Scribe & SteveC: Either a primer here or on the wiki would be very cool in my mind. I mean, I appreciate that you guys got the work done, but even after reading over the discussion page and the results page, I still don't feel as I understand how it works. So, since I don't mind the public shame of saying this puzzle has me stumped as to how it works, I'll put in a plea for a primer.

I suppose as part of that primer, you could show why multiple configurations result in the same file.

Brian Morton: They sell PXC cards at Walmart?!? Wow, I might stop my personal boycott just for that fact alone. Wait ... are they Wave 3 cards?

C'mon, Target, pull it together.

[threadjack]What corporation is more evil, Disney or Walmart?

(yes, that tag has been left open)

Actually, I'm all for more on-line sources. You can find packs at a slightly cheaper rate ($4.82 at Walmart), you might be able to save shipping costs at others. Some of the related items and descriptions are pretty funny though. I didn't realize the target demographic were 10-15 year olds as Toys R' Us says.

Your guide to cracking the crypto dept

Ah, to be young again. I did feel a little out of place looking in the local bookshop amongst all the Magic and Yu-Gi-Fnuh? boxes though. Anyone got a pipe they don't want?

Bum-ba-baaaaa, then wishes, commands, what's the difference? Scribe presents his first draft of Crypto Backdoor GUIs for Dummies.

Hope it's not too long or complicated. I've tried to make it clear, but if there's anything that don't make sense or is missing, usual channels apply. Also, the info is as *I* see it, so others may have a different/more complete/more accurate view of how it works. I suggest the wiki's discussion page for suggested edits...

Is Disney evil? But they're so cute!

I feel better now that WalMart isn't the only option (I like Best Buy). Here's a list I quickly found after Ifurita mentioned that descriptions were humorous.

Not only does Toys 'R' Us claim that both they AND Mind Candy claim the game is targetted for 10-15 year olds, they put it in the "Board Games > Action Games" section. So, Perplex City is in the same group as (age wise) Operation, Mouse Trap, Cranium (okay, that's sort of a match), Dominoes, and the Amazing String Thing With Built-in Blacklight (in four different colors!). There are other puzzly games in this category as well, but I'm not sure this category as a whole makes sense. Still, I think they do better than some of the sites below.

Overstock.com put it in "Book, Music, Movie, & Game > PC & Video Games > General Games > New Games." Okay, I sort of understand what they were thinking of when the put it in with PC games, but it isn't that either (while you do need a PC to enter your solution, the cards themselves can be solved without it (*points back to the time before the solve page was operational*)). However, if you go up to General Games, there is not one single non-electronic game beyond Perplex City.

Also, what kind of super group is "Book, Music, Movie & Game?" Isn't that somewhat broad of a category?

Walmart went for the video game classification as well ("Video Games > Accessories > Universal Accessories"). What game or game system do we accessorize? I especially like the Similar Items of a "Game or DVD Replacement Box (3 Pack)" or "Mad Catz Component Video/Audio Cable Universal." Have you tried hooking up your PXC cards using S-Video lately?

THAT'S IT! THAT IS WHY WE HAVEN'T SOLVED SHUFFLED YET!! We didn't buy Monster Cables to help us truly see the card in the right light (hence the "seen with new eyes" comment)! Laughing

Best Buy put us in "Video Games > PlayStation 2 > Strategy and Simulation." Okay, I get the Strategy & Simulation part (the whole alternate reality idea), but PS2? Why that platform? I have nothing against Sony, but there are zero ties between the game ... wait, I take it back, there is ONE tie-in: Freudian Texts (Green, #110) was displayed on a Sony Ericksson phone. Rolling Eyes

Also amusing is if you put "perplex city" into Best Buy's search engine, it displays the Starter Pack V2, the Card Pack (a single pack), and ... Rounder Banjo, a CD of multiple banjo artists (track #19 is titled Perplexed). This could be interesting music to solve to.

Buy.com seemed to just put PXC in Games, so I can't fault them for that. But it is amusing that their "Customers who bought X bought Y" promo for a Perplex City pack ... buying a Perplex City card pack! Shocking that! I guess it sort of makes sense to buy multiple packs, especially when they charge almost 100% of the retail price as shipping costs! Shocked

I will say for all my poking fun at these retailers, I *AM* glad that they are now selling the game in retailers here in the States. I would be curious to know why Borders is not selling them here, since they sell them at Borders in the UK. It probably would be closer to the target demographic for Perplex City than a Best Buy or Toys 'R' Us.

Looks good. I'll try and play with it later tonight and give you some feedback if I come up with anything.

Dummies Inc.

Scribe thank you for not indulging in the petty bickering that has dominated the greater part of this forum! I don't know what happened to the unfiction that helped rather than hindered.
I never understood all these computer code things in the game, I can do most of the cards, or at least know how to go about doing them but the computer code stuff, no.

Anyway rambling on about nothing, just wanted a bit of basis behind my thanks!
Cheers!
