When I asked Pietro whom his favorite philosopher was he replied with Descartes's Dualism. This seems more relevant now rather than it being used as a hint towards the puzzle.

Glad. However, the solution has now been submitted - the answer will not be posted for a day though, to allow others to also try their hand, and to show me those who have determination [also to allow for 'seconds' - when rtanslated, you will see what I mean...]

I'm not a chess player, quite frankly I'm terrible at it, but I do like doing research. And, researching chess seconds,

Seconds are used in the context of a one-on-one match at classical time controls. Main functions:

1. Research opponent
2. Prepare opening repertoire
3. Adjournment analysis (no longer relevant to chess, but may be relevant to the arg): http://blog.chess.com/SonofPearl/the-lost-art-of-adjournments

It should also be noted that in classical time controls, there is a set time frame for each person to go. Which might explain why he is on shortly for some moments, and on longer for others.
