Any bets on who killed him? Making the assumption that it was murder? For some strange reason, I'm expecting:
Second To Last Maze:
SO I TELL YOU, THE ONE WHO KILLED ME WAS.
Last Maze:
SENTE KITEWAY.

Basing it for the operating system he did, it seems like Salk specifically wanted to communicate with us and did some cursory research and found an operating system that some of us (erm...one of us?) has access to.
Although, the nature of the game contradicts this. He specifically wanted you to physically move your machine (mine weighs a tonne, so luckily I have strong typing wrists...oh yeah but un-maccy). I think this might suggest that keys have something similar in-built as standard and he found an OS that could replicate this on Earth, so he didn't have to change his favourite puzzle format.

minds being sucked into key/net virtual reality - person seemingly in coma but very agitated at losing link to net (key) -- hmmm seems a little otherlandish to me

Just got to work ( we have macs here ) to have a look at the puzzle, but can't seem to get it to work.
I put the amstracker in the maze directory, executed it in the terminal - everything seems ok
I then went to run startmaze.pl and it then says that it can't find the amstracker??
Anyone got any ideas to where I'm going wrong?

The trick is to make sure the armstracker file is placed in another directory called 'maze' which is inside the first one. I've deleted the files now, but I'm pretty sure it's the same directory with the 'startmaze' file.
I encountered the same problem, moved armstracker ... got all excited as the Mac seemed to seriously think about doing something ... before telling me that I don't have the inertial sensors required. My Powerbook is only about 18 months old too.
Hope you have more luck.

If you don't have the inertial 'unit', check out Bri's file in Puzzles . He has transferred the inertial reference to keyboard controls.
Also, SteveC came up with a way of using Telnet to address the port to move the map (so you can play on a PC). He says he got up to level 6 using this (although i don't know how, it's quite maddening).

May I recommend that before asking about getting the maze to open/work, you check out this thread in Puzzles ? Quite a few people already gave very helpful tips with regards to that, and there is no need to repeat their efforts here. Let's please use this thread for discussion of Pietro and the new website, and move all the talk about the maze itself over there . Thanks

I had a strange, unfounded thought when reading this for the first time. I was goingtoo post it this morning (PST) but didn't because its 1) purely SPEC and 2) doesn't make a whole lot of sense. But it is still on my mind so I thought I'd thrwo it out there.
The first thing I thought when reading this article was that this is related in some way to the Djinn virus. Now I know this is reported as a key-specific virus but with his obsession for his key and all the messages that come from the maze made me think something has gotten through to his wetware.
Total utter speculation with no logic attached....but at least I feel better for getting it out of my system

this was my thought earlier -- re otherland where folks get trapped in alternate virtual reality while connected -- they appear to be in some kinda coma but get frantic if disconnected
i guess its a storyline that could occur in much cyber fiction tho

The situation would be even scarier if 'Djinn/Magic Lantern' *does* have something to do with backdoor military applications (although wouldn't that be another great plot element??!).
In truth, though, the big question hangs over whether a) Salk was 'got' to by someone deliberately in order to shut him up or b) Whether he stumbled upon something else independently...
It seems virtually certain that whatever secrets the Maze game will yield will lead us to clues that, in turn, implicate some further person/organisation etc.
Turning away from the actual solution to the puzzle, though, it's interesting to speculate as to why Salk needed/was forced to encode the clues in this way. Was he fearful of discovery? Was he incapable of communicating in any more straighforward way thanks to the deterioration of brain function?
It's all pretty odd...

an idea, since we *still* don't seem to be getting very far with completing any of our maze 6's... we are stuck in a maze. pietro is stuck in his coma. the only way he has been able to express himself and communicate has been through this maze program. maybe we're not gonna be able to find an exit to level 6 because pietro can't find an exit to his coma? perhaps this maze is what the inside of his head looks/feels like in his coma? and if so, considering pietro knows he's going to die when he 'awakes' what does that mean to our search for an exit?
on that matter, is there any significance that its level 6 that we're stuck on?
rach =)

Well there're six sides to a cube...erm and that's all I can think of.
I've been wondering whether there's any link to the other unsolved maze we have from the damn postcard? Has anyone come across Perplex City Postal Service slap bang in the middle of level six?

There's the Brotherhood of Six, of course...but the implication seemed to be that they were the good guys...?!
