I think it has something to do with
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
time:
shake - unit of time, nuclear
face - clock
eye - "I've been aware of the time passing by
They say in the end it's the wink of an eye" - Rocky Horror Picture Show
work - "work expands to fill the available time" or something along these lines - Murphy's Law
length - ?
head - ?
fly - time flies when you are having fun!

Maybe each word has a missing letter wgich spells a word/sequence of letters.
Shake (Shaken?)
Face Farce
Eye (Eyre?)
Work (Works?)
Length (Lengthy?)
Head Heard
Fly Flay
I know this is just a simple solution but hey

If it what's not there that's important, how about looking at the letters of the alphabet not in that list of words
This was my immediate thought upon reading the riddle. Could that string of letters be the answer? Are we over thinking it? I would believe Violet could/should pick that one up on her own if that were the case, however.
The problem with not having the ability to test theories is that one of our theories could be correct - so maybe the answer is obvious when you actually know it - eh - like most riddles, I suppose.

Yeah, that's the difficult element here. I believe we'll eventually come up with several solutions, but we have no way of knowing which is right, since this problem can be interpreted in many ways :/

Word association If it is word association some possibilities are
shake about
about face
eye patch
patch work at
at length
If it is is along those lines I'd guess the word is alpaca (a from about, p from patch etc.), mainly because of the reference in Violet's previous post to cute lambs.

they can all be nouns, if that helps

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
I might be wrong, as usual, but absent can mean the same as fly if both are verbs

Its pretty unlikely but as far as I can see "that which is absent which must be sought" is
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
the solution

My guess:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
the mind, as in it's absent from the list. therefore it's absent-minded. i don't know, some kind of pun in that general sense maybe.
But I might be wrong.

Well whenever we figure this thing out we can email her at violetSPLAT quirkyacuity.com (trout away if we already knew this). Just got an autoreply from her:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Thanks for your email. I would reply to it, honestly, only I can't
right now because I'm probably out working in the library.
Or playing poker.
Or drowning my sorrows after losing big.
Or celebrating after winning big.
Or investigating some part of the city I haven't seen before.
Or taking in a show.
Or working on a puzzle.
Or finally mastering the art of omelette-making.
Or digging up bits of stone in Catbite and getting overexcited about
their significance.
Or windsurfing in the bay.
Or buying shoes.
Or reading a novel.
Or having a picnic in the park.
Or trying to get back that great pair of boots my sister "borrowed"
six months ago.
Or finding new words to share.
Or feeding my fish.
Or hiking.
Or giving unfortunate interviews and getting into trouble with my dad.
Or planting trees on public property.
Or confusing the person next to me.
Or making a triangular table.
Or taking a train out to the plains.
Or eating at Conundra.
Or writing autoreply for my email.
I had asked her a couple of questions about Gyvann...but alas, it appears i wont be getting an answer.

We did already know, but only just! I think the problem will be agreeing on the answerat this rate, maybe we should just email loads of different answers to Violet, then she can make up her own mind!

Actually, Y is sometimes a vowel - case in point, the word "fly" (where it sounds like a long I).
