[TRIVIA] Azad Park

Azad (from the Sentinel news bit) is the name of a society in the book The Player of Games. The society is a lot like the Perplex City society, in that status is determined by success at a very complicated intellectual game.

Currently reading that book Wink

I have to say though that all of the games and ideals of the Perplex City inhabitants reminds me a lot of the 'Culture' from Iain M Banks books.

Zzedar: In what article in the Perplex City Sentinel is Azad Park mentioned? I checked every section of the Sentinel, but I just can't find it! Shocked Embarassed Laughing Question

It's not there anymore. You'll have to check the wiki mirror; it's under "More News In Brief."

What a great reference. Maybe someone from earth will get to play Perplex City's game, and see how well we fare.

Although that's probably reaching considering it's just one name so far. But it would be really cool.

More likely, we'll all play it collectively.

I bet you're right, and that's why the Perplexians are such snots -- we're supposed to have fun deflating them. "Hey, Cahill -- you know we thought hyperspheres around you, right? Yeah, just wanted to make sure you knew."

Just had a look at Adrian Hon's blog. I one of his favorite authors is indeed Iain M Banks. You can sort of tell that Iain Banks was an influence, especially with the whole puzzle society and cognitive enhancers. Just read Player of Games.

Excession rules, especially in it's description of stuff like OCPs, and pretty much everything the Grey Area does. Player of Games is cool, but if you're looking for a read where you need to make a serious effort to keep on top of the story then Use of Weapons will make your brain work hard.

Use of weapons is a good thinking book, after reading the last couple of pages I spent the rest of the day rethinking the whole novel.

Anyway, just some more trivia as I'm reading the 'Player of Games'. Turns out Azad is a game they play on a planet called Azad. There is no distinction between the game and real life, and if you are good at the game of Azad you wil be more likely to get a better job etc.. ,the winner of the game as a whole governs the planet. A random quote:

Quote:
' cause and effect are not perfectly polorised here; the set-up assumes that the game and life are the same thing, and such is the pervasive nature of the idea of the game within the society that just by believing that, they make it so. It becomes true; it is willed into actuality. Azad - the game - would appear to be the force that holds it together.

Page 76. err that ends my useless quote of the day Confused

I've been looking everywhere for Consider Phlebas... Public libraries suck for finding sci-fi books.

I'm starting to think that the game (in PPC) and the Cube are related in some way. I'm sure a lot of things are different in PPC just for the hell of it, but there must be a reason that the game is so important. Azad was even a religion -- and look at the cubists. But this is all wild spec.

I really want to play the game though.
