 		I think it has something to do with

shake - unit of time, nuclear
face - clock

work - "work expands to fill the available time" or something along these lines - Murphy's Law

length - ?

head - ?

fly - time flies when you are having fun!

 		Maybe each word has a missing letter wgich spells a word/sequence of letters.

Shake (Shaken?)
Face Farce
Eye (Eyre?)
Work (Works?)
Length (Lengthy?)
Head Heard
Fly Flay

I know this is just a simple solution but hey

This was my immediate thought upon reading the riddle. Could that string of letters be the answer? Are we over thinking it? I would believe Violet could/should pick that one up on her own if that were the case, however.

The problem with not having the ability to test theories is that one of our theories could be correct - so maybe the answer is obvious when you actually know it - eh - like most riddles, I suppose.

 		Yeah, that's the difficult element here. I believe we'll eventually come up with several solutions, but we have no way of knowing which is right, since this problem can be interpreted in many ways :/

If it is word association some possibilities are

shake about
about face
eye patch
patch work at
at length

If it is is along those lines I'd guess the word is alpaca (a from about, p from patch etc.), mainly because of the reference in Violet's previous post to cute lambs.

Actually, Y is sometimes a vowel - case in point, the word "fly" (where it sounds like a long I).
