failure...AGAIN!

i've just returned from my FOURTH trip out to the Knoxville axon (smarter 13:57 PDT). each day i'm trying something new. none of us can seem to find this thing. payphone-directory lists 8 phones at the coordinate... but after carefully narrowing it down day-by-day, i find that in reality there are only 2. Those, however, are definitely not ringing.

But thats not why i'm posting... i'm posting because i've been trying so hard to get to this mystery phone, for an axon thats already gone hot, that i feel like i should pretend i've accomplished something.

so here is a picture of me, in the rain, pretending to answer the phone... a phone that doesn't even seem to be the correct one. seeing it makes me feel like i've succeeded! Very Happy

edit: just returned from another trip out... i had updated payphone-directory with the correct information about the phones in the area. the coordinate never changed but i thought maybe they corrected the number. there were actually some new people out there today. very nice guys! its unfortunate that there is so much interest in the one knoxville axon and the PMs didn't get it working... and now we're left out of the last round. but they kept the Cookeville, TN axon.... which i don't think has ever been picked up in any round.... sucks. much time wasted.

Video - The Axon at the End of the Road

Because after all, it's just a game, and it's supposed to be fun, Cortana and I made a video of our trip out to Round Hill, VA (the Appalachian Trail) for the 9:45 axon for _winning_ located at coords 39.1879, -77.7977. The resulting short movie clip is entitled, "The Axon at the End of the Road."

We hope you enjoy watching it as much as we enjoyed making it.

When I met with Ariock and hmrpita last week, they said the best way thing to tell someone you want to use that payphone is "it's for a scavenger hunt". Apparently people tend to be more reluctant about lending you the payphone, and tend to want to help.

Or, do like me, and when someone starts to walk up, say "These phones don't work."

It's amazing how well that works, lol.

I answered a phone in my college's bookstore today. It was right next to the line where you sell your old books back and there were a ton of girls waiting in line. They all looked at me and my friend as if we were the biggest freaks in the world. I got it though. You should have seen the looks on their faces when I answered a ringing payphone after hanging around there for 15 minutes.

Denver (Big_dog)'s

Arghh that made me mad I got the first one because the are at the same place and yes they have been switching some of the payphones around. I was in the process of getting the first call when another phone rings about 8 feet away. I look at my watch it says 7:47 I'm like oh crap I wish I had another person 4 rings just got to the continue part (repeat or continue) Continue. Ring 5 and from What I read it only rings 5 times. I pick it up just incase nothing well at least I tried.

Comatas Axon Question by Melissa in MP3

I made a recording on Tuesday of Melissa asking what the Captain's last name is, through whichever wav it was. Since the wav is now available, but I have not seen her intro speech anywhere, I am posting it here now.

Excellent. Transcript already here, but .mp3 much better. Mr. Green

Edit to fix totally erroneous link

A much belated nod to Derek B, who got the Carousel axon on the DC Mall the very first week....

We had a great time in Berkeley today, with only a few hiccups. The first phone of the morning didn't ring (though it rang later in the day and we enhottenated it). Another phone was located in the library, which was closed. It'll be open in time to get the phone tomorrow though. And there was another phone that didn't ring.

All the foibles were made up for by the last calls of the day. There were new coordinates listed for us that didn't match up with any that we had previously gotten, but they were in the same area as 2 other sets of coords we had recieved, and there were lots of payphones in the vicinity. We weren't really sure what to expect, as there were 2 calls listed coming to this set of coordinates, and the second call was only 2 minutes after the first.

On our walk down to the corner of Telegraph and Channing, our roving band of beekeepers became larger as MissSphinx spotted us and joined in. We had reached the critical size where we could have a person monitoring each phone in the area and one person standing on the corner of the intersection, ready to wave us all to the phone that rang. Suddenly we were all waved over to a pair of phones that we had already answered earlier in the day. This phone had apparently been assigned another set of coordinates, and Melissa had called it herself.

While we were talking to Melissa, the other phone rang, and it was a recording. Lt. Adam picked it up and was listening to it, when Melissa decided she wanted to talk to him, and wasn't taking "he's on the other line" for an answer.

It was a lot of fun, since we had been hoping all day for a live call, and we had no clue what was going on with the last 2 calls. It was a great end to the day's adventure.

There's a part of UCI called "Middle Earth Housing". Essentually, groups of dorms.

Terribly amusing to walk past "Helm's Deep RESCOMP" (With mailboxes for Hobbiton, Murkwood, Lorian, Rivendell, Shire, and more!)

My second phone of the day was at the "Brandywine Commons Student Center"...

So I took off my shoes.

Ah, memories.

The Berkeley Library (15:59) was hilarious. The GPS coords put us in the middle of a 1 block long street. On one end was a phone stand with 2 phones, and on the other, we found 2 more in the entrance to the public library. We had figured that the ones outside were more likely, so we had most of the group at those, then one person at the phones in the library, and 2 relay people who would wave us in if it was the library, or wave him in if it were the other ones.

From the point of view of the security guard: A girl went in, looked at the phones, called each one and hung up, then walked out. A few minutes later, a guy walked in and stood at the phones watching them. Suddenly the phone rings, he waves out the front window, then listens intently. 30 seconds later, 10 people run in the front door of the library and congregate around the phone, saying "repeat" and passing it off to each other.

Eventually someone explained the situation to him, and also to 2 random guys who showed up who were perplexed by the group of us huddled around the phone saying "what does it mean?" and talking about the message.

Unfortunately, my picture of the look on the security guard's face is too blurry to really do it justice. I didn't zoom in, and my exposure time was set way too long.

By the way, the redhead with us was Jane, who played Dana. The tall dude with the black hair was Kiyash, the head axon scout. You can see them in the picture Stitch posted.
