[Halo 2] 2401 Penitent Tangent [tiny spoiler] EDIT: Tiny spoiler for those not through campaign yet. Nothing really unexpected, though.
I was using Trillian, and everyone's favorite red Monitor came up in a conversation.
The built in wiki entry for it? HUGE:

2401 Penitent Tangent is the "Monitor" of Delta Halo.
Like 343 Guilty Spark, but red.

yeah, yeah.
I guess i was just bored and easily amused.
It was my first day trying Trillian, and I didn't know it linked to wiki info.
Let alone a wiki with an ungodly amount of Halo knowledge.

Oh, god! I know! Trillian 3.0 is awsome! First day I had it, my conversations were interjected with
"Did you know that (stuff you don't care about, but trillian just let me find out)?"

I apologize for my earlier moment of ignorance. I had not yet reached the part of the single-player campaign where I met 2401 PT. I have now reached that part, and all I can say is, "What did the Gravemind actually DO to the Prophet? It looks like the Prophet has been morphed INSIDE one of Gravemind's tentacles!"
So, I should get this Trillian 3.0 thingie?

Please forgive my ignorance -- what is Trillian?

It's an instant messaging service that dwarfs other IM services in the same way that gmail trumps other email services.
This avatar clearly will not do.

actually, it's not a service, it's a program that piggy backs on all the other IM services. ie, you can setup your icq, yim, msn, accounts, and more... trillian will log you in to all of them simultaneously, so you don't have to run each individual service's client... memory saver. The drawback is you don't necessarily get the full functionality of certain services... for example, trillian users through MSN don't display an icon picture in the chat window. That's just one of a number of drawbacks. Service specific proprietary features are likely not to be included ... at least as long as they are un'hacked', or illegal to include in the trillian application. I've always been wondering why trillian hasn't yet included the ability to add the profile icons in chat windows... *shrug*

That's what it looked liked to me. It also somewhat reminded of what happened to Captain Keyes on the bridge of that damaged Covenant Cruiser in the first Halo.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Gravemind is a Flood creature made up of thousands of, well, dead hosts. The prophet of Regret is just the most recent of them all.
Penitent Tangent looked as though the Gravemind just had a good grip on him, so he couldn't just fly away.

Thank you. That clears up many of my questions.
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
I'm fairly close to the end of the game; I've almost finished with the Brute encampment. Gotta tell you, if the Covenant is broken at the end of this game, I will see no reason for a Halo 3. However, if there is a significant Covenant force sans Brutes left, then I'll be anxiously awaiting some sort of resolution. I'll let you know when I'm on Live.

Opened Halo2 at Christmas (after buying it for myself, and proud of my ability to prolong anticipation), finished on New Year's Day. I think I'll go back and pay attention to the story more. At least I can read all the spoilers now. Maybe I can trade up to Special Edition?
Anyway. Something small and hardly worth thinking about, after reading Halo2 conjecture on rpg.net.
Guilty Spark, 343 = 7^(4-1) on Halo 04
Pentient Tangent, 2401 = 7^(5-1) on Halo 05
So if Bungie keep up the pattern for 7 halos, we'd expect the number of the Monitor to correspond to the number of the Installation, from the set ( 1, 7, 49, 343, 2401, 16807, 117649, 823543).
EDIT: I trout myself and point at thebruce http://forums.unfiction.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=117007#117007
