 - 24 ... etc. ? And the key for the second part of the message could be different from the one in parentheses. If it's a simple key, using letter frequencies and just filling in and going by trial and error until it works might be all you need. Sometimes you have to have a keyword and put it and the other info into a decoder. Sometimes the hardest part is figuring what type of code/cipher it is.

I don't know if this is what you were asking for, but I hope it helps.

EDIT: Also (if you haven't already seen it) unfiction has this tool resource page that can be helpful.

I dont have the time right now but if it is infact a playfair cipher using reverse alphabet->number scheme it will take a while to decode. If someone has the time here are some info that might help you and for LeHommeSuspendu:

Maybe this will help

I took the numbers from the bottom of the email and split them up so that no number over 26 was present in a given pair. I replaced the spaces with '_' characters and there were also no-break spaces that I replaced with '-'. It's possible that these are 3 different ciphers since the single(?) character in the first paragraph is 21 and in the 3rd paragraph is 19. I've tried some combinations in a playfair cipher with SIDNEYKEYES as the key but nothing has magically appeared yet. I'll try again later but thought this might help people in the mean time.
