Yes. Often, these substitution ciphers were originally done on paper. Here are two good links: http://www.cryptogram.org/cdb/aca.info/aca.and.you/chap08.html and the Challenger's Handbook at http://www.caesum.com/.
I actually solved the previous Vigenere cipher by hand.

I don't think it's a seriated playfair cipher because in many ways of stacking the letters, you get pairs of double letters, and that doesn't happen with this kind of cipher. The cipher could still be the regular playfair form, though.

Nice Java program, shame I don't have a answer yet.
But I am fairly sure that the number is important, on the site it says the info? attachment is 'more from jerry, last month' this would put the date at 03/05.

OK guys we need to hurry:
Quote:
Russell unfic: Hi Walter, Im one of your friends working on the codes. How are you? I have emailed you a few times but havent heard back.
hamilw: things are not going well...
Russell unfic: why? anything I can help with...
hamilw: basically I cannot go back to my apartment and that is where I left the flash drive I stored the complex information on
Russell unfic: Is there anyway of getting a friend to go there? Who is back at the apartment?
hamilw: I am not sure who they are, but looks like the same van from the other day....
hamilw: They are parked about 1 block South
Russell unfic: Have you met with Jerry yet?
hamilw: I only received a text message from him this morning....at least I think it was from him..
hamilw: hold on....
Russell unfic: ok
hamilw: at any rate it was a short text message...
hamilw: do you want it?
Russell unfic: of course, it might hold important info
hamilw: I am not too sure .. here it is...
hamilw: 2 3 5 6 7 4 1 8
hamilw: that is it...
Russell unfic: Ok we will work on it, Where are you staying is it somewhere safe?
hamilw: i am leaving the NY area right now...
Russell unfic: without the drive?
hamilw: may not have a chance to message until I get ...somewhere else
hamilw: drive will have to wait...
Russell unfic: do you have an email/ phone or another way we can contact you?
hamilw: maybe my sister can get in ... I will have to see..
Russell unfic: be careful though, she might be intercepted
hamilw: Van coming my way use the text message...
hamilw signed off at 12:10:28 AM.
This could be the key code I was needing earlier.
Yay My first in game chat with a character!
I would have gone with an AMSCO cipher but there arent enough letters for it to work.

If 041005 is a date, then the message could be announcing some event or meeting on that date.

Notice that in "2 3 5 6 7 4 1 8", there are 8 non-repeating numbers, and there are 8 groups in that cipher. Probably a coincidence.

There are no such thing as coincidences!
Also there are 32 letters, 4 * 8.
Ok I have tried a Complete Columnar Transposition and an incomplete one but not having much luck.

Heh, I really hope that this is part of the game, and that blog site didn't actually kick them off. Either way, I think we need to find something else to advance in the story.

Are there any sort of ciphers that use numeric keys? I've tried every cipher i can think of, but without the proper keys they are all useless. The number he gave us is obviously the key to solve the puzzle. I just don't know how to use it.

Are there any other ARG forums out there where people might have solved it already?
