The Phil, Phact or Phiction?

The Phil is a great idea, and I'll be using it more often than I should. Phact!

The Phil? Are you kidding me? I'd rather stab out my own eyeballs with a spork than use that term. Phiction!

The Phil

I submit for your approval/disproval: "The Phil"

First showing up by yours truly in the I Love Bees/Haunted Apiary, Let Op! ARG, this term refers to a spreadsheet or other form of organizational charting system that mobilizes players to perform real-world tasks as characters. In the case of ILB, The Phil organized players to get to payphones at specific coordinates at specific times of the day to answer phone calls.

While there haven't been many ARGs requiring multiple player real-life interaction, I somehow have a feeling that the tool will be used again.

The Phil is the name, and therefore must always be called The Phil. Proper usage would include, but would not be limited to sentences such as these:

"The Phil has been updated, please check it or add your name under the appropriate slots"

"Dorkmaster, would you mind creating a The Phil for the Clifford the Dog ARG?"

"My The Phil is better than your The Phil!"

etc... "The" should not be separated from the term "Phil", thus creating great sentences irreverant to centuries of the English language, while also making a clear distinction from any entity actually named Phil.

The Phil can be a simple spreadsheet file, a web document, or some other organizational tool, but it must include multiple (defined in this instance as 10 or more people) players and be used in a way to organize real-life interactions, be it live people, phone calls, or even meetings between players (as long as the purpose is to further an ARG)

So there you have it... The Phil. Whaddya think?

Curious, where did the term "The Phil" derive from?

Thanks for your interest, Crisko! The Phil originated with ILB (or the Haunted Apiary, Let Op!). It was designed to help coordinate the first round (and successive rounds) of payphones being answered, by linking times, places, and players to ensure that each phone was answered. While it didn't get that done completely, (anyone volunteer for the middle of the atlantic ocean? Bueller?) I personally feel that it did let people know where they could be best used, and I feel that it helped greatly to the initial success of the game, as many of the phones were answered.

Anyway, that's the origin, and I was the one who coined the term. However, I take more pride in the fact that it was adopted, than with the genesis of the term. (But I figured what the heck, try to get it immortalized in the glossary.) It may or may not be too specific for glossary status, but I figured it's worth seeing the merits and demerits of such a try. Hence, the poll and the thread. So thanks for your input, and I am very curious to see the results. Have a good one!

Here's the original reference to the spreadsheet, with the term "The Phil" coming later in the same thread. (The spreadsheet is now not attached anymore, but you can see the post immediately after this, is where it first made its appearance.)

Sounds good to me. Its original and kind of catchy.

... but why 'The Phil'? Why not 'The Bob'?

I actually considered the Bob, but it was too generic. I figured this way, it was a bit off, and more to the point, specific. It was fun to say "I'll add you to The Phil", cuz everyone instantly knew what it meant... I really don't expect this to become canon or anything, but I think it would be cool to consider it, is all.. Thanks for your interest, regardless!
