We're all familiar with crossword puzzles, but good cross-number puzzles are more difficult to come by. This one has been adapted from the famous Little Pigley Farm puzzle, created by W. T. Williams and G. H. Savage.

You might like to know that 1 mile is 1760 yards, 1 rood is 1210 square yards, there are 20 shillings in £1 and the year is 1939. The land on which the rectangular farm stands is called Dog's Mead. Completing the puzzle will reveal the ultimate secret of Mrs Grooby's age (Farmer Dunk's mother-in-law)

1. Value of Dog's Mead in shillings per rood. (3 squares)
2. Square of Mrs Grooby's age. (4 squares)
3. Age of Mary, Farmer Dunk's daughter. (2 squares)
4. Value of Dog's Mead in Pounds. (3 squares)
6. Current age of Ted, son of Farmer Dunk, who in 1945 will be twice as old as his sister Mary. (2 squares)
7. Square of the width of Dog's Mead, in yards. (5 squares)
8. Number of minutes in which Farmer Dunk walks 11/3 times around Dog's Mead. (2 squares)
9. 10 Across divided by 10 down. (2 Squares)
10. See 9 down. (3 squares)
12. Sum of the digits of 10 vertical plus 1. (2 squares)
13. Number of years that Dog's Mead has been owned by the Dunk family. (3 squares)

1. Area of Dog's Mead in square yards. (5 squares)
5. Age of Martha, the aunt of Farmer Dunk. (2 Squares)
6. Difference between the length and breadth of Dog's Mead in yards. (2 squares)

8. Year in which the dunk family became owner of Dog's Mead. (4 squares)

The grid is 7x7

If no-one scanned this by tomorrow I'll see if I can whip up a little something to show you the positions ect.

I guess the first move is to work out from the clues given at the top the dimensions of the farm.

 		HAving sat down with pencil and paper, I'm pretty certain there are mis-prints on this one - given the spacings for 9 down and 10 across and down, the answers are physically impossible to fit in.... also, doing more complex maths relating the speed he walks and the area of the land, there's no answers that actually fit. Would love it if someone could prove me wrong, but I've got a bad feeling about this.

As a starter, for clue 15: there's only 4 speeds he can walk at: 1, 2, 3 or 4mph.

Hausam Amphitheatre

The Hausam Amphitheatre is a central part of Polygon Park and often hosts several performances a week in summer and spring. Seating is available for over 8000. A petition to add heating and an ultralight-weight dome (similar to that used at the Triple Wheel Stadium) for protection against the weather was started in 266 but narrowly defeated by the Preservationists.

I'll wait to see what anyobdy else gets for this one, but I'm quite certain now that it's actually not possible. If nobody proves me wrong I'll email in next week.

 		Langley, have only had a quick glance at this and see what you mean about the 9D = 10A/10D clues. However, surely it is possible to have zero as the first digit (or indeed first two?) That would also help with your spoiler, and note anyway that it does say "the cube".

Having now actually had a look at the card, I suspect you're right, and 9 and 10 down are round the wrong way or something. I've checked that against the question on the page Grizy linked to, and the question is fairly similar (but not identical!) with 9 and 10 slightly different. Want to work it out myself though!

I really don't think that you should be able to have zero as the first digit. It really wouldn't feel right. On the other hand that is the only way to resolve the 10A/10D issue.

I'm inclined to think there is a typo and it should be 10D/10A.

Can someone who has the card check if you get given a typo correction when you try to answer. I'm convinced something is wrong on this one.

 		There is a mistake, just solved it - 9 down should read: 10 down divided by 10 across.

Thanks for suggesting that. I had assumed 11/3 (based on the French maths community never using fractions like 1 1/3....) but it led to an impossible situation on 7 down...

Think this will allow me to solve.
