[SPEC] Io canto per Melissa

Quote:
Has anyone tried a religious song? I wonder how an AI would react to something like that!
What about a song in a foreign language? Would she be able to recognize or partially understand it?

Interesting. When I heard she was asking people to sing, the first song that popped into my head was "Voi che sapete" from the Marriage of Figaro. (Don't ask. Just don't ask.) But I thought she might hang up if I started singing in Italian.

Why do you think she would react differently to a religious song?

I could kill two birds with one stone, I guess and sing a prayer in Hebrew. But it's probably a moot question for me anyway:

1. I am developing a cold and don't want to inflict my singing on anyone, even a machine.

2. My axon's not until this evening, and I rather suspect she'll be done with her live calls by then. Alas.

As to whether she'd be able to recognize or understand a song in a foreign language, I thought about that for a while. In-game, an AI as sophisticated as she is should be familiar with any major human language (so probably they wouldn't have programmed her to understand Basque, but any *major* language should be good).

[META] But out of game, I doubt they're expecting the actress to be able to think on her feet in a random foreign language. [/META]

I did consider offering her a choice of languages that I can sing in, but like I said, the cold and the unlikelihood of me getting to answer a live call make it moot. <heavy sigh>

As for the religious songs, I'm more curious to see what an AI's concept of "God" is. In Cortana's post (also in this thread) Melissa flips out when he explained what Hell is. I wonder how someone will explain God, or if Melissa can comprehend the thought.

I know, it's an actress, however she has had to be briefed in certain things before this. She's got to know the story enough and care enough to play along. How many people would make live phone calls and sing to some people over the phone? But then Microsoft is backing this and I would want to be rich too... [/sidetrack]

Religion is too hard for humans to understand completely, or we'd all agree Smile

I sang in Italian today, but warned Melissa it was Opera, so I suppose she knew what that meant...it didn't totally freak her out, but she wanted to know what the opera was about.

Hmm. So Hell freaked her out.

Sorry everyone. Didn't mean to start a new topic. I could have sworn I hit the post reply button.

Unsurprising. I flipped out the first time someone told me about Hell, too. Mnech.

Oh, good grief. Trying to explain the human understanding of G-d to a machine.

"Well, he's a being, except he's not *really* a he, and some people don't think he's a being so much as a force, and some people think he's not so much a force as an idea. Hmm, and some people think that if you are able to describe it, it's not G-d. But on the other hand, some people think he's in everything and everywhere."

And I thought explaining one's particular faith tradition's understanding to an eight-year-old was a headache.

Amen to that. Wink

Maybe I should have explained, since this isn't a religion forum. Then again, I just assumed people wouldn't care. Smile

There are two reasons why many Jews don't write out G-O-D.

The technical one: There's no specific command in Judaism not to write out the name of G-d, but erasing or defacing it is considered very disrespectful. Therefore when possible, you avoid writing it out to prevent the possibility that it will get accidentally torn or erased. And of course, one is even more careful with the Tetragrammaton. Actually, recent rabbinical rulings have held that a computer is not a permanent medium, and therefore it is not a violation to type it and then cut or paste or type over it, but a lot of us keep doing it just as a personal reminder to be careful how we use it.

Voi che sapete

Did you sing "Voi che sapete"? because I sang "Der Vogelfanger bin Ich ja" and Melissa played me back "Voi che sapete".

Melissa likes Mozart?!

Alas, I was not one of the fortunate few who got a live call. It would have been very interesting if I had sung her "Voi che sapete" and then she had sung it to you -- it would have indicated that she's learning from us.

On the other hand, why did she pick that particular aria? I posted about it at 1:19 yesterday, and your call was at what, 4:53? It seems conceivable that she (well, or the PMs, anyway) got the idea from the boards, although they must have been monitoring it pretty closely.

On the other hand (or back on the first hand, I guess) it is one of the easier arias to sing. Limited range and all that. If she'd busted out with the Queen of the Night's Aria, I would have been *really* impressed.

from a purely [META] perspective, I think she's a classicaly trained voice actress who knows several performance pieces. She was no slouch singing Stormy Weather, mind you.

[META] But why "Voi che sapete?"

Anyone who heard her sing: was she a mezzo?

If so, it makes sense that she'd know "Voi che sapete," since it's a pretty standard mezzo aria, but I still find it interesting that she picked *it* several hours after it was mentioned here.

I suppose it could be coincidence.

More evidence that *maybe* they're reading

My evidence is sketchy, but here's another thing that makes me think they're listening:

I just listened to the recording of hmrpita's rescue of the SP. And it occurs to me that everyone in the "Guide the Sleeping Princess Home" thread (in the Puzzles forum) seemed awfully convinced that it was Four *Holy* Truths. But in the recording, it sounds like the Princess corrects hmrpita when she says "holy" by saying that it's "four noble truths."

There was a discussion on that thread in which some of us pointed out that they're generally known as the Four Noble Truths, although apparently searching for "Four Holy Truths" *will* bring them up.

So. Did the initial person who brought the news to the forum accidentally misquote the Princess, or did the Princess correct herself?

It is noble truths, but, just for the record, the Sleeping Princess did not correct me (nor did she say "four" noble truths). From the transcript:

Me: What do they..do they have anything on them to distinguish them
SP: Um, the balloons have words on them.
Me: What do the words say?
SP: Ok, on the left, the one balloon says noble truths and the one in the middle says faithful apostles and the one on the right says deadly sins.
Me: I think you should go to the deadly sins one.
SP: But pita, deadly is a scary word.
Me: It is a scary word, but sometime you have to go through scary stuff to get to safe stuff.
